To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

But I think she is being cheeky to send you that message. You are not a childcare provider and so if she is not happy with how you have looked after her child she should just not rely on you for childcare in future.

bonbonours · 12/07/2021 18:08

Another one here who never washes strawberries or any other fruit unless I picked it in the garden and it literally has mud on it. The idea that a quick rinse in cold water will wash away pesticides is ridiculous. "They can be so dangerous"???? What exactly is the danger here?

Sparechange · 12/07/2021 18:08

@WaltzingBetty

Do the washers also wash raspberries/grapes etc?

Remarkable isn't it how so many of us have survived without homeopathic doses of vinegar on our soft fruits

😂😂😂

The same people who were diligently washing their tins of tomatoes and sealed bags of pasta in their supermarket deliveries during the first lockdown

Delicatesubjectsadly · 12/07/2021 18:08

I’d reply
“Don’t worry, I blew the dead flies off first”

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 12/07/2021 18:09

Four adults in our house and I always wash strawberries. You mean I needn't bother?

saleorbouy · 12/07/2021 18:09

Never washed a strawberry in my life. What "nasties" is a quick sprinkle under the tap going to remove?
Root veg like spuds and carrots ok, as they grow in the soil. Oh how did our ancestors every manage eating produce straight from the bush?

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2021 18:10

It's not the pesticides its ecoli

Please google.

And of course manure but if people are happy to eat shit....

Fivemoreminutes1 · 12/07/2021 18:10

I think she’ll soon learn her lesson when she needs your childcare again in the future but you politely say you’re busy!

MarsandPluto · 12/07/2021 18:10

Quite

Taliskerskye · 12/07/2021 18:10

No wonder we are fucked as a species.
Dettol will be the death of humankind

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/07/2021 18:10

I don’t usually wash them - my Mum does and I’m sure I should but it always feels unnecessary…

She’s so rude though! And assuming a “next time” Angry

That conversation you've written reminds me Katherine Tate, the posh mummy sketch

^^
I was just thinking thjs!

Taliskerskye · 12/07/2021 18:10

@Willyoujustbequiet
How do you get rid of E. coli
Cold water for 5 seconds???????????????

WorriedMillie · 12/07/2021 18:11

Dangerous 😂😂😂

I wash strawberries when at home, but when we buy them out and about, we eat them out of the punnet.

The text was rude, I wouldn’t be offering to have the child again.

GreenCrayon · 12/07/2021 18:11

Ecoli is not going to be removed by cold water and a bit of vinegar... Confused
MarsandPluto · 12/07/2021 18:11

@Taliskerskye Quite

Coachradley · 12/07/2021 18:11

I rarely wash them. I did see a video ages ago where this person left some strawberries in water for a bit. Loads of bugs and dirt came out which was surprising. But it doesn’t stop me from eating unwashed strawberries.

Even if the mum washes her fruit, surely a one off wouldn’t hurt. You’re doing her a favour. I shocked about the comment that you wouldn’t want her to be unwell. She’d get a very angry reply from me.

FiveGs · 12/07/2021 18:11

Yeah.... there won't be a next time!

No good deed OP.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 12/07/2021 18:12

Text back “ Sorry about the strawberries. But “ would I want that”? How patronising.”

I am very firm about telling people why they have upset me rather than sulking quietly or making excuses. Let her apologise for being rude.

WaltzingBetty · 12/07/2021 18:12

@MarsandPluto

Sorry, haven't read the full thread, but I am sure the label on the box says "Wash before use". I always wash them as strawberries(and other fruits and vegitables" could have pesticides, dust etc. Obviously washing doesn't guarantee complete annihilation of potential pathogens but at least I try to limit as much as possible. There must be a reason why it says "wash before use " on the box.
So you don't accidentally crunch a bit of grit.

Certainly a rinse under the tap will achieve that objective.

Pathogen and pesticide elimination however is rather unrealistic

soooooooG · 12/07/2021 18:12

God she should see what my kids eat...

grapewine · 12/07/2021 18:12

Do the washers also wash raspberries/grapes etc?

Yes. Mum did, so I do. And apples. I never really thought about it.

slashlover · 12/07/2021 18:12

My grandfather used to grow strawberries and we'd eat them straight off the plant, we also ate brambles from hedgerows and rhubarb from our garden (with a small cone of sugar!).

singleagain22 · 12/07/2021 18:13

Had a box of strawberries at lunch today,
Unwashed.
I would probably lie and say they were pre-washed unless her dc saw you buy them!!!

AlmostSummer21 · 12/07/2021 18:14

@Tossblanket

lol

My 18 month old son only today was picking our strawberries and eating them direct from plant.

She obviously wanting to raise one of those kids that's always poorly and allergic to everything 😂

Yes, but that's entirely different to strawberries covered in pesticides and handled by several people, people who may not have a fabulous level of personal hygiene (toilet related).

@brilliantdances.

I have seen fruit sprayed and seen it picked, I picked strawberries myself once (literally once-as a second job it was a complete 'no go' for me!!). But I don't know what the answer is, as rinsing them in water does f'all, and I don't want to soak them in miltons! I'm currently pretending they have been grown, picked & packed by immaculately clean robots! No pesticide in sight!!

That aside.

Your neighbour is incredibly rude! She needed childcare, her DD clearly enjoyed her day and to make a fuss over strawberries not being washed was bad enough, but her comment about it being dangerous and you not wanting that' definitely tips it into fucking rude

I would have the DD again, but when my DS wanted to play eith her, not when she needed childcare!

Is there anything she gives/lets her DD do that you consider dangerous/bad parenting??

Marmite27 · 12/07/2021 18:14

I never was fruit. I’d be reluctant to look after her dc again if that was her attitude.
