AIBU to go to a&e?

I’ve had bad dizziness, nausea and indigestion type symptoms and cold sweats (not prone to any of this) for an hour, I just really don’t feel right at all.

I googled the symptoms and am now worried it’s heart issues. I took an aspirin and called nhs24 in Scotland. They asked if my neck was hot cold wet or dry and I said normal
And they asked if my lips were blue and I said I wasn’t sure I didn’t think so.

They’ve said they will refer me to out of hours doctor and someone will call me back later today.

As I was googling all I kept reading was how womens heart attacks are missed because their symptoms are different.

I’m not a malingerer or dramatic, I tend to just get in with stuff, but something really doesn’t feel right, maybe it’s just vertigo or something but I’m considering just going to a&e, can’t decide if that’s over the top!

I took an aspirin before I called nhs 24 and am sitting on my floor knees bent just now (if I move I’m too dizzy)

@Bettyboopawoop

It could be anything but yes if you want covid go to a&e,. It doesn't sound like a heart attack.

Do you know a single thing about heart attacks in women?

They manifest completely differently and are often mistaken for indigestion and the symptoms include a cold sweat and nausea.

And what makes you qualified?
You should NEVER tell someone not to go to hospital, as ‘its not a heart attack’
How the hell do you????

I missed the part where she said she had an indigestion pain so excuse me for that, and yes I know you can have many different symptoms, as in teeth, jaw, arm ect ect it does not nesscarily mean she's having a heart attack and yes she probably should get checked out to rule it out, she could even have covid. Googling symptoms is not always wise as you Google a headache and end up with a brain tumour.

It is SO dangerous to give out medical advice without ever even seeing the person. You risk people’s actual lives.

So shut up now.

Anything like that straight to A&E, at worst they can help if things take a turn, at best you’ve wasted a journey, I hope it’s nothing serious xx

I had a feeling like a big heavy weight on my chest. Couldn't sleep, I can't say it was pain. I phoned GP who asked if anyone could drive me to A&E and when I said yes she said go now.

I got there and they did an ECG very quickly and then I was taken into cubicles where a cardiac nurse came and introduced herself and said doctor would be coming to see me but I would probably be on the cardiac ward later. I laughed and said no I was fine. Doctor came and said they were admitting me to cardiac ward. They fittied me up to a defibrilator in case anything happened on the way to the ward. I had a angiogram and blood thinners and was out in 4 days, it might have been 5.

The NHS can be really impressive. Good luck.

Just a heads up. You cannot just go to A&E anymore unless it’s a real emergency. They will turn you away at the door and tell you to call nhs24.

It’s been widely publicised so not sure why people don’t know this.

Potential heart attack is a real emergency. You can just turn up at A&E to be seen for one.

'Hi I think I am having a heart attack'
No sorry, you can't come in, go home and call this number.

What is a suspected heart attack if not an emergency?

God this thread is a calamity. A&Es are not closed- this only happens in seriously extenuating circumstances like they’ve run out of oxygen or are completely overwhelmed and then patients are diverted to another service.

It is entirely acceptable to go to A&E in these circumstances. A woman in her 50s who is 5 stone overweight with the symptoms described needs to be assessed ASAP.

I have said before. I think Mumsnet should police this kind of thread more actively. People blithely dismiss potentially deadly medical emergencies on the basis of a few lines of description - the idiocy is truly shocking.

I really hope you are at a&e now OP.

This just beggars belief. You are talking dangerous, dangerous nonsense.

A&Es are not closed and never have been. During the strict lockdown experienced practitioners at the a&e door were making judgement calls as to what really was an emergency that needed to come in and signposting others elsewhere (111/minor injuries clinics/GPs for example). The requirement to do this is much less now so isn't really happening as much.

But please don't spread misinformation about a&e departments being closed, it causes unnecessary stress and worry.

AFAIK that applies to situations that aren’t immediately life threatening .

So fractures, burns, bumped head, sprains, walking wounded, anything that’s probably ?minor injuries etc . NHS24 can sign post for those things eg send to MI units/pharmacy etc or give an arrival time (I think) to prevent crowded waiting rooms and long waits and inappropriate A&E attendance .

Suspected heart attack, stroke, immediately serious injury, severe pain, loss of consciousness etc - I’m 99% sure you can still present at A&E for assessment/treatment .

It isn’t the case that anyone would turn someone away who was genuinely experiencing a medical emergency .

See from NHS24 - they still recommend direct attendance in an emergency !

It’s dangerous because the regulatory bodies of healthcare professionals such as the GMC and NMC, plus employers and education institutes (rightly) caution health care professionals against giving advice on social media- as it’s a huge risk.

So those people who do give advice are generally unqualified and sometimes really daft- hence someone telling someone who is perhaps experiencing heart issues to stay at home and have a Rennie.

I’m an ex healthcare professional. No longer registered but probably have more skills/expertise/knowledge than the average person so don’t mind piping up now and then.

I totally agree with you. It’s awful.

Hope the poster has gone to hospital.

As an aside, and to all saying you can’t go to A&E these days, I broke my arm during the last lockdown and I had to go to A&E. They were fantastic as always.
