[quote DuncinToffee]The most dystopian part of the Texas abortion ban is it is specifically designed to evade court challenges. The law’s defenders say that, given the way the law is structured, only Texas courts can rule on the matter — not federal courts.

A chilling precedent.

Now, I'm not a Constitutional scholar, but I remember in my Civics class that the Constitution and Federal law override state laws. So they may say that, but Civil Rights and Constitutional law will disagree. I'm sure it'll be tested, and soon.

I told DH that in our RV rambles we are NOT spending one red cent in Texas. Not even for a stick of gum. It may take us 300+ miles out of our way through Oklahoma and Arkansas, but I'm good with that!

The (faint) writing on the wall seems to be saying Trump 2024 is a not a just a moneymaking scam.

As Biden falters, a two-man race for the 2024 GOP nomination begins to take shape.

Well this BIden loving thread is still going....how do you feel after he now has American blood on his hands after his atrocious handling of Afghanistan, not to mention all the innocent Afghans killed all because of his poor handling of the situation.

Stil happy to support him? Wasn't long ago there was ferorious conversation from some about how Trump had killed more Americans than any other President....well look how the tables have turned.

SIckening you can even support the man

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/09/2021 11:19

Yes, I am happy to support Biden, who is incomparably less godawful than Trump was.

Funny how Biden has American blood on his hands but Trump (architect of the worst SarsCOV2 response in the world) doesn't. How many dead this month in Afghanistan? And how many dead of Covid last year? No comparison, dude.

I think the Afghanistan evacuation American deaths figure is sixteen, isn't it? Hell, that's fewer than die on the roads every weekend in the USA; 36,120 people in the USA were killed by cars in 2019. In May this year 1,636 died on the roads in Texas alone. I find this "he has AMERICAN BLOOD ON HIS HANDS" guff risible.

I think this is a link to Dan Rather's perspective on Texas, his home state.

Oh, sorry, I forgot I'd changed my name recently, I used to be a Leonard Cohen song.
@AcrossthePond55 - I do hope your DH is doing OK at the moment and that the treatment has not been too taxing.
I wrote a post about Texas/politics today earlier in the day but it got lost. Obviously it was brilliantly observed, pithy and to the point, but unfortunately I can't remember a word of it. The gist was that as a child of the Sixties, I am terribly disappointed with the regression that has been happening and continues to happen in C21st, with regard to racism, sexism and workers' rights, amongst other things, and I want President Obama back.[wails]

Justice Sotomayor: 'The Court’s order is stunning. Presented with an application to enjoin a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights ... a majority of Justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand.'

www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/unconstitutional-chaos-biden-vows-whole-government-response-after-texas-abortion-n1278380

"Biden said he was directing the Office of the White House Counsel and his Gender Policy Council to involve the Health and Human Services Department and the Justice Department to evaluate what “legal tools we have to insulate women and providers from the impact of Texas' bizarre scheme of outsourced enforcement to private parties.”"

"The president called the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling overnight “an unprecedented assault on a woman’s constitutional rights under Roe v. Wade” since the decision nearly 50 years ago."

I really hope that's right about Texas--I think marches are planned in all States.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/09/2021 15:44

You know, I was thinking about not only how restrictive this law is, but how isolating.

A woman faced with an unwanted pregnancy, or worse still her daughter's, will not be able to confide in one single solitary soul, possibly not even her partner or the baby's father if they aren't 'together', for fear somehow the information will get in the 'wrong hands' and she finds herself at the receiving end of a lawsuit. Or worse yet, threatened into continuing the pregnancy by an abusive partner or one who is determined to 'hang on to her'. Or just money grubbing fucking assholes that see a way to make a quick buck. $10,000 for being a snitch. It should be 30 pieces of silver.

For some of those with 'resources' there will be a solitary, isolating trip across state lines with no one there to hold a hand or watch over you. No 'aftercare' or counseling. Women who get home and perhaps later develop complications (pretty rare in legal terminations, but it does happen) will be afraid to go to the ER or seek help from their own doctors.

The more I think about this, the more sickened I am. Fuck Texas.

lion this is truly heartbreaking. I cannot fathom doctors standing by and doing nothing. These laws are an abomination. I want every single one of the politicians who vote for these laws to suffer (and continue to suffer) in the way that the mother in the article did.

I am in absolute tears. What that poor woman had to endure was beyond criminal. If she had been in a POW camp and treated this way, her captors would have been tried for war crimes.

May the people who voted for that law burn in hell.

From a few months back.

www.reuters.com/world/us/former-georgia-district-attorney-indicted-obstruction-arbery-case-2021-09-02/

'ATLANTA, Sept 2 (Reuters) - A Georgia grand jury indicted a former district attorney on Thursday on two charges stemming from her delay in charging suspects captured on video fatally shooting a Black man as he was out jogging in the coastal city of Brunswick.

The men accused of the Feb. 23, 2020, killing of Ahmaud Arbery were not arrested until weeks after the release of the video, which sparked outrage across the country. Civil rights activists said it marked another example of a targeted attack on a Black man.

The video showed Arbery, 25, jogging down a two-lane street, then being shot with a rifle as he was confronted by two men who had stopped their pickup in his path. A third man in another truck shot phone video of the incident.'

'A Texas state judge on Friday temporarily blocked an anti-abortion group from enforcing Texas's new 6-week abortion ban against Planned Parenthood, handing a narrow legal victory to abortion rights advocates.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble's (D) ruling does not invalidate the new law but rather halts Texas Right to Life and its associates from suing abortion providers and workers at Planned Parenthood clinics under the statute, S.B. 8, that took effect Wednesday.'

Worse than that, IMO, is the possibility that women who miscarry having to appear in court to prove they miscarried and not had an abortion. Sad
