Questions for white people: what is the problem with "taking the knee"

Flayn · 12/07/2021 17:39

  1. What is the problem with taking the knee
  2. How would you prefer athletes protest racism

I am a regular poster, under a changed name and speak 2nd language English - I know the passive aggressiveness some posters adopt for this topic.

piggy was pushed

"Amused by someone using the right wing Spectator as solid evidence!"

Glad I made you chuckle. Smile

So anything that is 'right wing' is to be dismissed as BS - now there's prejudice for you !

TedMullins · 13/07/2021 09:01

@Lweji yes, I agree the tories have said and done overtly racist things and Johnson’s previous slurs laughed off and dismissed. I was referring to people saying ‘keep politics out of football’ though - what is so political or indeed anger inducing for these people about a team making a gesture that says ‘we’re anti racist’? It’s just mind boggling that people would rather tie themselves in knots to claim racism isn’t a problem in the UK or ‘it’s not as bad as America so it’s fine’ than just admit racism is a problem, it’s bad, and everyone needs to be actively anti racist. Same goes for those who say ‘I don’t like what BLM stands for’. An organisation that opposes capitalism - a system which is screwing us all over - is somehow worse in their minds than actual racism? Seems a pretty racist hill to die on!

  1. Nothing. What’s wrong with not taking the knee?
  2. Racism is a crime. Those guilty of should be charged.

we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, ... during the anthem, as a peaceful protest," said Reid. "We chose to kneel because it's a respectful gesture. I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy

Eric Todd Reid Jr.

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/07/2021 09:07

Mixed race family here.

We wouldn't take the knee. Its too woke and too wrapped up in BLM and George Floyd regardless of how it started. Its absolutely meaningless now.

We would much rather more serious efforts were put into education and accountability on both an individual and collective/corporate level. The PM would be a good place to start.

@chaosrabbitland So you saw some 'article' that you surmise that Meghan wrote herself and put her ethnicity as caucasian, herself?

Are you serious?

Is this honestly the standard of discussion now? Someone saw a website that listed Meghan as caucasian and you assume she wrote it?

Agreed ..I'm not saying your racist @SourAppleChew by saying shouldn't have to educate on how to be anthracist!

But so many on here determined to give basic excuses then argue and divert.

It is a popular tactic I've fallen for it.

Equality isn't a competition...the whataboutery on this threadHmm !

i saw the picture of the listing with her photo in it , it obviously wasnt just a written article claiming it , i saw the picture of her with her listing herself as white , but im guessing since its her , everything bad written about her is a racist lie right ?

It's OK for athletes and younger people but discriminatory to those who are older or less flexible. My father had to call for help to get back up again.
Standing with head bowed is more inclusive.

Yes, the hatred of Meghan is off the charts, and it seems to be the same type of people who support racism, basically proving that the hatred of her is about racism.
Shelddd · 13/07/2021 09:22

Nothing wrong with taking a knee but doing so during a national anthem is protesting against that country and national identity. Basically saying it's not okay to identify with that national identity. Its quite a bigoted act.

But nothing is wrong with it, people should be allowed to speak whatever they like, but it's just the irony of protesting bigotry with more bigotry.
