Everything seems to have accelerated with heat dome in pacific causing 1 billion creatures dying to the floods in Germany, etc.
We are running out of time and stuck with politicians that will not lead.

@jasjas1973 yes to hydrogen cars, I’m holding off going electric as I think they’ll be the next diesel. I also don’t have a drive, my house is set far back from the road so would only be able to charge by running extensions out on to the pavement which is a trip hazard and I honestly don’t believe the infrastructure will be in place to support that many electric vehicles. What happens if there is an accident on the motorway or traffic jams you’re stuck in for hours? They won’t just stop happening because everyone went electric. Also better hope the battery doesn’t go wrong as they’re £1,000s to replace

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 20/07/2021 11:03

I also rely on my car with living rurally nowhere near schools, shops etc and I work in community nursing so need my car

Dollpiglet · 20/07/2021 11:09

I could live without a car if I could have an electric bike but they are more than my car for a decent one and it'd get nicked within a day if I locked it up near the shops. If they could invest in cycling routes everywhere and secure lock ups, and provide more community support for big loads (e.g. taking stuff to the tip) then we could definitely stop car use.

Ooodlesofboodles · 20/07/2021 14:03

@bluewanda ah I'm talking from my own experience, changes mandated to certain manufacturing processes to reduce pollution and implemented incredibly fast. Within a three year period the difference was astonishing. Wildlife came back to areas I'd never even seen an insect in before.
Believe me I am not saying they are doing all they should or could, neither we. But I think they will, and in short order. The issues discussed on this thread hurt their people and their economy too.

Ooodlesofboodles · 20/07/2021 14:05

I'd happily cycle everywhere, what stops me are the nutters in cars and no separation from them. Plus the showers at work are unisex Confused

UnsolicitedDickPic · 20/07/2021 16:03

@Taliskerskye

Who cares! I mean why do you actually care. You’ll be dead in 50-70 years
But our children won't be. I find attitudes like yours fucking baffling, if I'm honest. Should we not give a toss simply because we won't be around to see the end result of our shitbaggery?
crackofdoom · 20/07/2021 20:47

Again though, why can't we have a positive message of change? Why not 'lets radically retrofit all our houses so everyone has cheap heating bills and we generate a ton of jobs in the process'. And 'lets massively improve our cycling infrastructure and pedestrianise' so that people can make healthy choices and town centres are great places to sit out in'. And 'lets clean up our rivers so they are fab places to visit and swim in'. And 'lets stimulate a fantastic social enterprise and co-op movement so that more people can work at places they have a stake in'.

I couldn't agree more, wherearemychickens.

A low carbon future could mean warmer homes, lower energy bills, more beautiful, natural surroundings, more wildlife, cleaner seas and rivers, high speed trains rather than short haul flights (does anyone actually enjoy airports and flying?), less commuting, more satisfying, meaningful jobs, a slower pace of life, more social interaction and a fitter, healthier population.

There seems to be quite the media push to try and convince us that the whole thing equates to "The lefty snowflakes want to take your SUVs and burgers away!" Hmm

Have you read books about this? It's normal to have cycles of cooling and warming. There's so many factors that influence climate.

You need to look at the rate of change and CO2 in the atmosphere, happening incredibly fast.

But how does anyone expect the pop. to change when you have 3 dickhead billionaires jetting off into space?

Sarahlou63 · 20/07/2021 21:33

Top headlines in the Guardian tonight. The DM leads on Prince Harry's book Hmm

Er yes @wordsareveryunnecessary and human activity is a big one, as agreed by pretty much all scientists Hmm

Bit of wild idea until you actually read Stark, written in 1989. (Shit movie though!)

Manycupsoftea · 20/07/2021 22:39

They would never get elected (or reelected if they did it mid term)

Exactly... so how will we move to lower carbon emissions even if we know it's the right thing to do?

Kendodd · 20/07/2021 22:53

Are you talking about that well known climate scientist (not) Nigel Lawson's book?
