How many books does your child have?

I was putting away the books my DC got for their birthdays (a couple of months ago!) and took off the shelf some that were too young or had been read but I didn't think they would read again etc.

I can't help but think they have tonnes of books! I remember as a child having probably less than a quarter of what they have and read them over and over. Not sure they have ever re-read a book! They have 2 shelves each packed with books plus another 20 odd books on another shelf (tall ones that don't fit in bookcase). My DS also has a couple of big Trofast bins filled with books he has bought (as he is very precious about his books and doesn't like anyone touching them!) And that's only fiction they have a shelf each of non-fiction downstairs! My DD also reads books on her Kindle and has all the Mallory Towers, all the Worst Witch and various others on there.

My DS is a book worm and DD is getting really into reading now too. They are 14 and 9. I know some people say 'you can never have enough books' - I don't really agree with this - I only have a small house so there has to be some limits! And the library is always there.

Interested to hear how many books your DC have and if you set any limits?

My kids have a tall billy-type bookshelf each (so 6/7 shelves) plus about 2 other billy bookshelves full of their books.

They also share 2 kindles (3 kids) for when when we go away. About 300 books on there.

DH & I also have hundreds of books. They're on shelves, stacked up next to the shelves, stacked up on the floor...And I have a kindle...

@UndertheCedartree So glad, I found a sister soul. I am always self-conscious to admit reading YA. This way I know what he reads though and we can discuss it.

YoutubeZoom · 19/07/2021 18:05

We also give away books to charity and DS stole my kindle. Books still multiply.

I miss buying dd books.
Can't compete with youtube etc.

SlothinSpirit · 19/07/2021 18:17

@UndertheCedartree. The Tiger who came to Tea was one of my DC's absolutely favourites a few months ago and still gets frequent outings. I was forced to bake biscuits and buns frequently (including pretend ones when I refused to do any more real ones Grin) and had to take part in endless tea parties with various stuffed animals including a lopsided llama.

This thread is making me want to buy more books Confused. Need to resist the urge...

A full six-shelf bookcase (some shelves two deep!), DD has a tall narrow bookcase full and DS has a four shelf bookcase full. Plus a Kindle. Plus a huge plastic box full of comics. I need to get rid of most of the picture books really but I don’t like to!

DS has still requested “lots of books” for his birthday. I’ve got a big cardboard box I’m filling with any decent charity shop books in good condition, eBay buys and a couple of new ones. He’ll probably get 20/30 books and read them all in a couple of weeks. I hardly buy any brand new, mostly box sets or if I want something specific to read to them.

We have about 50 at any one time but always rotating them around with friends and people of local Facebook page

Carboholic · 19/07/2021 18:34

Kids (3 and 5) have 7 Kallax cubbies filled, the grownups another 33 plus a stray half shelf. Maybe 20 grownup books per cubby or 40 kiddo books per cubby? So around a 1000 in the house.

CoodleMoodle · 19/07/2021 18:45

We have a full bookcase full in the living room. Three shelves absolutely stuffed, with books jammed in sideways and everything. They're spilling out onto the fireplace... They also have a box full of Mr Men books (every one, some were mine from childhood and some have been collected more recently). And at any one time we have two bags full of library books which get changed every week or two (2 different libraries).

DD(7) has a tall but slim bookshelf in her room, also crammed full. Mostly short chapter books but a few A4 size. Reading is her favourite thing to do, and I've encouraged it from birth.

DS(3) has a small, 3 shelf one in his room. First shelf is all That's Not My... books, the other two are mostly board books or short stories (Spot, Peppa, etc). We couldn't squeeze another book on if we tried. He likes books but not as much as DD.

AhNowTed · 19/07/2021 18:49

Loads, and you can't possibly keep them all.

I basically thinned them out as the kids got older.

00100001 · 19/07/2021 18:55

DS17, about 15-20

He has some he keeps because he'll happily re-read them 1-2 times a year (Harry Potter, LOTR and Wind in The Willows (Confused), Brideshead Revisited.)

Then he has a few he's currently reading. And will pass them in/return to library/donate etc.

Splann · 19/07/2021 19:02

Mine have hundreds but no way near as many as me Grin

yoyo1234 · 19/07/2021 19:12

Hundreds between them. Too many , they take up too much space.

Newmumatlast · 19/07/2021 19:13

My daughter isn't yet too and has over 100. Easily 120. Books are one thing I don't set a limit on but I will donate once she outgrow. I had loads of books as a child and it helped me massively

Jujujuly · 19/07/2021 19:21

I love buying books for mine. They are still tiny (3 and 8 months) and must have hundreds. I buy them secondhand or in sets and also have quite a few from my own childhood too. Reading stories to them is one of my favourite things to do.

Lolalime · 19/07/2021 19:23

Wow I’m shocked at how many some of you have! I’m an avid reader but rely mainly on the library or the free kindle books. It can get very expensive otherwise. I prefer real books but my asd child prefers the kindle as he can’t stand the feel of the pages.
I’d love a home library though - heaven

Rosebel · 19/07/2021 19:29

My daughter's both love reading. No sure how many books but they have 3 bookcases between them and piles of books next to the bookcase.
My son is only one and has possibly 10 books.
They all reread their books but I also love reading and have 2 bookcases so that's probably why I don't mind.
I think reading is a good skill but I'm probably biased just because the kids (15 and 13) love it so much. Much better than staring at a screen IMO.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 19/07/2021 19:31

2 & 4 and have hundreds. Probably 50+ board book types then loads more eg funny bones, julia Donaldson, little bear, mog, percy parkkeepper and the like

NoWordForFluffy · 19/07/2021 19:32

DD has a full bookcase and loads which won't fit on. DS has a full bookcase. We have a full bookcase in the lounge too. So many books! 🙈🤣

RobinPenguins · 19/07/2021 19:33

Far too many. I know what you mean about re-reading a smaller number of books, my mum kept most of ours and I can remember every single one now she gets them out to read with my DC and the other grandchildren. Loads of DC’s are crap but were gifts. I need a cull.

BrieAndChilli · 19/07/2021 19:36

I have a 14, 12 and 10 year old.
We have hundreds of books between the 5 of us. Study has 4 large ceiling to floor book shelves along one wall full of books.
All 3 kids have a couple of shelves of books in thier room and when we moved house we put quite a few boxes of books they had grown out of but didn’t want to throw away in the attic plus gave a few boxes away too!!

00100001 · 19/07/2021 19:48

Why do you all keep these books? do your kids re-read all of them??

IdblowJonSnow · 19/07/2021 19:50

Literally hundreds. They do reread them though! Not s stealth brag, they are just both very into reading.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 19/07/2021 19:51

Bazillions.

parietal · 19/07/2021 19:55

childrens books - probably 2 IKEA Billy bookcases full.
plus reference books & all the rest of the books in the house.

I give a lot of books away to charity shops - the kind of cheap books that you read once but don't need to come back to. and keep the quirky / interesting / special ones.
