I love sunny weather, but I just cant with this heat. House is like a hot box. Have tried all the tricks with opening windows at night etc etc, keeping curtains closed in hot sun, but I'm sitting at my computer overheating. I miss the sea - used to live beside the sea and it was never this still, always a sea breeze. Anyone else want to have a moan with me

YABU. I’m loving it but sadly can’t properly enjoy it as am working all week. Off on my longed-for 6-day family summer hol just me & the kids this weekend. We’d got such high hopes for a hol together so if it rains all next week I’ll be bereft at the injustice!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/07/2021 06:15

I'd usually be miffed to wake up early when there is the chance of a lay in but currently enjoying the coolness.

Its counter productive but as soon as it starts getting warmer today make sure windows are closed and blinds/curtains drawn on the sunny side of the house.

Having a breeze can feel nice but its just the sensation of air moving over your body, its not actually cooler air, if its 31 deg outside you are just bringing that 31 deg into your house, better to keep the air in your house cooler for aa long as possible and move it with fans instead.

PandasCatsWolves · 22/07/2021 06:32

After 8 am I shut up the entire house and close curtains. Every window.

My house has remained about 23 degrees inside. Upstairs bedrooms a bit warmer but not much.

lol

PandasCatsWolves · 22/07/2021 06:35

Dropped phone and hit send and wrote lol sorry! Sounds goady! It's not.

I found from experience- I have to start this right at the start of the heat wave -as the house will warm up too much if windows are open i the day.

I'm up now got alll windows and doors open.

Ilikeknitting · 22/07/2021 06:54

I love the sunshine but this week has really hurt me!

The air was so heavy I felt I couldn’t breath, I was sweating doing nothing, I felt sick everytime I moved and I got up at 5.30am yesterday to do the ironing.

Dh wfh is suffering too, he’s trapped in his office on the third floor (3 storey town house) where all the heat rises to and the windows have limited openings.
I don’t usually moan about summer sunshine but this week has been a sickly heat.

newnortherner111 · 22/07/2021 06:55

Weather presenters should not assume everyone likes warmer weather. I think also terms such as 'extreme heat' should not be used- it was 47C in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago.

Night time temperature is also a factor.

Yeah my house is 3 stories its such a difference in the bedrooms, I might sleep in the living room tonight if its unbearable!

Considered a ceiling fan but I think I must be a weirdo as I just can't sleep with a fan on me, feel fine when I'm awake, weird if I'm trying to fall asleep :/

CoffeeWithCheese · 22/07/2021 08:55

People were fit to fight over the remaining fans in Homebase the other day - guy nearly grabbed the aircon unit I'd click and collected out of my hands!

Leafy2018 · 22/07/2021 09:07

38.5 weeks pregnant and cannot wait for fresher weather. It's been way too hot.

Propagandalf · 22/07/2021 10:50

For the minority that voted YABU, how do you acclimatise to the heat? Did you spend several years living in a hotter country like Spain or Italy?

@Propagandalf - think it depends on lots of things (temperament, upbringing, outlook, jobs people do, personality, living arrangements, personal preferences etc).

Basically we’re just all different. I love how different & unique each human is, and how there’s room for us all to differ on our likes.

  • Blinds/shutters angled the right way and open windows night and day. Most UK houses are severely lacking in this area.
  • Not go out in the sun between the hours of 10am and 7pm. If you must, walk on the shadier side of the road.
  • Never, ever sit in full sun, and certainly not without a hat.
  • Drink lots of water in small amounts during the day.

The key issue is that neither buildings nor life in the UK (timings, shopping/working hours, etc) are geared towards the hot weather, as it's scarce.

There is a very, very good reason why 'siesta' is a thing. It's not a nap, it's staying indoors and resting when the temperature outside is hottest, have a chance to digest your lunch at least.

LemonSherbetFancies · 22/07/2021 13:28

It's making me so irritable now. Sick of being drenched in sweat and the tiredness and sick feeling I have. Can't believe people enjoy this.

MuckyPlucky · 22/07/2021 14:20

All those of you saying “I can’t believe other people enjoy this weather”…. Have you never come across people who differ from you in terms of tastes/preferences??

It’s like the heat has made a sizeable chunk of you suddenly forget that not everyone is the same! Hmm

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 22/07/2021 14:22

You are all BU! I love it , but need about an hour of cool weather cos I need to go up I'm my loft

Yesitsbess · 22/07/2021 15:32

Thirty two here...thirty two! I've had to call off loads of work and my chickens are melting.

strawberrysalsa · 22/07/2021 15:34

I have to agree this hot weather is making me.... and my cats miserable.

But I also agree that as soon as it starts raining we'll also moan! With all the recent stupidity over deciding if someone is English enough I propose a simple test....'do you moan about the weather?' , if you answer 'yes" then you're English !

cakeseeker · 22/07/2021 15:40

I don't know - I love rain and clouds. The only weather I absolutely can't stand is hot weather like this. There will be zero complaints from me when it turns!

Sh05 · 22/07/2021 15:40

30 at 11 am this morning. We rearranged an appointment to 10 instead of 2 but I'm still sat with ice on the back of my head as car was parked only a 5 minute walk away and we got caught in the heavy sunshine walking back.
On a related note does anyone have any alternative methods of relieving a throbbing sun headache? I've taken paracetamol and been sat with ice for twenty minute intervals but it's not making a difference.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 22/07/2021 15:44

21 and rain predicted here on Saturday....can’t wait.

ineedaholidayandwine · 22/07/2021 15:50

Same. I'm so damned tired due to not sleeping/4yr old not sleeping, hoping the cooler temps will settle us all.
I bloody love some sun and heat but this has been too long

ginghamtablecloths · 22/07/2021 15:56

Yes, It's a bit much isn't it? I hate feeling hot and sticky - I've got no energy and I refuse to do the housework, not that I need much of an excuse. I hate extremes. I downsized to a small new build with just one reception room which faces south and it's almost unbearable.

There is a bit of a breeze by the side of the house which is in the shade and it's quite pleasant. I'm keeping my fluids up with lots of tea and I put my wrists under a cold tap which helps if only on a temporary basis - better than nothing.

ginghamtablecloths · 22/07/2021 15:58

I used to get terrible migraines in the heat, Sh05 - keep your fluids up - it may help and I hope you feel better soon.

DinosaurDiana · 22/07/2021 16:00

I have had more than enough. And Nobbly Bobbly’s are out of stock at Tesco 😤😤😤
