Following on from a thread I read earlier..

What's the most scariest life event you've been through?

Mine would be a stroke at 25 years old.

Bloody hell, these are horrendous. Amazed at the strength of each of you surviving to tell your tales.

nokidshere · 29/07/2021 01:23

When my then 4yr old fell on a pile of greenhouse glass and slashed the artery in his wrist. I've never seen so much blood and he went into shock so fast it was terrifying.

He's a strapping 6ft 4 nineteen yr old now but thinking of that moment still makes my heart race.

Hearing the A&E doctor say sepsis. DS was 4 and the panic of that night still haunts me. He doesn't remember a thing!

BillyRaywasapreachersson · 29/07/2021 01:35

Dear god, my immediate thoughts of my scary events have nothing on some of yours. I have been clearly very fortunate and you are all very brave.

IonaLeg · 29/07/2021 01:36

Gosh some of these are so awful - I’m so sorry for those who have dealt with losses Flowers

Mine was ‘swimming with dolphins’ when I was 18. We were in South Africa on a totally unlicensed boat trip, a couple of miles from shore. The owner of the boat asked us if we fancied sneakily hopping into the water to swim with a pod of dolphins.

I dived in and found myself face to face with a ten foot long Great White Shark, about 20 feet away from me. I honestly thought my heart had stopped.

Looking out into the yard where my kids were playing & seeing a cougar. It was between me & the kids. Luckily my brave little dog came out barking like crazy & scared it off.

SourAppleChew · 29/07/2021 01:38

Massively overdosing on acid when I was 18. Overwhelming sense of impending doom for eight hours and at one point didn't even know my own name.

Then had to call an ambulance for my mate who totally lost it and was literally trying to dive through the wall - ended up concussed. Ambulance wouldn't take him so then had to deal with police whilst barely able to stand up and string a sentence together. Certainly put an end to my drugs experimentation stage.

Coming round after my ex tried to drug me and kill me. Came to with him slowly inserting a knife into my side, having cut both of my wrists, telling me "nobody would believe anyone had tried to harm me, they'd think I'd done it to myself"

YouBoggleMyMind · 29/07/2021 01:43

Being told by Drs that my 24 day old baby was going to die and there was nothing they could do. Luckily my baby hung on a few more days and they decided on surgery to save his life. You'd never know looking at him now. Etched in my brain forever.

Waking up in ICU from an induced coma after having a sudden cardiac arrest a week earlier at age 58. I am very lucky to be alive, and appreciate it every day.

There’s been a few, as a child holding my breath whilst hiding in a wardrobe/cupboard/ cellar from a rapist in a children’s foster home and local church.
As an adult, reporting 3 rapists & making a documentary about my abuse.

All in a days work trying to convince a very big & angry young man to hand over the very sharp knifes without anyone getting injured,
Later talked same young man down from the roof, I was 6 months pregnant with twins and then developed the worst pain ever, my first kidney stones,
Young man years later went onto commit many crimes, he murdered a fellow inmate.
Being kicked downstairs by an upset &angry young woman, and had no feeling from my lower back, my disc almost severed sciatic nerve.
I was pensioned off at 36.
My husband got MS and a brain tumour that was the hardest thing to watch all the pain he went through until he died. Getting our 3 children through that was beyond tough.
Had kidney stones again in 2014 which led to sepsis, ICU in a coma on full life support, that really scared me and was very traumatic for my three young adults to go through, they’ve witnessed me having anaphylactic reactions dozens of times, that’s been and still is scary.

Having robbers kick my door in 2 years ago and demand money.

One started to hit me. I had all these visions of old people I had seen photos of who had been very badly beaten. Strangely I was able to remain calm and convince them I kept only small amounts of money in the house as I bought everything online. I also said to the one hitting me "Big strong man hitting a woman in her 70s". He had hit me with the flat of his hand and stopped after that. I dont think he realised how old I was and it made him think of how serious a crime he was committing or how heavy a penalty if he got caught.

My screams attracted neighbours and the two men ran off.

Ironically I had about £200 hidden but only £20 in my bag. They didnt get into the house as they broke in through the kitchen and my back was against the door.

I now had a full alarm system (which I test every few weeks) a personal alarm and cctv. The replacement door took 2 men to carry it! I also have some pretty nasty booby traps in place.

I can’t believe what some of you have gone through 💐💐💐. Mine is being told I had large mass on my left ovary, which turned out to be cancer.

AJGranny · 29/07/2021 02:13

Blimey.
My heart is racing reading these. Take care ladies 💗

When I got a call from a hospital 180 miles away telling me that my DH was in the Cardiac ICU on life support after having 'flatlined' in the ER due to takotsubo cardiomyopathy. I was told he had a 15% chance of survival and they needed my signature to implant a cardiac pump. I made the drive in 2 hours, normally it takes 3.

He survived. The doctor asked him if he'd 'seen the bright light' whilst he was unconscious and when he said no the doctor said "Well then, you must have had your eyes closed!".

memberofthewedding · 29/07/2021 02:15

@ OnlyJoking1 jeeze and I though I had it hard. My thoughts go out to you.

480Widdio · 29/07/2021 02:22

Sitting next to my husband in hospital waiting for him to die.He was 52.

Changed me,I have been numb ever since and it was years ago.

SirenSays · 29/07/2021 02:23

Some experiences I can't or won't think about, especially this late at night. But I will say I was in a hit and run as a child and it was truly terrifying. I still remember the car speeding towards me and knowing there was no way I could escape its path. Apparently my screams that day haunted my cousin for months afterwards.

TanteRose · 29/07/2021 02:36

The massive earthquake in Japan on 11 March 2011
Didn't know where the epicenter was and wondered if this was the Big One due to hit Tokyo...
When THAT hits, it will no doubt be the scariest thing I'll live through (I don't think about it very often and we are all well prepared for emergencies but still...I sometimes think "shit, wonder when it will happen" Confused)

Hairyhair123 · 29/07/2021 03:01

Getting drugged on holiday and waking up with some bloke examining my bits.
Having an abortion in China - not related thank god.
Being told I had cancer. Endless treatment.
Dh having stroke.
Hearing some of my cancer friends aren’t going to make it.
That’s making me feel very wierd at the moment. Ones died and one will die very soon. I keep thinking I should be really grateful for every moment, and I often am, but still get down at little things.
💐to us all.

My husband's Aunt said that she was going to kill herself the day that her Mum died (this was said prior to her Mum passing, while her Mum was sick).

The day her Mum died we happened to be at a function my husband and I run with my Mil twice yearly, while I was busy the Aunt showed up and my husband and Mil thought it was reasonable to allow the Aunt to take our daughter (2/3 years old at the time) around the show 'to help cheer her up'.

I have never been so panicked in my life as imagining what could happen if this Aunt, who my daughter didn't even know, were to decide to follow through on killing herself while with my daughter.

woah!

What did you do?

SummeHoliday · 29/07/2021 03:58

Earthquakes. I live near Christchurch. The shaking starts - you dive for cover - and the rumbling and shaking goes on and on, with crockery and glasses smashing as it come out of cupboards and drawers and crash onto the floor... not knowing when it will stop, and not knowing if the house will stay up. The aftershocks went in for years, and loud noises and shaking still trigger a response 10 years later.

eekbumbler · 29/07/2021 04:13

Seeing my 2 year old face down in the paddling pool. Only a foot of water - didn't even turn my back - I was sitting there watching the birds in the trees. All so quiet. We'd been swimming, I assumed he would fight if he slipped - nope, no noise, nothing. Just face down with his hair splayed out.

It was only seconds but it felt like a lifetime getting him out. He was fine, hadn't swallowed any water, was just shocked.

That image though will never leave me.

Next door neighbour took my toddler with her to the swing park. I was at home with the baby. I suddenly noticed they’d been gone a very long time. A few minutes later there was a knock at the door. There was the neighbour asking if toddler had come home. To do so he’d have had to cross a road and rail tracks.

The fear, running through streets, pushing the pram, hoping for a sight of him. I ran home, phoned my husbands work, told them what had happened and asked for him to come home. Then ran out again. They didn’t think the message was important enough to pass on.

Finally a family walked down the street with him.

The relief was indescribable.
