DH says I’m ridiculous for wanting to spend this amount of money on a watch, who is BU?

I’ve been lusting after a Rolex datejust for as long as I can remember, but have always stopped myself from buying because there has always been something more ‘sensible’ to do with the money, like keeping it in savings or spending money on an experience like a holiday. This year I’ve been feeling pretty low what with the current situation and there’s no way I’ll be able to go on holiday this year as I’m vulnerable health wise.

Announced to DH this morning that I’m thinking about treating myself to a nice pre owned Rolex (£6k) on the basis that it’s what I’d usually spend on holidays in a year anyway and they hold their value pretty well, in the event that I ever wanted/needed to sell.

DH thinks I’m being absolutely ridiculous spending such a large amount of money on a watch and now I’m wondering whether I’m having a moment of madness. I should point out that the funds would be coming from my own pot of money, rather than joint.

Do they all really hold their value? surely it depends on the actual model eg a very expensive special edition surely holds its value more than the entry price point ones?

Stompythedinosaur · 23/07/2021 12:01

It is an insane amount of money to spend, but if it is your money you can do what you want.

Nengineer · 23/07/2021 12:02

Rolex shops are a bit hit and miss. The woman in the one in Bourne mouth is one of the most unpleasant people I have ever encountered. In better places like London they are much nicer. I love mine, I was given it by a relative as a child. People are very judgemental on here today.

KingdomScrolls · 23/07/2021 12:04

I would definitely scratch/damage it, I have a couple of beautiful watches (nowhere near that price) but honestly I don't wear them anymore, there's never a time when I need the time and I'm not close to my phone/laptop/clocks

ZaraW · 23/07/2021 12:04

Rolex watches are automatic so she wouldn’t need a new battery as they don’t have batteries

Fair enough though servicing is expensive

HaroldTheHare · 23/07/2021 12:06

OP I totally understand.
I don't have a Rolex, or indeed any watch, though I do admire some and may indulge at some point.
However I absolutely adore jewellery - nice jewellery & most days I wear my engagement & wedding rings on my left hand (£5k) & I wear a precious stone & diamond ring on ring finger of right hand (£2k) & a 18ct gold necklace with diamond (£2k) so I am generally wearing nearly 10k of jewellery & I wear it with jeans / t-shirts etc.
I have more than 1 necklace / right hand rings & i alternate them depending on mood/ outfit but they're all in that price bracket
My jewllery gives me immense pleasure Every time I wear it & I wear it a lot

I also love travel & experiences but couldn't care less about expensive cars or designer bags...

If you love the watch buy it & wear it & enjoy it as much as you can

IntermittentParps · 23/07/2021 12:07

Your money, your business. I couldn't give a fig about watches but it's not my issue. And it's not your DH's.
My DP spends on things I never would (gaming consoles, an Apple watch etc) but it's his money; it's not like it's either that or the food bill. And I spend way more than he does or would on clothes and hair.

ivfgottwins · 23/07/2021 12:07

costs far less than most MNers would spend on a car or family holiday, hardly a stealth boast 🙄

Err I don't know anyone in here who spends £6k minimum on a holiday? 🤔

TheDogsMother · 23/07/2021 12:08

I bought myself a Cartier about 20 years and love it much now as I did then. I wear very little other jewellery and the watch now retailing for twice what I paid for it.

Dutchesss · 23/07/2021 12:09

I don't understand why so many people like rolex watches, it's because they're expensive right? I just think there are so many lovely watches out there at less than £100, it always surprises me that loads of people want a rolex one.
Buy one if you want but it is a huge chunk of money to wear on your wrist and you also open yourself up to being vulnerable to muggings if you wear it out and about.

hulahooper2 · 23/07/2021 12:09

Your money , your choice but I would think you were wearing a fake

I thought that the MN mantra was that all money within a marriage is 'family money', or is that just when the man has his own 'pot'?
Wegobshite · 23/07/2021 12:10

Go for it OP
I bought my DH a breitling watch for his 50th it cost £5500 and he wears it every day and loves it .
I have a Tag that I’ve had about 10 years and It cost me 3k 12 years ago and I wear it most days

CounsellorTroi · 23/07/2021 12:10

I like watches but I wouldn't spend that much. My "best" watch is an £800 Longines that my DH gave me for my 50th. It gets a few compliments. I think it is stylish without being ostentatious.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 23/07/2021 12:11

As long as you. Know what you are doing then go ahead, many people buy a Rolex and automatically assume it will make money or not devalue. There are only a few specific models you will make money on and you would have to fork out a great deal more than 6k for them atm. Most models you will be very lucky to get back what you paid for. Choose very carefully.

XingMing · 23/07/2021 12:12

It's your money OP; you have no children to save for, and you can make the choice, but you are not being unreasonable.

Soberanne · 23/07/2021 12:13

@JudgeJ i agree with that. When its a man wanting to spend money against his female partners wishes its family money but woman can buy what they choose and the man should have no say. Mumsnetwats at their best.

But @Halowinslet if you can afford and your husbands only concern is that its a waste of money rather than you cant afford it, then i say go for it. Who knows whats round the corner and you maynever have the opportunity to again.

This. Saw a Rolex turn up on Bargain Hunt once, didn't make that much.
Googlewasmyidea1 · 23/07/2021 12:16

@lazylinguist

Wow I googled Rolex Datejust. It just looks like... a watch. I honestly don't get it!
good job it's not you thinking of buying one then
MiddleParking · 23/07/2021 12:17

My husband bought me a Rolex OP for around that. It is absolutely beautiful and doesn’t look ostentatious at all, I wear it every day and adore it (and it will hold/increase its value, unlike any other jewellery I’ll ever wear). Given that you’re child-free and can afford it from your own money I wouldn’t think twice.

newnortherner111 · 23/07/2021 12:17

I would never buy one. Consider yourself fortunate to have the money for it to be an option.

PluggingAway · 23/07/2021 12:18

It's your money. You've wanted it for a very long time and can afford it. Just buy the watch.

Googlewasmyidea1 · 23/07/2021 12:19

@hulahooper2

Why would you assume it's a fake?
RollaCola84 · 23/07/2021 12:19

I don't either of you is unreasonable, just have different views. If it's your money and not going to cause any financial issues by being spent on the watch then go for it.

I have an Omega that was a 21st birthday present from my now deceased grandmother, my mum thought it was ridiculous amount of money at the time but acknowledged my nan wanted to buy me something I'd keep and would enjoy, and this was what I wanted. I've worn it practically every day of the 15+ years since she bought it for me and still love it. They also at least hold value so if I ever needed to sell it I could.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 23/07/2021 12:22

I think if you want it then it's up to you. Everyone has different things they'd like, this is what you want.
