Devastated by England losing

Footballsadness · 12/07/2021 18:41

I don't even like football. I was oblivious to the fact the Euros was even on until we reached the final. I literally know the names of about 2 players. And yet I stayed up to watch the game yesterday and have felt like crying ever since. I just feel so sad for the players. And so sad for Gareth Southgate given his history with penalties.

I just cannot shake off this horrible sadness. Am I menopausal? Harbouring undiagnosed depression? Who the fuck knows! I just don't understand why this game of football has affected me so much.

Anyone else feeling the same?

It's probably not about the football at all. Is everything else okay? Is it the last year or so taking its toll?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/07/2021 18:45

I've watched every single game I could and the further they progressed the more sure I was they'd win.
so yeah, still a bit upset.

but not as bad as DS2 and his mates (all 18 or just about to be) who fought back the tears. so more than anything I felt & feel for them. they were devastated yesterday.

it's ok to be sad. hugs

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/07/2021 18:47

I do feel sad for the players because they're such lovely lads. I've never thought that about previous England teams.

Amdone123 · 12/07/2021 18:50

I don't like football much either but got way too invested in this tournament.
I was upset this morning but I think that's because I feel for the players and I know my dh is upset.
I think I'm over it now. It's sport. Someone has to lose.

joystir59 · 12/07/2021 18:51

I feel really sad for the players but very proud of them also. Our England team is great and it's the world cup next year!

Unsoliciteddeckpic · 12/07/2021 18:54

I pressed yabu. Because I think you unreasonable to be that upset. But then as I pressed it I changed my mind.

Because its unlikely to be about the football. I am Irish, England getting so far was exciting.

After a shit year and a half, it was something happy and people were excited. I think winning this year, would have been amazing for the team. More so than any other Euro tournament.

I was really disappointed for them. I have spent the day in Scotland, with an English colleague and a group of Scots. There's been some gentle ribbing (going both ways) and some laughs, for me today. So it's cheered me up a bit.

Sorry I messed your vote up. I voted too quickly Flowers

SummerHouse · 12/07/2021 18:55

Not for everyone but I am thinking that the Italians would have been equally devastated. Someone had to lose.

Also very much taking the positives. They really did us proud.

I can't look at anything relating to those young chaps missing penalties. I just feel so sad for them. But they are amazing people and I hope they rise to the challenge of acceptance that it just didn't happen for them.

I think you can just press the other button and it switches your vote. I can anyway.

I'm not even an England supporter (Germany is my team!), but to see these wonderful lads and this really classy team get to the finals was very emotional and uplifting. I didn't really care whether they won or lost, though my heart absolutely sank at that last penalty... less because he missed and more because I wanted to throw my arms around that poor boy and hug him. Goddamn he had the weight of the world resting on his shoulders. I was really moved by how much love the team totally gave him in the end. England did so, so, so amazingly well. There is nothing to be sorry or sad about here. They got to the final for damn good reason and they should be proud. I sure am! Gareth Southgate is a class act and he led a dynamite team. Onwards and upwards. They should be so proud!

Dry your eyes, OP. Next stop: World Cup!

MadMadMadamMim · 12/07/2021 18:57

I watched all of the games - have been a football supporter for most of my (long) life. They did really well and got further than I thought they would, and yes, I watched with resigned disappointment as they lost on penalties. This felt like such deja vu from the last 40 years of watching England matches!

I'm sorry for DS (16) who is genuinely so, so sad today. He came home fighting back tears last night and today said I feel like England will probably never win a major tournament in my lifetime.

It's difficult not to inwardly smile at this gloom from a teenage boy - I felt like saying Oh sweetie - I've been watching England play since the 1970s. It doesn't really get much better than last night!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/07/2021 18:58

It must be a symptom of something else, surely? You can’t be that devastated about the football if you don’t follow it and weren’t even following this competition.

I can understand feeling bad for the players - and I’m absolutely furious about the racist tweets some have received- but in terms of not winning, each and every team would have felt the same way!

TiddyAndFletch · 12/07/2021 19:00

Could your brain be using this as a filter for sadness at something else in your life - or something in your past you haven't processed?

LuxOlente · 12/07/2021 19:01

If you don't even follow football and are actually crying, I'd say this was indicative of a greater crisis.

GirlAloud · 12/07/2021 19:01

Watch more England games. You’ll get used to the cycle of hope - optimism - false dawns - crushing disappointment.

It’s normal. As the song says :

‘All those oh-so-nears
Wear you down
Through the years’

Youdiditanyway · 12/07/2021 19:01

I feel for the players and Southgate but devastated is a bit farfetched.

Kljnmw3459 · 12/07/2021 19:04

Yes it was sad. But world cup finals next! This was a good practice round for them and they'll be even better prepared for the world cup final!!!!

Needapoodle · 12/07/2021 19:05

I've been very upset today over the way those three young guys have been treated.

transformandriseup · 12/07/2021 19:07

It seems so sad as they were so close to winning after many years of poor results. However England getting to the final (and the semi final of the World Cup) is something to celebrate and something I never thought we would see.

Moonface123 · 12/07/2021 19:07

Everyone is taking it so seriously, nobody died.
I am not a follower of football but l think they did well to get as far as they did, why can't that be enough ?
Lighten up, there's always next time.

DrDresaid · 12/07/2021 19:08

I've been a football fan all my life. You get used to this kind of disappointment! Last night/today was just like every other two years!

MrsJackGrealish · 12/07/2021 19:08

I'm gutted, but gutted for Gareth and the lads.

They've been a joy to watch and I look forward to next year.

They've actually reignited my interest in football.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 12/07/2021 19:08

It's amazing to get this far! Still don't understand why Saka was chosen..read he never taken a penalty and so many others who should've gone before..
but after the last set of Euros to get to final a huge step!!! Think world cup be different but shall see! Either way...onwards and all

redcarbluecar · 12/07/2021 19:10

I've gone for YABU because of 'Gareth Southgate and his history of penalties'. He missed ONE penalty ONCE (25 years ago!) - as do many players - and the nature of the horrible shoot out scenario is that 'blame' falls on individuals. Saka will forever be associated with his missed penalty, which was simply saved by a very good keeper who went the right way.
I know this wasn't quite what you were saying and of course YANBU to feel upset.

Okbye · 12/07/2021 19:11

I understand OP! I think it’s also because this tournament was a shining light in what’s truly been a shower of shit 18 months.

It brought everyone together and gave us all something I common. Plus it had everyone talking about something not related to Covid which was very much welcomed!
I’m sad it’s all over too 😔

But hey, World Cup next year and I think most of us will have everything crossed for our lads! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️🦁🦁🦁

sociallydistained · 12/07/2021 19:11

I feel similar although I watched al the England games (but never usually interested, I feel so gutted for those young lads last night and even more so today after the abuse. All that pressure. It breaks my heart!
