DH says I’m ridiculous for wanting to spend this amount of money on a watch, who is BU?

I’ve been lusting after a Rolex datejust for as long as I can remember, but have always stopped myself from buying because there has always been something more ‘sensible’ to do with the money, like keeping it in savings or spending money on an experience like a holiday. This year I’ve been feeling pretty low what with the current situation and there’s no way I’ll be able to go on holiday this year as I’m vulnerable health wise.

Announced to DH this morning that I’m thinking about treating myself to a nice pre owned Rolex (£6k) on the basis that it’s what I’d usually spend on holidays in a year anyway and they hold their value pretty well, in the event that I ever wanted/needed to sell.

DH thinks I’m being absolutely ridiculous spending such a large amount of money on a watch and now I’m wondering whether I’m having a moment of madness. I should point out that the funds would be coming from my own pot of money, rather than joint.

A Rolex is an investment so I say go for it

HollowTalk · 23/07/2021 11:47

What does he spend his money on?

It's a good use of money though, isn't it, if it holds its value?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/07/2021 11:47

@Shade17

Just do it and remind him that it’s not actually that much money for a nice watch!
It's still a silly amount for something whose only purpose is to show the current time.
pinkcircustop · 23/07/2021 11:48

Total waste of money.

TeapotCollection · 23/07/2021 11:49

My watch was £3.99 from Wilko and I bet it tells the same time as any Rolex 😀

But I’m in the your money your choice camp. If you can afford it go for it

I wouldn’t spend £££ on a handbag either but I know lots of people do. Each to their own 🤷‍♀️

Shade17 · 23/07/2021 11:49

Also some models are very difficult to get hold of new, demand is much higher than supply and waiting lists can be long.

BIG waiting lists on Daytona’s for example, used ones currently available range from £15k to £125k

Allgreyeverything · 23/07/2021 11:49

Buy it. I bought myself a Cartier watch for 30th birthday and honestly every time I wear it, it gives me joy and I got so many compliments over the years.
Also, you will still be lusting over it in a few years but they will be more expensive, so you are practically saving money 😇

Shade17 · 23/07/2021 11:50

Daytonas even!

fraddu · 23/07/2021 11:50

neither of you are wrong, just different views.

3luckystars · 23/07/2021 11:51

Nuts to me but if you have the money and it makes you happy then there is nothing stopping you.

Even if I was loaded I couldn’t do it though. Things like that do not make me feel good at all, I know they make most people feel confident but it would be the total opposite for me.
All the best.

Debetswell · 23/07/2021 11:52

40 years ago I spent £80 on a watch for dh. A months wages for me.
I asked about pricey watches and was told that the mechanism was no different after a certain price. The watch is then jewellery and how much you spend is an aesthetic preference.
If you like the watch and will wear it then it's no different to buying oneself an expensive bracelet.
Your money, your choice.

fraddu · 23/07/2021 11:52

But this post is going to attract all the posters who can afford 20k watches but choose to draw one on their wrist instead as they were raised correctly 🙄

Chunkymenrock · 23/07/2021 11:53

I definitely wouldn't. Just not worth it. But it's your money and what you buy is completely up to you and none of your H's business.

Orf1abc · 23/07/2021 11:54

Can I ask what the appeal is? I've had a look and it looks like a thousand other watches.

Hallyup6 · 23/07/2021 11:54

£6k for a watch is absolutely insane imo, but it's your money so do what you like. I find it more insane that married couples have his and her money, personally.

ZaraW · 23/07/2021 11:54

Your money your decision. Personally I wouldn't as the servicing fees are really high. Something like £400. That was a few years ago when my friend sent hers off for a new battery.

Maggiesfarm · 23/07/2021 11:55

@ThatOtherPoster

If they retain their value, why buy a second-hand one?
Probably because you can bargains when you buy second hand; there are people who are anxious to sell things fairly quickly, maybe from an inheritance.
Paint69 · 23/07/2021 11:56

Gosh it's tricky in terms of BU. My DH is a high earner, but I don't think he could justify £6000 on a watch either. But if you don't need the money for other things and you really want it, then I say go for it. If it will retain its value, I can't see how it would be a bad decision really.

Longdistance · 23/07/2021 11:56

Go for it. It’s always good to have something nice and that’s going to be of use. I want to buy myself a Cartier, but the last thing I bought was a Mercedes coupe, that gives me pleasure every time I drive it and speed off Blush

Gardenwalldilema · 23/07/2021 11:58

DP recently bought me a datejust. It truly is a thing of beauty and makes me feel amazing. It'll hopefully get handed on to dd (unless times get unexpectedly hard and I have to flog it Sad).
I'd say go for it, as you say you'd have spent the money on a holiday and it would be gone anyway. This is a much better investment.

Orf1abc · 23/07/2021 11:58

Probably because you can bargains when you buy second hand; there are people who are anxious to sell things fairly quickly, maybe from an inheritance.

In which case, it has not retained its value.

Topseyt · 23/07/2021 11:58

Your money, you do what you want with it.

I personally find it a ridiculous amount to spend on a watch and would have no interest at all in owning a Rolex, but if that is what floats your boat and you can afford it then go for it.

Amboseli · 23/07/2021 11:58

I think it's crazy to spend that much on a watch! Even if you can afford it. But then I'm just not into status symbols etc. Each to their own though. If it will make you happy do it!

Allgreyeverything · 23/07/2021 11:59

Rolex watches are automatic so she wouldn’t need a new battery as they don’t have batteries
HelloDulling · 23/07/2021 12:00

I love my Rolex, it’s a 1977 Oyster perpetual. Wear it every single day and never look at other watches in shop windows. This is The One.
