AIBU...Burford Brown Eggs...what else compares?

Please help. We get through so many eggs and the only ones we've found and loved are the Burford Browns which are £4.50 for ten. We use at least a box a day (5 of us.) We've tried all local recommendations of "oh the most wonderful eggs from the farm shop/at the side of the road" and honestly, they've all been crap in comparison.

On the basis that (unless you live next door to us and don't want to give location away in case outing) local recommendations aren't really of any help, has anyone found nationally available eggs that are as good or surpass Burfords? Must be some way to get our eggs for less than £35 a week!

@ColinKnocksTwoPence

Does nobody else microwave their eggs?
Crack large egg into a microwave poacher, prick yoke with fork, full blast for 30s and then 20s.
A cooked egg in less than a minute.
(No it doesn't have a runny yoke but it's a small price to pay for speed 😋)

I don't really see the point of an egg without a runny yolk! Apart from in an egg sandwich I suppose. Even picnic hard boiled are best with a slightly soft one. So microwave would be a no from me, sorry.

Some utter bellend tried to microwave eggs in our work microwave and it exploded. They then went off and left it all there for someone else to clean up.

When microwave ovens were young and health and safety hadn’t been invented my little brother tried to microwave a whole egg. All went well, until he took it out of the microwave and it exploded in his face. Luckily he wasn’t hurt except his dignity.

@Roselilly36

Do not microwave eggs, they have been some horrific injuries caused by this method.

I use a proper Systema Microwave dish made for the purpose.
As long as you prick the yoke and keep the vent open it has never exploded.
I eat one in a tortilla wrap nearly every day for lunch - which is why I'm not fussed about a runny yoke.

2 eggs per day.

Imagine if everyone on the planet did this? 16 billons eggs per day.

Think about 25 billions hens locked up in horrid conditions.

Then think about cutting the fuck down.

Totally agree. The yolks are more orange than yellow. Even DH who thinks I am pretentious and eggs says they taste much better. I have had rather anaemic looking eggs from a farm shop.

Oh do fuck off. For the amount of protein they produce they are better for the environment than the majority of protein sources , and the op isn't eating overproduced caged hen eggs.

I have not read the entire thread, but we have tried all kinds of eggs including farm eggs, local eggs etc and none beat Burford browns. The only ones I have ever had that beat them were from a little Italian chi chi cafe In Notting hill that used to import them directly from Italy. And I can’t imagine they would be cheaper.

We will not be changing anything. Unless you can find me some Burfords at 50p a box, preach elsewhere thank you.

If someone is worried about welfare in the egg industry worldwide I very much doubt Burford Browns are the best place for them to start.

I've put some in my Waitrose basket to try in baking. I can't eat eggs unless in cake. Anything that tastes eggy makes me feel very sick. I love omelet but can't eat it without vomiting. Sad times.

Question: do they have blood/meat spots more or less than run of the mill free range eggs? These are the most vomitous bits and have to be removed. I ha e issues with the stringy bits too 🤢

Two eggs each every day. Week after week. Blimey. Dont you get even just a teeny bit bored.
I LOVE eggs. Really love them. Totally one of my top five favourite things to eat but even I cant get through more than 3 a week.
I get mine via my milkman. £1.60 for 6. Seem perfectly fine to me.

I suspect the OP and her family eat most of their eggs for breakfast or lunch @Notebooksarefabulous.

That's when we eat ours - all manner of eggy breakfasts or omelettes, egg mayo sandwiches or quiche for lunch. That's how we eat ours, we use a similar amount per person as the OP.

In our case, it's what we're eating instead of cereal or toast for breakfast, or other types of sandwiches for lunch. It's just what we like. We buy a lot of eggs, but probably buy about two boxes of cereal a year because we almost never eat it.

I hope the people complaining about overconsumption eat a completely plant based diet themselves. Because eggs are a LOT more sustainable than meat and id say most people in this country eat meat in some form every single day. At least one chicken can produce eggs over an extended period of time unlike a cow who is reared and killed and then you’re back to square one.
So, fair enough comment if you are totally vegan. Completely hypocritical if you eat meat regularly or consume dairy products daily.
I also suspect that many of those who are incredulous at eating eggs daily have their own foods that they too eat every single day.
Finally, one of the biggest threats to the planet is overpopulation so I hope that nobody who commented has three or more children because that’s way worse for the planet than anyone eating eggs…

I sympathise OP, I love Burford Browns. Haven't found another range that have such a rich yolk and when I need to buy more and can't get to Sainsbury's or Waitrose (no one else locally sell them) I buy the Asda best range but they don't compare. So pale in comparison. Luckily I'm the only one in our house who eats eggs so I don't mind splashing out a bit as I know they'll last. I always have eggs for breakfast so try and buy the 12 pack.

Eggs are so versatile that I don’t get as bored as I would by any other food, especially bread and most people eat that every day.

One day I’ll have a cheese and tomato omelette. The next fried with leeks and mushrooms in butter. Or Baked with chorizo onion and peppers. Or Scrambled with spinach and pecorino. Or in pancakes. Or Boiled with kedgeree. Or Poached with smoked haddock. Fried with gammon steaks. In Niçoise salad...

Then there’s a couple of cakes a week etc they go into.

I can’t remember a day I didn’t eat eggs in some form or another.

Yeah, we have eggs benedict, florentine, royale, dippy eggs, egg and bacon rolls.... I'll hardboil some for the fridge. I'll make egg mayo. Hubby en route home now, and we'll have benedict for lunch.

These are all Burford jobs, where the egg is a main/sole component. I usually use them in omelettes, but can sneak a cheapy in the mix as the egg isn't a stand alone thing as such. Especially I'm putting a nice cheese in there etc.

Quiches, baking, yorkshires, flour/egg/breadcrumb jobs I'll use mainly cheapy ones.

Controversially, I use cheapys for pancakes as Burfords make them go orange and they look like tortilla wraps to me Grin

My St Ewe order has been dispatched!

I actually think it’s amazing how much the flavour of good eggs comes through in cooking. You can definitely taste them in cakes, for instance. Possibly not in meringues.

I really hope you like the St Ewe eggs TwinsandTrifle.
I only buy the original Blue box ones so I'll be interested to know what the other ones are like.
