More on Bannon - no Presidential pardon available this time...

Bannon and other top Trump officials face legal peril for defying subpoenas.
Developments in select committee’s move to secure Bannon’s conviction come as Trump files lawsuit blocking the release of his White House records.
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/oct/19/steve-bannon-subpoena-trump-officials-legal-peril?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

...The legal jeopardy for Bannon – who is expected to be held in contempt by the committee on Tuesday – is anticipated after it emerged in a letter to his attorney, obtained by the Guardian on Monday, that he had claimed executive privilege protections on materials unrelated to the executive branch.

The House select committee chairman, Bennie Thompson, also said in the letter that even if the panel entertained the claims of executive privilege, Bannon had no basis to ignore the order since not even a president could grant him immunity from a House subpoena.

The dual legal arguments in the letter, which served as Bannon’s final warning to cooperate a day before the select committee is expected to hold him in contempt of Congress, underscores the weakness of the executive privilege claim advanced by Donald Trump...

Dofus statement on Colin Powell

Given the chance to be gracious about someone’s death, or say nothing at all, Trump takes a decidedly different route

Roussette · 19/10/2021 15:34

My disgust for Trump knows no bounds reading that statement.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/10/2021 16:19

It doesn't surprise me even slightly, but yes, it does disgust me.

(And I may be the opposite of a Colin Powell fan, but it is still disgusting.)

prettybird · 19/10/2021 17:33

At least Colin Powell had the strength of character to apologise for his mistake, following his badly researched speech to the UN about Iraq's supposed WMD.

A self-awareness and humility that Doofus could t even begin to comprehend, let alone emulate.

AcrossthePond55 · 19/10/2021 18:17

After my initial gut feeling of disgust my head went to the usual "WTF else could we expect from a piece of shit like Doofus?".

As far as him hoping the 'fake' media treats him as 'beautifully' in death, well, I'm sure he'll exactly get the 'treatment' he deserves.

He's going to go down as the worst POTUS in US history and the one who tried and failed to destroy the Constitution and with it our democracy. Too bad he won't be around to see/read it.

lionheart · 19/10/2021 19:31

Good Lord, he is incapable of showing any dignity or compassion.

DuncinToffee · 20/10/2021 09:56

The Jan. 6 select committee has just voted unanimously — 9 to 0 — to recommend holding Steve Bannon be held in contempt for refusing to comply with a subpoena for their investigation.

lionheart · 20/10/2021 10:05

Long overdue. Let's hope it's just the start.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2021 12:30

I don't really understand why they can only recommend instead of simply doing it. If someone is in contempt of court here, they can be sent directly to jail, straight from the court.

Contempt of Congress procedures aren't as straightforward as judicial contempt procedures.

If an individual refuses to answer a subpoena, the committee (in this case the 6 Jan Cmte) issuing the subpoena passes a 'resolution of contempt' and reports it to their parent chamber (in this case the House). The House then votes to issue a 'citation of contempt'. This results in 'Inherent Contempt' with the person being called before the House to answer charges and receive a sentence of imprisonment. There is also a referral to the DC US Attorney's office for possible civil proceedings resulting in conviction for contempt of Congress and further (small) penalties. After all that, the Senate has the ability to institute its own proceedings to file a civil suit against anyone convicted of contempt resulting in referral to the federal district courts.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2021 16:45

I swear I replied to this thanking you for explaining, and commenting that if the law grinds as slowly as the Mills of God on this occasion, I hope it also grinds exceeding fine, but my post seems to have vanished.

www.nytimes.com/2021/10/20/nyregion/trump-westchester-golf-club-investigation.html

Former President Donald J. Trump’s family business, which is already under indictment in Manhattan, is facing a criminal investigation by another prosecutor’s office that has begun to examine financial dealings at a golf course the company owns, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

You know, that's an interesting thought.

There must be 100s of 'big name' businesspeople he's done major shit to who have been waiting and praying that 'their day will come'. Could be they're seeing these mounting court cases as their chance for a little justice/revenge. I know I would be.

And that's not counting the people who know they're going to be in deep doo-doo if they continue to keep his secrets and lie for him. I'm sure there are any number of people who are contemplating the decision of which will be worse; 'betrayal' of Doofus or the possible legal consequences of continuing to lie for him. He's not POTUS anymore, his 'pardon power' is gone, so he's powerless to 'save' them.

Reminds me of that old saying "Be nice to the people you meet on your way up, because you'll surely meet them on your way back down".

I'm just watching "Four hours at the Capitol" on BBC2,
I watched the horrendous events unfold as they happened on 6th Jan, but seeing it like this with commentary from Capitol Police, Senators, Reps and others is truly moving and frightening and so much worse than I remembered.

It was horrendous. The people concerned are utterly deluded. The one who handed out joints under the cupola was clearly weed-addled. It was jawdropping to hear someone actually say, straightfaced and sincerely, that 800000 children in the US go missing every year and they are being tortured and killed by liberals and he and his gang of misfits are going to rescue them. I wouldn't trust him to rescue a fly drowning in a bowl of soup.
