How many books does your child have?

I was putting away the books my DC got for their birthdays (a couple of months ago!) and took off the shelf some that were too young or had been read but I didn't think they would read again etc.

I can't help but think they have tonnes of books! I remember as a child having probably less than a quarter of what they have and read them over and over. Not sure they have ever re-read a book! They have 2 shelves each packed with books plus another 20 odd books on another shelf (tall ones that don't fit in bookcase). My DS also has a couple of big Trofast bins filled with books he has bought (as he is very precious about his books and doesn't like anyone touching them!) And that's only fiction they have a shelf each of non-fiction downstairs! My DD also reads books on her Kindle and has all the Mallory Towers, all the Worst Witch and various others on there.

My DS is a book worm and DD is getting really into reading now too. They are 14 and 9. I know some people say 'you can never have enough books' - I don't really agree with this - I only have a small house so there has to be some limits! And the library is always there.

Interested to hear how many books your DC have and if you set any limits?

I never counted.

DD is at an age where she starts reading adult factual biographies or historical factual books, so she helps herself to our shelves as well. Plus she has a very good school library where she gets books from.

I know what you mean about space, we actively encourage DD to start using the library again she stopped when she was in between age ranges and the selection was not that good for her taste.

You can never have enough books but it doesn’t mean you have to own them, it is about having books available without restrictions in my opinion.

@UndertheCedartree thank you.
That's great and it's a lovely way to interest them. I might do 4-5 books about giants or under the sea. Connections and predictions are an amazing way to develop comprehension.
Quality over quantity at a young age can often be a problem. I hate those bloody Disney story books that condense a movie.

A full bookcase in our lounge Blush a lot are hand me downs from my sister, as her kids are much older, a lot have been gifts from family and friends, things like the road Dahl collection, Beatrix potter collection etc. I could easily spend a fortune on books, but I try not to. We use the library a lot too.
My kids are 3.5 and 1, so the ones that the 3.5 year old has grown out of, the 1 year old is taking an interest in e.g. 'that's not my...'. my 3.5 year old has a really good attention span for book after book after book, so I'm looking forward to being able to read longer things with him like roald dahl, the faraway tree, wishing chair etc.

Hundreds but books are cheap nowadays with places like The Works, I still mourn the loss of The Book People, spent a fortune there over the years.

I remember how disappointing it was as a child to want to spend my birthday money on a book and barely being able to afford one!
