How many books does your child have?

I was putting away the books my DC got for their birthdays (a couple of months ago!) and took off the shelf some that were too young or had been read but I didn't think they would read again etc.

I can't help but think they have tonnes of books! I remember as a child having probably less than a quarter of what they have and read them over and over. Not sure they have ever re-read a book! They have 2 shelves each packed with books plus another 20 odd books on another shelf (tall ones that don't fit in bookcase). My DS also has a couple of big Trofast bins filled with books he has bought (as he is very precious about his books and doesn't like anyone touching them!) And that's only fiction they have a shelf each of non-fiction downstairs! My DD also reads books on her Kindle and has all the Mallory Towers, all the Worst Witch and various others on there.

My DS is a book worm and DD is getting really into reading now too. They are 14 and 9. I know some people say 'you can never have enough books' - I don't really agree with this - I only have a small house so there has to be some limits! And the library is always there.

Interested to hear how many books your DC have and if you set any limits?

My son loves books and has four shelves of a narrow book shelf full. He does let us donate some to his school library or charity shops sometimes so they stay manageable. His only stipulation is that I'm not allowed to get rid of his precious Mr men books which take up a whole shelf. He has grown out of them and doesnt read them but still won't allow me to get rid. They are like a security blanket I suppose. He has autism and gets very attached to things.

Budgetating · 19/07/2021 15:49

I stopped counting DS's at 300, he has another bookcase and DD has more than he has in her room. Plus they have 1.5m on the bookshelf in the living room... I have no more space for books and they are going to have to sort some to give away or store over the summer.

Darnedit · 19/07/2021 15:57

My teens 14 and 18 have several hundred books. My youngest reads about 2/3 books a week ranging from YA to classics to cutting edge new releases. I really wanted to pass on my love of reading and thankfully I did! Can never be lonely or too sad when I can reach for a book.
Every now and then they have a clear out of books they won’t reread and I do a “free for pickup” on FB and they always get snapped up.

britnay · 19/07/2021 15:57

Youngest (6) has 2.5 shelves of fiction books. Eldest (9) has 4 shelves of fiction books. They also have 3.5 shelves of non fiction books in the library.
We live rurally and our local library is small and has a limited selection. They hardly ever have the first book in a series and the books are very mixed up in terms of child age and reading ability. Its hard to find anything suitable.
We sort through books every few months and anything that they don't read anymore goes to charity shops. They both love reading and choose new books from the book shop whenever we are in the nearest city.

NewYearmorestress · 19/07/2021 16:02

12 year old has hundreds of books

AlwaysColdHands · 19/07/2021 16:05

Hundreds - easily 500, maybe a lot more. Ages 2 and 7. And we are at the library every few weeks
I was exactly the same as a child Smile
I desperately hope they never lose their love for books!

Comedycook · 19/07/2021 16:08

Loads. I always said I wouldn't say no if they asked for books but it got really out of hand as my dd wanted so many I spent £60 in a couple of weeks on them ..I usually buy second hand on eBay too.

VerySmallPears · 19/07/2021 16:08

They each have a four shelf, waist high bookcase plus one long high shelf in their rooms, these are full (double stacked). Plus lots on their e-readers. And that after giving a car boot full away to school, of ones they’d outgrown.

YoutubeZoom · 19/07/2021 16:09

DS has hundreds of books as well. He is 13. This is the only thing we never refuse and do not have a limit for.
We are trying to save money, so for the past few years I read quite a few of his books. Young adult fiction is pretty good.

cliffdiver · 19/07/2021 16:11

DDs are 7 and 9.

Hundreds.

We have a 6 shelf unit in the playroom for 'daytime reading' plus their 'bedtime reading' box sets / novels in their bedrooms.

Also have a dozen or so library books out at any time.

summersflowers · 19/07/2021 16:12

Kindle?

FuzzyPenguin · 19/07/2021 16:13

DS7 has 285 books, I am working from home bored in his room and counted them…

pleasedonttextmyman · 19/07/2021 16:14

It has never occur to me to actually count the books, but my kids have a tall billy bookcase until reception, and a second one from year 1. They are packed, I am forever trying to get rid of books!

Lockdowns didn't help and their books have invaded the landing, but we normally have a big clear out after the summer holidays.

I had just as many when I was a child.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/07/2021 16:14

Hundreds. They each have a full to bursting smaller size Billy bookcase of fiction, with piles on top. Taller books elsewhere. Other piles all over the place.

Part of the reason they have so many is its cheaper to buy boxsets from discount stores than just one or two books individually.

They donate outgrown books regularly.

Caspianberg · 19/07/2021 16:14

Ds is 1. He has 2 bookshelves, they are about half full at the moment. Plus a small basket of little board books. At a guess around 50?

Cloudninenine · 19/07/2021 16:14

Don’t set a limit - get them kindles instead. Or see if they will donate old books they’ve outgrown.

KarlUrbansWife · 19/07/2021 16:15

DD6 has about 150, DS4 has far fewer but we regularly borrow from big sis.
I would keep as many books as you have space for.

Wrotten · 19/07/2021 16:15

Hundreds of them and he bloody loves them!

UndertheCedartree · 19/07/2021 16:16

@NickyOy - my DS is Autistic too. This is why we can't touch his books!
@Budgetating - yes that's it there is only so much space!
@Darnedit - yes, I love books too! And I'm not going to lie the largest chunk of their books have been bought by me!
@britnay - I think a regular sort out is a good idea. The trouble is they never want to get rid of anything! I've had to hide the books I'm intending to take to the charity shop that my DD has grown out of as she won't want to let them go!
@AlwaysColdHands - I loved going to the library as a child. But I was always in need of new reading material. My two like going now and again but they have so many of their own books to read the pull isn't there as it was for me!

None.
They use kindles.

DayKay · 19/07/2021 16:18

My eldest is a teenager and I’ve bought so many books since he was born, kept them to pass on to younger siblings, bought his younger siblings books of their own as they have different tastes and now buying adult books as dc1 wants to read them.
We’re overrun with books but I just can’t bring myself to get rid of them.
I really need to declutter this summer.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/07/2021 16:20

No idea but 6 yo os encouraged to pass on books he no longer likes so it isnt taking up space that's needed.

Thesearmsofmine · 19/07/2021 16:20

Hundreds! We do home ed, so have a lot of non fiction books alongside fiction but ds1 in particular likes to read them, They get reread regularly.
I do a sort out every six months or so to get get of a few.

UndertheCedartree · 19/07/2021 16:21

@YoutubeZoom - I read my DS's books too. YA fiction can be really good.

I read to them every night too so I get to read their books then too. We take it in turns to choose the book - but it has to be suitable for the youngest.

@summersflowers - my youngest has a Kindle and will read on there. I think going forward I will try to get most of her books on there. She'll still have new actual books as DS passes down to her. My DS doesn't like reading on a Kindle, though.

@FuzzyPenguin - thanks for a very specific answer! I feel like I need to count all our books now! Grin
