Been invited to a job interview....

I cannot find them online at all.

No website, no office address, (the advert says working in local office) if I type the company name or the MD’s name on search engine it’s like they don’t exist.

The email account they use is hotmail, and the phone number looks like a house number as that brings up nothing either on searches.

It’s apparently a family run business for over 10 years so not a new business.
Is it me or is this very odd?

Something is very very dodgy here. No search result for the MD? At all?

Thays very unusual.

Companies House is for companies. Plenty of entirely reputable businesses are not companies and therefore not on there.

Micemakingclothes · 27/07/2021 13:14

I once had an absolutely fantastic and flexible admin job that at a very small business that operated out of someone’s house. I got that job from personal contacts. It’s really not the kind of thing people want to bring in someone random.

This is pinging my “sales scam” radar. I’d still at least get the location info for the interview since it might give you more information. You can always cancel.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 27/07/2021 13:16

Where are you going for the interview? Can you find it on Streetview?

Orf1abc · 27/07/2021 13:17

The red flag to me is their desperation to meet you. Unless you have niche skills in high demand, it's very much an employer's market. This doesn't sit right for an admin role.

I'd offer to meet them and see where they suggest. Say you'd like to meet in person. If it's anything like one of those short term office spaces, I'd run a mile. Pretty sure I'd be running a mile irrespective (I'm definitely not suggesting you go!), but it might help someone else if you can get more information.

girlmom21 · 27/07/2021 13:17

I wouldn't waste your time. There'll be something dodgy about them.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 27/07/2021 13:18

Contact Indeed about them, saying you cannot find any details for the company and you find it odd.

plodalong12 · 27/07/2021 13:19

Post the advert here

MintLeaves12 · 27/07/2021 13:20

Wow odd. I'd search the person requesting on LinkedIn or maybe even Facebook to see if they are real?

No website or trace is odd

bruffin · 27/07/2021 13:26

Theycare either after your bank details, or money

notthemum · 27/07/2021 13:31

You must have at least a company name.
Contact indeed ? ? And ask them. They should be able to sort something out for you.

OhNoNoNoNoNo · 27/07/2021 13:32

What type of business?

SwanShaped · 27/07/2021 13:32

Can you phone them? See what they sound like?

girlmom21 · 27/07/2021 13:32

@bruffin

Theycare either after your bank details, or money
They might just be a bit dodgy with a job completely different to the advert when she gets there
LadyPoison · 27/07/2021 13:34

Yes - it's their desperation to have you unless your skills are very niche which raises a few red flags.

Plenty of small businesses are home based so that wouldn't necessarily be an issue (I've worked in one myself) but the lack of an internet "footprint" nowadays would worry me. I'd ask them for their website address on the pretext you want to prepare for the interview.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/07/2021 13:37

Contact Indeed and ask them. They might choose to pull the advert if they can't verify the business. But they aren't all that hot on verification, they are 'just a host'!

Smackthepony · 27/07/2021 13:43

Contact Indeed and say as a diligent interviewee, you wanted to do some research on this company in prep for the interview but that you can find nothing at all anywhere. Ask them what they know about the company. I would be concerned too.

Imicola · 27/07/2021 13:50

Perhaps the job is for the MNer who recently posted that they were upset a candidate for a job had looked up their company on companies house in advance of the interview...
It sounds a bit odd to me, id definitely be asking more questions before committing to an interview.

Thisyearisshit · 27/07/2021 13:52

It was like two above posters said, it was the desperation to meet me that rang alarm bells with me. I ended my last message wishing them luck in finding their candidate, and did not expect a response.
I definitely don’t have niche skills, just a history of admin experience!! I said to my partner last night that in this current climate for an employer to be willing to accommodate hours for me is very odd, they must have quite a few applicants!!

I will try the message with Indeed, and think of a way I could message them and ask for their website, without looking like I am wary of them. After all, they have my details now from my CV.

TheRebelle · 27/07/2021 13:53

Sounds a bit odd to me, how do their customers find them if they’re not online, are they even in the Yellow Pages?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/07/2021 13:54

This reminds me I had a job interview in a pub once. Too young to know any different. The business owners had gone out for supper and I was invited to interview after they’d had their meal. It felt really weird.

SwanShaped · 27/07/2021 13:55

You could say that you’d like to prepare for interview by looking at their website or fb page. And see what they say.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 27/07/2021 14:00

It's not construction is it? I used to have job that involved having to call consturction companies and sometimes it was impossible to find anything online, not even a phone number. I can only assume they got work by word of mouth as they definitely did exist and did do work

It surprised me that they had no online presence but it happened quite otfen

They were mostly sole traders or partnerships so nothing illegal about not being registered anywhere

Mintjulia · 27/07/2021 14:05

Is your picture on your indeed account? Or on social media?

Do they have your address? Are they making sure you aren't home?

It sounds very dodgy to me.

Maggiesfarm · 27/07/2021 14:11

Go but take someone with you, even if they only wait outside in the car.

Hopefully it will be a small, family run business and all very good.

We wait your news!
