To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

Also pesticides - one of the highest pesticide residue in uk is strawbs wickedleeks.riverford.co.uk/news/health-farming/strawberries-top-dirty-dozen-pesticide-list

IVflytrap · 12/07/2021 17:27

Just reply "don't worry, there won't be a next time :)" and leave her to figure it out.

Frenchfancy · 12/07/2021 17:27

Washing strawberries is a waste of time. They have no skin so washing just helps any germs to go into the strawberry.

When I was pregnant my Dr banned me from eating Strawberries for this reason because they can carry toxoplasmosis (French Dr - was fine with pâté and soft cheese though)

NewmummyJ · 12/07/2021 17:27

If you were willing to babysit my child then you can feed him unwashed strawberries (and unwashed earthworms)! I'd be so grateful for the favour I wouldn't mention it- even if it did bother me, which in likelihood it wouldn't!

Nohomemadecandles · 12/07/2021 17:28

Would you really want that? Would you? Grin

Nutcase. Don't babysit again.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 12/07/2021 17:28

The 'would you really want that?' is most peculiar

Hidehi4 · 12/07/2021 17:28

Just text her back there won’t be a next time.

MissMaple82 · 12/07/2021 17:28

They get washed at packing! She's crazy. Nothing bad is ever going ti happen! Steer clear of folk this demented

Crockof · 12/07/2021 17:30

Was happy to help you out with Kate. Please can I ask though, that there is no "next time"? I might do something dangerous, like make the same risk-assessment I do for my own child, & they could become so unwell! Would YOU really want that?

Please send that

Xmassprout · 12/07/2021 17:30

I do prefer fruit to be washed first, and I don't think she was unreasonable to say that.

However she was completely unreasonable with end of the message.

I don't think I would reply either. Or if I did, it would be something along the lines of 'no I wouldn't want that, so you'll have to find someone else next time you're in a pickle'

ChargingBuck · 12/07/2021 17:31

@Foxhasbigsocks

I wouldn’t have said anything to you but yabu. All fruit and veg should be washed or peeled before eating. Your kid your rules, but I would be cross if a friend did this with my kids
I'm guessing you are not of a scientific background.

People can't scrub soft fruit clean, or peel strawberries.
Do you seriously imagine that a rinse under a tap removes the type of germs that make someone unwell, like e-Coli for example?

Just eat the damn strawberries.
They'll make you unwell, or not, whether you wash them, or not.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 12/07/2021 17:31

I do rinse strawberries before the kids eat them.

I would never have said anything to you, though!

TableSetting · 12/07/2021 17:31

I’m in the ‘unwashed strawbs’ camp too.

BlueJag · 12/07/2021 17:31

I wouldn't have said anything specially if someone has done me a favour.
I think it's gross not to wash fruit but that's not the point.
Cheeky neighbour.

brilliantdances · 12/07/2021 17:32

Well I can't see what plain old water is really doing anyway, surely it's just water so can't be taking off that much?

Anyway, Kate is 6. She's a lovely girl, she didn't grass me up Grin she was just excited to share that she'd eaten strawberries in the car with DS

Anyone else read the other mum's text in Catherine Tate's middle class mum voice?!

Don't panic darling, but the strawberries aren't washed 🤣

Someone made a similar comment upthread, made me snort with laughter lol

Washing soft fruit in water won't achieve anything other than making it wet. YANBU

Celticdawn5 · 12/07/2021 17:33

I don’t wash any soft fruit either

LaLaMelyn · 12/07/2021 17:33

But washing soft fruit in a bit of water won't remove e coli or pesticides anyway Confused

She's batshit, and rude.

MissMogwai · 12/07/2021 17:34

Ah sorry didn't see the other comment!

I also wouldn't wash the strawberries for what it's worth! 🍓

Comedycook · 12/07/2021 17:35

I wash them in water and vinegar

brilliantdances · 12/07/2021 17:35

I do wash them at home but that's because I cut their ends off and wash off all the green bits left hanging on

Think I wash most fruits out of habit except for bananas, passion fruits and coconut

OP posts:
TwoLeftElbows · 12/07/2021 17:36

I do rinse them usually but I'm pretty sure germs have evolved to survive a quick dunk in a bit of cold water.

Popcornbetty · 12/07/2021 17:36

I wash strawberries as i do with apples, potatoes and lots of other fruit and vegetables. I wouldn't however complain if somebody else didn't! You were decent enough to look after her child and buy her child strawberries (a nice healthy snack) she should be thanking you and not complaining! I wouldn't look after the child again.
