AIBU to think people with continual coughs shouldn’t be allowed in a restaurant at the moment and to be annoyed a restaurant allowed someone with a very obvious cough dine there?

Bit of a difficult thing to establish though, whether it’s new or old cough !

It’s this attitude that really annoys me. The person who’s coughing knows why they’re coughing - it’s got sod all to do with anyone else. Apart from anything else, if you have a Covid cough, you likely have other unpleasant symptoms as well, so the last thing you would be doing is dining out !!!

Rno3gfr · 16/07/2021 22:03

I hate people with attitudes like yours. My son has asthma and goes through phases of having bad coughs in relation to pollen. He’s had a negative Covid test in the morning and we’ve gone out for lunch in the afternoon but had people like you giving me dirty looks. GO AWAY.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 16/07/2021 22:08

I have hay fever plus cold-triggered asthma. Been coughing for about 15 years now.

Wind yer neck in. If you don’t want to be around us diseased ones, you can stay home.

ribbonsred · 16/07/2021 22:20

I know SEVEN people with continuous coughs:

  1. Hay fever
  2. Had pneumonia as a child
  3. Chest infection
  4. Had polio as a child
  5. Nervousness
  6. Long covid
  7. Smoker

@Andrewsgirl

I’m not trying to wind anyone up. I am interested in what other peoples thoughts are. When I made the booking the email confirmation clearly says you should not attend if you have Covid symptoms. A continual cough is a Covid symptom. I was shocked to sit at a table next to a diner who spent most of the night continually coughing.
But when they say 'Covid symptoms' they assume that will be interpreted with some common sense, not stupid literal-mindedness. If you have a cough but have tested negative for Covid, it's not a Covid symptom. If you had Covid 3 months ago and still have a residual cough, it's not a Covid symptom. If you always have an asthmatic cough, then it's not a new cough so it's not a Covid symptom.

Would you be ok with people getting all huffy and judgemental and wanting to exclude you from public places because they saw you looking a bit hot and sweaty?

saveforthat · 16/07/2021 22:35

I don't mind people coughing as long as they cover their mouths.

Madjakelmum · 16/07/2021 23:00

How about you stay out of restaurants you so over the top I have a cough but I’ll be dining out. And if any said anything to me I’d be kicking off.

Genzymoo · 16/07/2021 23:04

Absolutely not.

My daughters have had colds, often including coughs, almost constantly since they returned to nursery in the summer of last year. We do the sensible thing and get them tested, but we can't stop living our lives once it is confirmed it's just a cold.

People cough for many reasons. You have to make a decision about whether you trust people (in general) to be sensible enough to identify a new and continuous cough (inc differentiating from a pre-existing cough), test and act accordingly. Hopefully most people will behave responsibility, but inevitably some people won't. There will always be a risk from people who don't take precautions, but those that do shouldn't be penalised. Inevitably some people won't be comfortable running the risk of sitting near a coughing person, so may think about whether they want to go to a restaurant at all.

StressyWoman · 16/07/2021 23:05

It’s only if it’s a new cough it’s a symptom. I think people are embarrassed to cough in public as it is. I got called disgusting for “sneezing all over a post box” when in reality I sneezed while stood next to it wearing a mask.

Tinpotspectator · 16/07/2021 23:19

Anyone who "kicks off" is a spoiled child. Awful behaviour.

That said, I agree people cough for various reasons, although covid is a very big one right now.

Mamanyt · 16/07/2021 23:30

I understand your concern, but by your standards, I could never again go in a restaurant. I have COPD and RAMPANT allergies. I cough a lot. I am also fully vaccinated. I would not mind in the least being asked to show my vaccination card, for the record. That, to me, would only mean that people are being careful.

So what do you want people with conditions like asthma to do? Stay at home like pariahs?
TinselTinsel · 17/07/2021 03:22

I have asthma, as does my 17 year old so we often cough but if you don't want us there then that;s fine by by me, I don't want to be around you either as you may asymptomatic.

Winwins · 17/07/2021 04:50

I can’t agree with banning people with a cough, but if I had a cough (as in a cough/cold, not asthma etc, confirmed as not covid), I think I would still avoid indoor settings. Someone else getting that cough could cause a whole load of inconvenience if they have to miss school/work etc. Its no big deal for me to wait a bit to go to indoor places until I’m better to prevent that.

I would grudgingly show my vaccine details to a restaurant manager but not some some stupid customer who thinks covid is the only reason people cough.
Crayfishforyou · 17/07/2021 08:44

Yabu
I have scarred lungs from covid and they often make me cough in sudden changes of temperature.

anon12345678901 · 17/07/2021 08:49

Did coughs not exist pre Covid? Could you not contemplate that there are other reasons for a cough than Covid?I went out for dinner with a cough, it was a few weeks after a chest infection and the doctor said it could linger for weeks, if someone had got annoyed with me I'd have told them where to shove it. YABU

Ifitquacks · 17/07/2021 08:56

Around this time last year I was told on here that I shouldn’t go out with my chronic cough at all, even outside, in case I had asymptomatic Covid and my chronic, non Covid was spreading it. I pointed out I had had the cough for 15 years so would that mean I could never go out of my house again? I was told not until Covid was eradicated.

tiredanddangerous · 17/07/2021 08:56

Your ignorance is bit astonishing to be honest op. I have asthma and hayfever but I quite like eating in restaurants.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/07/2021 09:07

I was told the same thing on her @Ifitquacks. If I'm being generous last year everything was unknown but this year it's just stupidity.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 17/07/2021 09:46

Aswith many others on here i have an allergy cough

It generally stops an hour or so after having my tablet (when I remember to take it)

But when we were first ‘let out’ i got myself into such a state thinking was my cough (which i had every day) a covid cough that morning and attempting to suppress it (if i was going to the shops or dentist etc) that i made it much worse and couldn’t stop painfully coughing for hours, really hurt my throat

I had to stop making morning appointments to see people 😀

Warsawa31 · 17/07/2021 09:48

Imagine this op - Someone has incurable lung cancer few months left to live and wants to enjoy a meal out with their family.

Get a grip for god sake

Angrymum22 · 17/07/2021 09:51

I take ACE inhibitors for hypertension which sometimes cause a low grade dry cough. You would never have noticed me pre covid. Damned if I’m going to avoid restaurants just because I have a persistent drug induced cough.
