To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

I was quite laid back about not washing fruit or veg until a friends dd nearly died from unwashed lettuce.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/07/2021 17:55

Yabu

There is e.coli is soil. It can kill. I've known healthy people who have died from it.

To all those replies saying its done them no harm please educate yourselves. There's a lot of stuff that we did in the past that we know better to then do now. This is one. E-coli kills.

Standrewsschool · 12/07/2021 17:55

I would normally wash them, but wouldn’t fret if they were unwashed.

Snowdropsonkittens · 12/07/2021 17:55

I have also never washed fruit or vegetables unless there is visible ground on it.

grapewine · 12/07/2021 17:55

I do wash them, but she's being PA with "would you really want that?" I'd reply "Noted" and just don't look after the kid ever again. Noot worth the hassle.

Theunamedcat · 12/07/2021 17:55

As my dd would say

Bold of you to assume there will be a next time

Comedycook · 12/07/2021 17:56

@WaltzingBetty

To all the strawberry washers on the thread - could you talk me through the process?

I'm interested in how you ensure absolute annihilation of potential pathogens.
Thanks

@WaltzingBetty

Change the word strawberry to hands. If clothes or plates or mugs! Why wash anything?!

KarmaViolet · 12/07/2021 17:56

@SW1amp

Wtf is ‘dangerous’ about strawberries but can be neutralised with a quick spritz of tap water.?!

But then I didn’t know the level of germ paranoia existed until I read the thread on here about people who won’t wash underwear in the same wash as tea towels because they are worried about poo particles ending up on cutlery 😂😂

......wait, what? Grin

Tell her it was Haribos! A whole bag of 25 mini packs all to herself. #Only Here for Thread Entertainment

That should read

Oh I love this. The perfect response. Short and straight for the jugular.
seensome · 12/07/2021 17:57

I do rinse strawberries only because I'm paranoid I'll eat a small insect with it, I'm sure eating them without washing isn't going to do much harm.
Yanbu not to reply, just try and be polite still when you see her for the sake of being neighbours, I don't like that she assumes you will childmind for her again.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 12/07/2021 17:57

I always wish my fruit and veggies ever since my sister worked on a packaging assembly line one summer...also the Ecoli outbreak from cucumbers which killed lots of people in Spain.

That said I’d be so very grateful if someone looked after my child that it wouldn’t occur to me to be concerned that they’d eaten some unwashed fruit which although a risk is still a small one.

Maybe she’s got some kind of food anxiety who knows. Nevertheless, don’t rush to help her again.

WaltzingBetty · 12/07/2021 17:57

@brilliantdances

I'd be tempted to respond with 'I'd want that as much as I'd want my own child to be unwell, since I treat them both the same. However my parenting choices obviously don't meet with your approval so you'd probably feel more comfortable if I didn't host your child again'

Allington · 12/07/2021 17:57

'We don't wash strawberries before eating. Sometimes other fruit as well! Best not to ask us for child care in future as can't guarantee to meet your requirements '

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/07/2021 17:58

I wash my hands, clothes, plates and mugs in hot, soapy water.

Is... that how you wash strawberries??

thisplaceisweird · 12/07/2021 17:58

"don't worry, there probably won't be a next time :)" would be my response

want2bemum · 12/07/2021 17:58

I don't wash strawberries and have never got ill from it (that I know of). But I know some people who do wash all of their fruit and veg and feel very strongly about this.

So I guess I can understand both sides. I would just say oh, sorry, we don't normally wash them but will in future if your child is with us.

I wash strawberries in a bowl of cold water and vinegar

I wash my hands for about 20 seconds with soap, or failing that they get a thorough rub with anti-bac. Plates and mugs go through the dishwasher, and clothes go through the washing machine with a good slug of Dettol laundry cleanser.

Strawberries I rinse in clean tap water on the rare occasions I wash them at all. I wouldn't rinse off my hands, clothes, plates or mugs in the same way because it would do fuck all.

me4real · 12/07/2021 18:00

I did wash some I picked on the allotment the other day, as they seemed quite dirty. But I don't usually.

I just swooshed them around with water in a bowl.

BountyIsUnderrated · 12/07/2021 18:00

I'm pretty sure it says wash before eating on them because of pesticides.

cardoon · 12/07/2021 18:00

Do you strawberry washers wash raspberries too?

ahoyshipmates · 12/07/2021 18:01

Attack of the Killer Strawberries!

In what way are they dangerous if not washed properly, I wonder?

WaltzingBetty · 12/07/2021 18:02

@Comedycook

Do you genuinely believe that cold water and vinegar removes all pesticides and kills all pathogens?
