People with coughs shouldn’t be allowed in restaurants?

AIBU to think people with continual coughs shouldn’t be allowed in a restaurant at the moment and to be annoyed a restaurant allowed someone with a very obvious cough dine there?

Oh do jog on there is love.

Chocolatericecakes · 15/07/2021 11:07

I have asthma. I cough. So sorry, I'll stay in in future. What was I thinking??!

DigitalGhost · 15/07/2021 11:23

My mum has severe asthma if she wasn't allowed anywhere because she had a cough she'd never leave the house.

wasthataburp · 15/07/2021 11:33

I think you sounds crazy even suggesting that.

thegreylady · 15/07/2021 11:40

I have been coughing most of my adult life. I have asthma, acid reflux and hay fever.
I am 77.

Inamuddleaboutthis · 15/07/2021 11:45

My 7 year old DD has asthma triggered by hayfever, despite antihistamines she coughs a lot at the moment.

Should I never take her to eat out? Or just lock her up all summer even though she's not contagious?

BashfulClam · 15/07/2021 11:49

I cough due to hayfever, get a grip!

badacorn · 15/07/2021 11:54

My mum has coughed her whole life thanks to cigarette smoke exposure as a child. People like my mum didn’t suddenly stop coughing when Covid emerged. There are so many reasons you can have a long term cough.

I bet you stared daggers at that other diner and spoiled their meal! Miserable.

Well it's not going to be a pleasant dining experience for either party surley?
I wouldn't go out to Eat in an enclosed restaurant with a cough?

People like you should feel free to leave every time I cough around you Grin

Radio4ordie · 15/07/2021 11:56

I have a child with severe asthma. We frequently end up getting PCRs to double check and do regular lateral flows. Sadly his asthma isn’t well controlled at the moment (hasn’t seen a consultant since pre pandemic which doesn’t help!). So YABU. Not every cough is a new and continuous one and not every cough is covid.
Banning people with a cough would disproportionately effect disabled and chronically ill people.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/07/2021 11:58

@Andrewsgirl

Bit of a difficult thing to establish though, whether it’s new or old cough !
Well no, they'll know if it's a new or old cough. In the same way they'll know if they've got a fever or lost their sense of taste and smell. Or of their kids are at home with Covid or if they were exposed to people with Covid yesterday. So basically in the same way we allow people to govern themselves over every other criteria for not being there, so too can we do the same for a dough.
babbaloushka · 15/07/2021 12:04

I have obstructive lung disease. If I don't cough, the fluid and mucus builds up in my lungs and requires hospitalisation. I'm sorry it's so inconvenient for you, but I have been vaccinated and will continue to cough in public. HTH.

romany4 · 15/07/2021 12:17

I cough with my hayfever as it gives me a tickly throat.

You are being ridiculous

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/07/2021 12:50

DS1 has cystic fibrosis and a permanent cough, I can have tracheitis for months at a time, which causes a constant cough. I mean, DS1's already trapped indoors, but it's nice to know that you think I should be too. Hmm

I feel sorry for you that you are so unkind that you find it unpleasant to be in the presence of people with underlying health conditions. Do you think that people with underlying health conditions find going out unpleasant? Possibly when there are people like this around but it certainly shouldn't stop them going out.

I once worked with a lady that also felt amputees were unpleasant to be around. It made her feel sick in restaurants. There are very unkind people in the World unfortunately.

Jayne35 · 16/07/2021 17:39

I cough with acid reflux, have done for years, sometimes quite badly. YABVU.

summerset · 16/07/2021 17:40

If it bothers you that much maybe you should be the one avoiding restaurants.

TheWitchOfShields · 16/07/2021 17:44

YABVVVU!

I have Gastro Reflux Disease which has damaged my oesophagus, and I cough because of the reflux of acid. Should I be kicked out of a restaurant or any public place. I test every other day for my job and would stay in if there was any chance I had covid symptoms or been around someone with it! You can't just start banning people from places!

SERIOUSLY???
I have a cough all year round due to allergies and asthma. So your saying I can never go out for a meal with friends and family?

Cough Cough I’m off

AgathaAllAlong · 16/07/2021 17:55

YABU. Official guidance is you might still have a cough even when you're no longer contagious, and that it's fine to go out so long as you've done your isolation. Do you want non contagious people who have had it to stay in isolation for weeks on end?

Bayleaf25 · 16/07/2021 17:59

Sorry YABU, my asthma and hay fever brings on annoying bouts of coughing at the moment. I feel fine, it’s not Covid, it’s just bloody annoying and has been going on for about 8 weeks now (phoned the GP yesterday but they’re not overly bothered).

OP whinges on here. Doubt if they actually raised the issue with the restaurant at the time, which I am sure could have been done discreetly away from the person with a cough. If it was that concerning, why not?

MidnightMonsterMunch · 16/07/2021 18:02

Yes, they should be imprisoned actually, or at least sent for re-education.
