People with coughs shouldn’t be allowed in restaurants?

AIBU to think people with continual coughs shouldn’t be allowed in a restaurant at the moment and to be annoyed a restaurant allowed someone with a very obvious cough dine there?

@Andrewsgirl

Bit of a difficult thing to establish though, whether it’s new or old cough !
Thing is, if you're going to eat out, you're going to have to take the risk that there are some utter bastards out there with brand new coughs, and possibly a fever, a loss of taste, Covid toes, and whatever else the symptoms are, but they've decided to just say fuck it and go ahead and infect everyone.

It's not very likely, but it is a possibility. That's a risk only you can choose whether or not to expose yourself to.

Dh and myself have coughs and were very ill as well, we both had negative pcr tests and are still coughing. Should we be banned as well?

Thedogscollar · 15/07/2021 01:03

Maybe stupid people should be banned from resturaunts too.
Looking at you OP.

I think in reality, many people would really dislike eating a meal next to someone who is repeatedly coughing. It's certainly a sensitive topic at the moment and disingenuous to pile on the OP.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 15/07/2021 01:04

My double-vaccinated son had a cold, and it's left him with a bit of a cough.

He's taken a Covid test, and also checked with his doctor, and he's been told that he should carry on as normal.

I was hoping to go out to dinner with him tonight. Now I'm wondering what kind of reaction he might get :-/

Those people do not have to eat out though.

Do you really think a double-vaccinated, recently tested person with hayfever should be banned from restaurants as per the OP's wishes?

Theblacksheepandme · 15/07/2021 01:12

Chunkymenrock
In reality people need to be sensible and realise not everyone with a cough could have covid and may have something else wrong with them. These people don't need to be made feel like shit for wanting an evening out.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/07/2021 01:14

Thanks to hayfever triggering an asthma reaction I have had this every summer for 20 years. So I suppose I should just never leave the house to pander to you.

Disliking something is not a reason to ban it. Op can dislike someone coughing all they want, they can't insist someone coughing being removed from an establishment because it upsets their sensibilities.

A cough doesn't always mean Covid though, and for that matter not everyone with Covid has a cough! There are many people with chronic coughs from asthma and allergies (and this is allergy season); COPD; etc.

which is exactly why they shouldn't be banned from restaurants!

sashh · 15/07/2021 01:52

Another asthmatic cougher here.

I'm also someone with a naturally low temperature, so checking that on entry wouldn't rule out a fever either, but that would be a more reasonable thing to do.

Kokeshi123 · 15/07/2021 01:52

Some people always cough due to certain types of asthma.

A friend of mine who has this issue had to buy a special badge saying "I have a cough caused by asthma" because she was getting dirty looks from people.

EmeraldShamrock · 15/07/2021 01:54

I cough in public behind my mask, I have asthma. Whenever I'm entering a shop I cough automatically not sure if it is the mask or a tic, when I've held my cough it gets worse.

Ludoole · 15/07/2021 02:05

Some people have no symptoms with covid, so should we all stay home and never go out just in case??

Badabingbadabum · 15/07/2021 02:08

I had Covid and barely had a cough. Hayfever makes me cough loads. Yabu

apocalypsehow · 15/07/2021 02:10

I cough because I have Tourette's syndrome.

So no. Get a grip.

Shelddd · 15/07/2021 02:16

Lots of people have been turned away from businesses for having a fever when a fever is a symptom of thousands of different conditions/infections/etc. How is it any different?

My husband has a lung disease that causes him to cough very frequently. Do you believe he shouldn't be allowed to eat in a restaurant? Or should he not be allowed out in public at all?

supersonicsue · 15/07/2021 02:28

MY reality is with a husband who has a non covid related cough. As he is clinically extremely vulnerable we have been shielding for well over a year, and have not ventured out at all except for when getting the vaccine. We were talking tonight about maybe going out to eat some time soon as we are so very bored with only eating the food we have cooked ourselves. After reading these posts maybe it is better we don't go after all. I feel really sad but the last thing we want is to make others feel uncomfortable. I feel rather stupid for not realising this myself. Stay home it is then.

FootballisgoingtoRome · 15/07/2021 02:30

What you on about my father has COPD is he not allowed to eat out. Mind your own business OP

clopper · 15/07/2021 02:35

I have a severe acid reflux cough, not covid. It’s not a new thing. I have felt like a social pariah for the last 18 months. People giving me awful looks as I go about my business. Not all coughs are covid related.

supersonicsue · 15/07/2021 02:36

You’re right. I’ll tell my friend whose husband has a terminal lung disease and coughs continuously they are not welcome in social places

So sorry. My husband has a lung disease that causes very frequent coughing too. This thread has made me realise some people would feel uncomfortable if he goes out and coughs. As he can't not cough I guess we stay home for even longer then.
