Been invited to a job interview....

I cannot find them online at all.

No website, no office address, (the advert says working in local office) if I type the company name or the MD’s name on search engine it’s like they don’t exist.

The email account they use is hotmail, and the phone number looks like a house number as that brings up nothing either on searches.

It’s apparently a family run business for over 10 years so not a new business.
Is it me or is this very odd?

This is very odd!
I once answered an advert for indeed and ended up going on the most random interview of my life where i had to go round knocking on doors to try and sell loft insulation with these two random 20-something lads. There was me and about 5 other young people with them and it literally lasted all day, I was just too polite to leave, one by one people dropped out and went home… me and another girl stayed there for the whole day trooping round houses knocking on doors in the rain and then when I got back to the office they offered me the job which I politely declined 🤣 this was when I was about 22, let’s just say since then I’ve become a lot more assertive!!!

Susannahmoody · 28/07/2021 19:05

I had something similar, crystal girl. Selling mortgages door to door in Liverpool, talk about grim

@HarebrightCedarmoon

Why are there two posts that just say "F"?
Because those posters haven't realised there's a button called Watch this thread at the top of the screen that they can click instead.

The F stands for following.

Bringbackbertha · 28/07/2021 19:08

Would you be willing to share the company name.

As someone said above care agencies have to be registered with cqc. Authorities wont touch them otherwise. Not sure if that stops them trading privately.

However I know someone who went for a carers role but after travelling and the jobs they were given the take home would have been below the minimum wage so was best dodgy.

Crystalgirl90 · 28/07/2021 19:18

So odd! I had actually forgotten about this experience until I read this thread 🤣🙈

Brentfordadvice · 28/07/2021 19:32

All care companies need to be registered
All care companies Have to be registered with quality care commision.
All employees must be checked through CRB DBS which checks immigration status including checks on where living over 3-5 years, checks on child protection registers etc.
All employees sponsored will be checked.
Al companies sponsoring will be checked if genuine. And visited officially unofficially by government agencies.
All uk or Irish nationals will also be checked even though they have right to employment in UK.
After Brexit transition all EU nationals now have to apply to work in UK permanently as well have Criminal records checked abroad. Not done before Brexit.
All companies that sponsor who break rules especially immigration rules get a fine of £20,000 per person and pleas for discount.
Those brekaing rules are likely to lose facility to sponsor and also be removed from are commision as well as banned from holding future roles.

So if this company doesn’t appear to have an email apart from hotmail, not registered anywhere or you can’t find them.
THERES SOMETHING VERY WRONG

Not really strange i am a sole trader and dont have to go on companies House until I am a limited company I do however have a website but depending on the area the business is they may not need one also not all business have social media its a pain in the arse to manage on top of everything else

Vixyboo · 28/07/2021 20:04

6 years ago I saw a job on Indeed. It was local, really good pay per hour and perfect hours to suit me. I could not find anything online related to the job or the employer. It was so bizarre. I applied anyway. So, turns out the client group is very vulnerable and the whole thing was totally legit. I've been there 6 years now and I love it!

Brentfordadvice · 28/07/2021 20:06

Any who have any questions about these companies and want government tracking teams to investigate something dodgy send the emails you have to
[email protected]
They investigate all these type of scams, schemes and also look at trends of these types of scam bypassing checks and anything that can hurt our communities. Even modern day slavery.

Always click or touch an email address of sender and see what it says. Company like indeed would have something like @indeed.com/uk
Anything else or country code is dodgy.
Also if you use a pc laptop, hover the mouse pointer over the email, if they are using an email but have a hidden email address it may appear behind it, or if linked to something else . May say indeed when looking direct but may bring up another strange one hovering over. Just be aware.
You can always copy and paste into google search and if a real email especially .com will tell
You who pays for that .com as there is a register of com emails being used in this country which is checked by government.

justlliloleme · 28/07/2021 20:33

I work in business support & not all companies will be registered on companies house, they don’t need to be.

A small family business can easily be run from home. However the lack of internet presence is odd, not concerning, just odd. Who doesn’t have any internet presence at all these days?

If you’re nervous about going to a family home ten request the meeting in a public space, cafe, pub etc. But to be honest I’ve dealt with a large variety of companies so this wouldn’t concern me.

Bebethany · 28/07/2021 20:45

It could have internet presence? Deep or dark web?

No Twitter, no Insta, what audience are some of these weirdos trying to reach?

MakeMathsFun · 28/07/2021 22:27

Take a friend with you to the interview, then say that you used your initiative to bring a friend for your own safety as there did not appear to be any bonified information online about the company. They should understand.

Bangolads · 29/07/2021 05:26

Ask them why you can’t find them 🤷🏼‍♀️

Applesarenice · 29/07/2021 07:34

Ask them to send you a link to their website etc so you can read up before interview

WoolieLiberal · 29/07/2021 08:36

Hmm… another vote for Companies House check here.

Do they have a premises so you can “case the joint” before going?

They might just be old fashioned or have recently changed their name.

I’d go and have a sneaky look before deciding whether it’s legit or not.

Have you tried putting the company name OR the name of the person who invited you for interview/director if it's a business, into Companies House website. If not they are breaking the law if they under the radar.

Bebethany · 30/07/2021 06:24

Not necessarily, sole traders don’t have to?

Why are posters still bringing up Companies House? Read all pps telling you that this only applies to limited companies, anyone can be a sole trader with no need for any public information.

I can assure you that I am perfectly legal despite not being registered with Companies House. And am on no register of directors etc.

Sole Traders exist AND can employ others!

Had you read even the first quarter of the thread you'd have seen your assertion refuted a couple of times. You are wrong!

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 30/07/2021 08:17

Had to keep checking this wasnt an old thread with all the 'emplyer market' type cooments. Not where i live. Too many jobs and not enough people. A care agency needs to have social media presence for recruiting staff. Think you've dodged a bullet OP ( think 7 day a week 'admin' support ) for those types of companies

sailmeaway · 30/07/2021 08:18

Ring them and ask for more details? Be upfront and have them explain why you can't find any details for them.

me109f · 30/07/2021 16:04

I spent a few years of unemployment some years ago. I chased jobs in the local newspaper and a great many via the 'Employment Office'.
A few advertised in the newspaper were totally phoney, with comedy job details (high salaries for attractive work) and I could not understand the motivation behind those that paid to have them advertised.
However, the worst were those listed by the Employment Office, the great majority (it was a depressed area) were totally bogus. I eventually twigged that the Employment Office clerks were clearly making them up to try and make out there were hundreds of unfilled jobs in the area. They were probably tasked by their bosses to 'find' advertised positions to stick in the Job Search websites and local papers, and so they just cynically made loads of them up. I was really pissed at sending out my cv to empty boarded-up addresses and even turning up to arranged appointments for interview when the actual address was inappropriate or did not even exist.

The other scam was to insist you rang before applying and then someone insisting that you are not suitable because you do not have a range of highly specialised formal degree or experience qualifications that were never even aluded to in the original advert. Sick bastards.
A long time ago I used to look for jobs in the papers and goverment Unemployment Offices and this sort of thing never happened.

CrankyFrankie · 30/07/2021 20:53

I heard something like this a while back on the local fb group. The girl was scammed out of all her personal details and ghosted after she’d signed the contract.
