Applying to Soho House

348 replies

Awlondoner · 23/07/2021 10:44

Hi everyone! I am trying to apply to Soho House London at the moment, and have the backing of two proposers. I was wondering if anyone was a member, knew what the process was like? How long should I expect to wait to hear whether I have got in?

Thank you!

This thread is great. It's what brings me back to AIBU time and time again to see arses handed to people on plates.

@VeganCow

Why is the price double for over age 27s?!

I would think it's because the under 27s spend a lot more on alcohol in the club than the older members. I certainly drank a lot more in my 20s, nowadays I try to meet clients for lunch or coffee.

Yes it's what I hate about mumsnet, but clearly it brings in the punters.
Eeiliethya · 24/07/2021 12:01

Ok so have googled.

Still not entirely sure WTF it is, a posh club for drinks?

What's the benefit to cost? I don't get it?

I mean, I'm not jealous because I could technically afford this but whilst it sounds nice to have a quiet drink with other spiffing individuals, I'm much more common in the sense I would have more fun down my local getting shit faced on pints of Stella 🤣.

Yes it's great isn't it. How dare these utter bastards try to do nice things and enjoy their lives when there are people dying in the world. I wish people would realise that they should all stay at home eating Lidl ham and wearing clothes from Oxfam in case they offend other people.

@ImbarbaraB

Definitely not misunderstood the nature of their business. I’ve friends who are members, friends who are friends members and family who just like their products and buy all Soho Home branded items.

It’s not really anything that can’t be had elsewhere without a membership. The people who pay for expensive membership really don’t get a lot more than the people who have friend members

The friends members still get discounted room rates so it really makes no difference if you plan on visiting one to stay in, you’re not getting a better rate being a more expensive ‘specially selected’ member.

It’s just a way for people to pay to make themselves feel more special and that’s their business model

The only people who I know that are members are highly insecure and this gives them what they need to feel good about themselves at that moment in time

This is just an observation from the people I know and is therefore purely anecdotal

Well the fact that you seem to be basing it a lot on the idea that it’s generally somewhere people visit and stay rather than drop in is the antithesis of what it was originally meant to be. The rooms and hotel style accommodation came later on with the massive expansion and to a lesser or greater extent now it is more of a hotel chain. The original intent was a meeting place for people who lived and/or worked in Soho not a mini break destination for out of towners. In this way it was quite different from the original ‘gentleman’s’ clubs which were all about giving people a place to stay when they came up from their country pile for the weekend. Like I said it is somewhere that has overexpanded as evidenced by the fact that seemingly everyone in your circle has jumped on the bandwagon in some way or another, it just means it has become a mass market product rather than something more exclusive as it used to be 20 odd years ago. A bit like Jo Malone, was lovely and quite exclusive, expanded massively and is now aspirational mainstream,

It's impossible to hold onto the exclusivity when your business has expanded that much.

LittleGwyneth · 24/07/2021 12:48

I imagine it'll be pretty quick because they're desp for money at the moment. White City is usually quietest, Dean Street still nicest AFAIC, but to be totally honest I'm not sure it's worth the cost unless you're using it as a co-working space.

Angelica789 · 24/07/2021 16:06

Looked up The Ned on tripadvisor after that description of it as ‘a cool Disneyland for out of towners’. The reviews are terrible. Seems like if you’re not a member you get treated with contempt despite paying ££££.

Cretin? Yeah, you might like to look up the meaning of that word before calling other people stupid.

Lemonmelonsun · 24/07/2021 16:43

@Bryonyshcmyony

Does Dean Street one get film people in? Lots of filmy places near by..

Oblomov21 · 24/07/2021 16:47

The membership and getting other members to approve/sign your application is just so embarrassing. I couldn't do it. It's cringeworthy.

Always used to yes

JanuaryJonez · 24/07/2021 17:11

I've just read that they have never made a profit since first opening. Wow.

How can that be??

Clever accounting.
Yep
Diva66 · 24/07/2021 18:14

I heard after I’d been accepted straight away.

Fluffmum · 24/07/2021 18:18

Don’t know what you’re talking about sorry

DrNOmeansNO · 24/07/2021 18:20

I’m presuming a lot of the people commenting negatively on this thread have never been. Farmhouse is actually lovely. The facilities are great, the staff are friendly, and no one is up their own arse unlike neighbouring Daylesford farm (where anyone can visit). The membership price is pretty reasonable if you live nearby - considering a gym membership in London can be well over £120 p/m. It’s not about the money - that’s the whole point. The ‘assumptions’ of it being full of people wanting an ego boost are so off the mark Hmm

Awlondoner · 24/07/2021 18:20

Oh cool! Which house was this for?

Surely the OP is someone at mumsnet HQ having a laugh as it’s like most threads on here that stir up vitriol and amusement in equal measure generating clicks. It only works as they’ve guaged the huge divide between those with a sense of humour and those with a sense of entitlement and righteousness….of which there are a few on MN. Lighten up guys and stop taking it all so seriously……😉

Flossatops · 24/07/2021 18:36

I know a few creative types who are members and they'd never dream of asking such a question on a common place site like this. Perhaps that you have suggests that you may find the place deadly dull, but best of luck if it's a burning desire. It's a good question for a bit of stirring however 🙂

rudybeaatie · 24/07/2021 19:16

I honestly wouldn’t bother becoming a member, and you likely won’t unless you have a desirable job to those in membership or have impressive contact/sponsors.
