To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

Never wash

Dixiechickonhols · 12/07/2021 18:15

So rude. I never wash strawberries. You minded her child at short notice for free and fed her child a healthy snack. The only message from her should have been thank you.

FleasAndKeef · 12/07/2021 18:17

Strawberries and other soft fruits have a high pesticide use in growing (unless organic) so I always wash them. However, I wouldn't have said anything if it was a one off

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2021 18:17

@Taliskerskye

Just rinse them under running water. Its not difficult and could prevent serious illness so its a no brainer really.

Honestly the ignorance on this thread is staggering. I bet half the replies mocking washing them wouldnt dream of eating raw chicken etc.. there's literally no difference - ecoli kills Hmm

ElephantOfRisk · 12/07/2021 18:17

Well, in general I wash fruit, but then I also wouldn't bat an eyelid at my DC eating wild brambles so I don't think i'd have said anything and certainly wouldn't be expecting imminent death from unwashed strawberry. Maybe next time give her a bag of sweets instead of a healthy snack...

quizqueen · 12/07/2021 18:17

I have never washed fruit. No one in my family has ever been ill from eating washed fruit. I would tell her that and also that she needs to send all snacks if you childmind again.

worktrip · 12/07/2021 18:18

You should always wash soft fruit, but it is unlikely to do much harm.

worktrip · 12/07/2021 18:18

She was rude to say anything though

GreenCrayon · 12/07/2021 18:19

It really doesn't though. Washing a strawberry under cold water will not kill ecoli.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2021 18:20

@GreenCrayon

It's in the soil so washing them will vastly reduce the risk. Google it. I'm not trying to be pedantic - I lost someone I loved dearly to this. It's scary the amount of parents who seem blissfully unaware .

MarsandPluto · 12/07/2021 18:20

@WaltzingBetty All the same, I still wash as advised on the box regardless of their reasons .

Yes, there is literally no difference between a strawberry and raw chicken 😂😂

That’s won my ‘post of the day’

Three0fivepointfour · 12/07/2021 18:22

Tell her you had no where to wash them so you licked each one clean before giving them to her daughter.

MarsandPluto · 12/07/2021 18:23

And yes, I wash raspberries and Grapes too, but not fruit that is eaten peeled (before anyone asks)

Dutchesss · 12/07/2021 18:23

Grin I know which I'd rather!

SlothinSpirit · 12/07/2021 18:23

If you do babysit her child again for any reason, ask her to provide snacks and meals.

EssentialHummus · 12/07/2021 18:24

It’s been a long time since I wanted the subject of a thread to read it as much as this one.

In any event - no, I wouldn’t reply, though I’d be biting my tongue not to say “Soz, but we’d eaten the last of the Haribo/Maccy D’s so it was just the strawbs left hun xoxo”.

And next time the neighbour needs help with her darling I’d be conveniently unavailable/let her know that I’d taken DS for a ride in a car without a seatbelt / walk through a local firing range / unsupervised swim and would Kate like to join?”

TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 18:25

ZI bet half the replies mocking washing them wouldnt dream of eating raw chicken etc.. there's literally no difference

This is so stupid I can’t even …

whynotwhatknot · 12/07/2021 18:25

Just say of course but no need to worry i wont be watching your child again

TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 18:25

Bold fail

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2021 18:25

@SW1amp

Clearly I meant in regard to the ability to kill and cause serious illness but go ahead and flag up your ignorance.

Im sorry you lost someone to this but it's scaremongering to compare it to being on the same level as eating raw chicken.

Walkaround · 12/07/2021 18:25

Yes you should have washed them first, but no she should not have got her knickers in a twist about it - it’s an exceptionally low chance her dd will actually get ill, unless she has a compromised immune system.
Fwiw, I once found an empty foil Lomotil tablet container at the bottom of a pack of grapes I bought in Sainsbury’s. The thought the person picking or packing them might have had a bad case of diarrhoea while at work that they were self-medicating for was enough to ensure I always wash grapes extremely carefully!!!

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 12/07/2021 18:26

Somewhere else on mumsnet the neighbour has probably posted about the friend who fed her child unwashed strawberries, and people have clamoured to write the "suitably assertive, polite yet snarky text" that mumsnetters love to compose.

I'd love to see two concurrent threads running like that. People would tie themselves in knots.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/07/2021 18:26

I nwver washed the fruit. Picked it up in garden ir shops and in it went.

She was patronising. I would tell her that's not on.

Also. Lol at raw chicken and strawberries comparison😂
