Been invited to a job interview....

I cannot find them online at all.

No website, no office address, (the advert says working in local office) if I type the company name or the MD’s name on search engine it’s like they don’t exist.

The email account they use is hotmail, and the phone number looks like a house number as that brings up nothing either on searches.

It’s apparently a family run business for over 10 years so not a new business.
Is it me or is this very odd?

It does sound very bizarre, maybe a few candidates have turned down the interview because they are coming across dodgy and they are getting desperate hence their eagerness to get you in.

I would get the interview address for pure curiosity if nothing else.

I wouldn’t go.

And i would report to indeed so they can investigate further.

@redheadwitch

If its a registered company it should exist on Companies House. If it doesn't, I would be concerned about it.

Only Limited companies have to register on Companies House.

Not all businesses are Limited Companies and are still perfectly legitimate. It would not be unusual for something "family run"

I do admin, ad hoc and paid for an old school friend. He's a property landlord and also has people who work for him renovating properties, building work, ground work, has apprentices etc. Unless you knew him you wouldn't find any info on social media, his personal FB page is his name with no mention of his business names. You couldn't google him and his business(es) would come up. He's really a closed book as far as the internet goes and he's internet savvy.

Could this job be some sort of set up like this?

Small businesses can be run this way, to some extent. A sole trader business is not registered at Companies House, but can still employee people. DPs employer doesn't have website.
. Hotmail and the phone number ring alarm bells.

@Maggiesfarm

Go but take someone with you, even if they only wait outside in the car.

Hopefully it will be a small, family run business and all very good.

We wait your news!

This seems an excellent idea. It's probably ky something simple like they've given the OP the wrong info.

He didn't advertise for the admin job, he just sent me a PM on Facebook asking if I was interested.

Forgot the office is a building in his garden and I don't answer the phone because it doesn't ring. He has a mobile number and people who work for him or know him have that number.

I'd go for the interview.

Wonder if it's an MLM or something where you don't actually get a wage but some pittance of 'commission'.

Where was the potential interview?

Was there any suggestion that they would be supplying you with computer equipment to do the job from your own home? That's a well-known scam that comes up on online job sites all the time.

They must have at least an address for the interview!

I would be curious and try to know more, if only to find them on google street.

What business are they actually in?

i'd be wary, but would ask for more information. would ask to meet in a public place and would take someone with you - so coffee shop or similar.

i'd also message indeed and ask them for more info. agreed that some places won't be listed on co house. have ou done a co house search for the MD? it could be that the business name isn't the company name if that makes sense? so maybe if you search just the md on companies house they will pop up and you can see what's going on.

Ok, so very likely a scam. Here's some ways in which it may play out:

  1. Interview or chat will be offered - you'll be asked to call a number. It's probably a premium rate number - gonna cost you $$$ for your hour interview

    or

  2. Quick interview, "you've got the job - please send us a copy of your passport, NI number, DoB, etc" - possible identity fraud.

    or

  3. Quick interview, "you've got the job - we need you to pay a fee for security checks and initial WFH set up costs - please transfer £200 to account x,t,x" -

    or

  4. There are ways they can use you to launder money. Bit more complicated, but it does happen.

I'm sure you'll get a better feel for the situation if you get to talk to them on the phone. I second the suggestion of meeting in a public place. If you have doubts once you've scheduled the meeting, could say you've been pinged and could you do it virtually?

SqueakyPeaks · 27/07/2021 15:26

I agree that it sounds dodgy, but being generous it is possible that they're self-employed and don't have a web presence.

I'm an online tutor and am so busy I'm thinking of employing some admin support. I wouldn't have an office address etc (I do have a website) but I would either interview people virtually, or meet at a coffee shop or hired meeting room.

I think you'll know more when you speak to them and can ask proper questions.

Call them from a different phone so they don’t know it’s you. See how they answer the phone.

I like the idea of going but having a friend waiting outside, and drop it into the conversation.

Sounds like a dodgy commissions job where the company keeps changing its name.
