7 year old seems to be constantly tired

7 year old DD constantly tired but refuses to sleep.

Blood tests have shown nothing unusual.

She is horrible. Refuses to go to holiday club, to the point she will sit and deliberately cough which sounds like a panic attack – I know it’s fake because as soon as we get in the car she’s fine. She goes to holiday club every school holiday so it’s not a new thing for her. I’ve already taken unpaid leave twice this week due to this, and holiday club have said if she does it again they’ll have to remove her place, she’s heard this and said she doesn’t want to go. If I take too much unpaid leave I’ll lose my job.

She won’t play with toys; she won’t go to her swimming lesson. – she did the fake cough thing again so the teacher said she couldn’t go in. We go for a day out and she just whinges she's bored and fed up and wants to go home, and then moans I don't do anything with her. Doesn't matter if she's picked the trip or not.

I am exhausted; I don’t sleep until she does. I shut her in her room but she just shouts to the point my downstairs neighbour complains – housing association who own my flat have said that they take complaints about children over 5 and noise at nighttime. She doesn’t want her tablet or the ps4 or the switch.

She doesn’t want to sleep. Even in my bed. I’ve tried everything; she has a blackout blind up. I’ve followed her natural rhythm, but she won’t sleep, she literally fights it and no matter what starts the day at 5am. GP isn’t concerned because blood tests are normal.

She is supposed to go to bed at 8pm in school times and 8.30pm in holidays. She falls asleep in class at school because she refuses to sleep but nothing I try makes her do anything but fight sleep. GP won’t consider a referral to a sleep consultant unless she’s being violent in the daytime. I can’t afford private so I’m stuck.

I am done with being a parent. All we do now is argue. I hate being a mum. I'm about to reach burnout but no-one cares.

I know I am VUR.

It sounds awful OP - especially coping on your own.
It may be worth keeping a diary to refer back to. Do she have any sensory issues? Over/under responsive?

FluffyDogMother · 31/07/2021 23:02

@7yowontsleep

I have seen several gps and they all say she’s not asd so won’t refer us, school insist she’s not either. On that list someone posted she meets 3 or 4 points though.

Everyone says it’s because we experienced DV from ExH (DDs dad) so that’s why she’s the way she is. Apparently we left at a crucial point in her development and basically because we left then she’ll never really catch up. Which I don’t understand.

This link may help show the similarities and differences between traumatic stress and ADHD: www.nctsn.org/resources/it-adhd-or-child-traumatic-stress-guide-clinicians

I would certainly in your case OP keep a diary of DD's behaviour so you can see any particular patterns. I would also look at adhdfoundation.org.uk and www.autism.org.uk as you may be able to make simple adjustments to help the anxiety she is feeling (as suggested upthread, Now & Next).

Whatever it is though, you and your DD need help, so I would ask GP what help he/she can give to support you and DD.

We never went to GP for my son’s diagnosis it was started by the school psychologist and then referred. Does she have speech therapy?

Auntycorruption · 31/07/2021 23:13

I think you need to make a list of her behaviours and present it to GP - outputs maybe anything from autism assessments to parenting classes to nutritional support etc. So far I've picked up as unusual for 7:

Unclear speech
Can't read
Can't ride a bike
Doesn't play
Doesn't enjoy usual activities
Won't sleep
Toddler style tantrums
Doesn't ask for food
History of DV

In the short term maybe have a look at the live bombing idea - a cosy weekend together might help you reconnect and build communications

I was going to say a weighted blanket too, and agree with the audiobook before bed. My daughter finds listening to an audiobook (always the same one) very helpful, as she finds the actual falling asleep bit quite scary. Also, have you tried giving her headphones when you are out and about? If it is ASD, then they can be useful to reduce the sensory input. My daughter loves music, and we carried “emergency headphones” for years, so that she could listen to music when she got stressed.

Anxiety and sleep can be a vicious cycle - too anxious to sleep, then the anxiety gets worse in the day and then sleep is even harder. My dd (5) has had much worse anxiety since the last lockdown where she wasn’t in school at all. I got a book for kids about managing worries based on cbt. It was really helpful - might this be something to try while you get asd/adhd investigated? Like pp, I think audiobooks or music at bedtime might help her by distracting from any worries/anxiety about going to sleep.

VicarofDibley · 01/08/2021 11:59

Op I would take what school say with a pinch of salt .Schools always say this .Girls with asd are extremely good at masking. I speak from experience. If your dd does have asd then the change with covid could well have triggered her anxiety to become out of hand .Cahms are notorious for refusing to diagnose, underfunded and overstretched.

No idea how but she's asleep! How long for I have no idea.

All I did differently today was let her choose where we went for a walk. She persuaded me to get a taxi home even though we were less than a mile from home but she loved it, chatted away to me telling me about the things she could see. It helped it was a company I use a lot so we do know quite a few of the drivers.

At night I stuck her in her room at 7.30 and did nothing, at all. No story, no pyjamas, no going in telling her to calm down and go to sleep, I completely ignored it. Had the monitor on so I could see her but turned the sound right down. She got into bed about 8.30 and seemed to just talk to herself, not sure when she actually went off to sleep as she sometimes will lie down but still be awake then get up again, but I didn't see her get out of bed after 8.30pm.

I might actually get a decent sleep tonight!

She is wearing pyjamas now, I put them on her once I was sure she was asleep.

Sounds like you love bombed her and she responded Flowers

TimeForTeaAndG · 02/08/2021 00:15

Hope you are also tucked up in bed OP and get a good sleep.

CheersBoris · 02/08/2021 07:43

Sounds like she may be demand avoidant and once you reduced the demands it calmed her anxiety levels. I hate throwing out diagnoses over the Internet but it’s a few things for you to read up on at least, so you can go back to the school or go with some more information.

User5827372728 · 02/08/2021 07:52

How did she sleep last night?

7yowontsleep · 02/08/2021 10:01

@User5827372728

How did she sleep last night?
Woke at 12.30am for about an hour then went back to sleep until 5am, longest sleep I've had for awhile. She usually wakes 2 or 3 times a night if she sleeps so thats a vast improvement.

She'd tucked herself in but I retucked her in and gave her a kiss after putting pyjamas on yes.

Is she hypermobile by any chance?

user1490814754 · 02/08/2021 12:33

She sounds neurodivergend/demand avoident?

7yowontsleep · 02/08/2021 15:05

@user1490814754

Is she hypermobile by any chance?
She had physio as a toddler as she was a late walker and they said she has hypermobile legs but they never officially diagnosed it I don't think.
