....should offer to exchange it for something more appropriate for a 6 year old? So far the reaction has been 'oh...is that what it is? Really? hahahahaha....I didn't realise, I just thought the colours were pretty'. When I suggested she might want to return it, she looked at me as if I was out of my mind.

Why did they give it to her? She's not going to know what it is is she? I don't think I would know what it was!

Earlybird · 26/11/2007 18:47

It was an early Christmas gift.

Erm, you could focus on the eco-friendly nature of hemp as a fabric!

Buda · 26/11/2007 18:48

Well I wouldn't have a clue what a marijuana leaf looked like in the first place so it would be ok here!

policywonk · 26/11/2007 18:49

Sounds as though she made a genuine mistake - and as Walnutshell says, hemp (which is a completely legal substance) also comes from the cannabis sativa plant.

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 18:49

Thus

Earlybird · 26/11/2007 18:50

It was given at a family function. All the women were saying 'oh, how nice', and all the men were sniggering.

There is an entire shop in Brighton devoted to hemp and its many uses. You would not belieeeeeve how many things they can make out of hemp.

policywonk · 26/11/2007 18:52

Sorry earlybird, I'm wittering on about hemp because a lot of hemp products use the marijuana leaf icon.

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 18:53

I have a lovely little bag made from hemp that I use daily.

The association with funny fags will eventually recede!

Probably doesn't help you though.

Earlybird · 26/11/2007 18:53

The change purse is dark green, and the leaf is bright red with yellow accents....so not unobtrusive.

OP posts:
Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 18:54

I can see your point.

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 18:55

But admire!

Earlybird · 26/11/2007 18:56

I'be be inclined to overlook if the gift came from far away/was bought on holiday etc. But the shop where it comes from is about 2 miles from the area where this person lives/works.

OP posts:
Earlybird · 26/11/2007 18:57

Very nice....but don't you agree, no matter how nice, not suitable for a 6 year old?

OP posts:
Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 18:57

Has it actually been given to your dd and is she inclined to keep it?

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 18:59

Yes I do agree and the symbol you have described is particularly relevant for the cannabis that is suitable for smoking etc rather than that farmed for other uses and is actually useless for smoking.

LittleBella · 26/11/2007 19:10

Count your blessings, it could have been a playboy bunny.

Happynow · 26/11/2007 19:22

Sorry, but I do think you're being a bit unreasonable. It seems the person genuinely just thought it was a pretty purse for your daughter. I think it's actually quite rude to expect someone to exchange it and get affronted when they don't offer. But I was taught to 'never look a gift horse in the mouth' (which has given my mother the excuse to give me some truly dreadful stuff over the years!!) . Are you worried this will encourage your daughter to smoke dope? It won't. I think you are worried about what others may think. I would think you had a sense of humour.

LoulaB · 26/11/2007 19:35

oh my god you really have got too much time on your hands.

ScottishMummy · 26/11/2007 19:37

a genuine mistake, good intention gone awry, thats all. so smile graciously, send a thank you card - no big deal
