To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

They seem to go mouldy if you wash them.

And you wouldn’t want that.

Cloudninenine · 12/07/2021 17:47

She doesn’t sound like she told you in a rude way

If she said ‘would you really want that’ it was bloody rude.

percheron67 · 12/07/2021 17:47

I always wash fruit and vegetables before eating. Silly not to. Not sure that I would have contacted another Ma about this, though

Etinox · 12/07/2021 17:47

@brilliantdances

I should reply back that her DC was mistaken and it was a pack of Haribo strawbs she had
I please do this!! A big pack
2018SoFarSoGreat · 12/07/2021 17:48

I wouldn't eat them, nor feed them to anyone, but each to their own. I certainly did as an early teen (right off the bushes!) but now, knowing how much pesticide and risk of e-coli there is, nothing gets eaten unwashed here. Not just pain water either; DH buys (and uses) some fancy fruit and veg wash. I eat them once he cleans them.

My lovely DIL has no such qualms. DGSS's are just fine, stomachs of steel so far, so no harm no foul!

ChocolateRiver · 12/07/2021 17:48

I’ve just let dd take a strawberry straight from the box. Sure she’ll be fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maryann1975 · 12/07/2021 17:49

Are you meant to wash strawberries? I’ve managed to raise three dc to at least age 10 and I have never washed a strawberry.

Those of you who wash them, what do you use? Surely just water won’t kill any germs and if you wash them with any kind of soap, it would taint the flavour of the fruit? Yuk!

TheGumption · 12/07/2021 17:50

"No problem! Next time find some other poor fucker to have her 😊"

Popcornbetty · 12/07/2021 17:50

Haha on the strawbs...await incoming lecture on sugar and artificial nastiesShock
I would reply with:

'Yes i normally wash them too but unfortunately my car doesn't have the appropriate facitilty. Seeing as how it was a one off quick healthy snack i think Kate will be just fine. Your dd was hungry and enjoyed the strawberries considering she had no snacks with her.

bananaboats · 12/07/2021 17:50

I never wash fruit and have never been ill, although tempting to reply I would probably just ignore and not offer any childcare again

Pinnerbrat · 12/07/2021 17:50

No need to wash them... but that's not really the issue. Her tone is so rude. Id be inclined to say 'We don't tend to worry about washing fruit. You may and that's fine, but your message is rather rude...' and then give her a wide berth. Idiotic.

warmfluffytowels · 12/07/2021 17:50

I used to pick strawberries off the plant as a kid and eat them whole.

I'm surprised I'm not dead Grin

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 12/07/2021 17:50

'I can assure you that it won't ever happen again'.

Because like fuck am I ever going to do you another favour

0None0 · 12/07/2021 17:51

YABU. How can you possibly personally guarantee that the strawberry picker didn’t have diorhea, and had washed their hands since they had last been to the toilet.

I know several fruit pickers. Always wash your fruit and veg

georgarina · 12/07/2021 17:51

I would wash strawberries (or any fruit/vegetable) before eating.

But the parent's tone is ridiculously rude and OTT! 'So unwell'? 'Would you really want that?'

What does she imagine would happen - her daughter's going to keel over from an unwashed piece of fruit?

0None0 · 12/07/2021 17:51

What, you have never been ill ever in your life??
Blossomtoes · 12/07/2021 17:52

Rude, rude, rude. So that’s one of her ad hoc childcare options gone. If she’s as rude as that to everyone she’s not going to have any left.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 12/07/2021 17:52

Fruit should always be washed, even more so given the current times where people shouldn’t be sharing food and ensuring clean washed hands etc before eating.

DahliaMacNamara · 12/07/2021 17:52

I always wash mine, but ILs think it's extremely pernickety of me, and God knows they don't think that of me very often. Never entered my head to stipulate future rinsing as a condition of allowing them the privilege of looking after my DC.

WaltzingBetty · 12/07/2021 17:52

To all the strawberry washers on the thread - could you talk me through the process?

I'm interested in how you ensure absolute annihilation of potential pathogens.
Thanks

Lemonmelonsun · 12/07/2021 17:53

What a rude and aggressive message I can't believe how rude people are!

I love the earlier response someone created.. You wouldn't want to that would you 😂😂🤣🤣. Unbelievable, it beggars belief and yes of do wash all fruit and strawberry and put apple cider vinegar on them as well

GreenCrayon · 12/07/2021 17:53

Im struggling to see if this is tongue in cheek or not but on the off chance it isn't then splashing them about in a bit of water is going to do fuck all...

CandyLeBonBon · 12/07/2021 17:53

Haha when I was little, going strawberry picking with my nan, it was one fir me and one for the punnet. I've been ill from many things in my life: flu, poorly reheated Chinese takeaway (I know!) alcohol, but NEVER unwashed strawberries. I'm 52 in a week. Kate will be just fine. Her mum is a prize dick!

SW1amp · 12/07/2021 17:53

Wtf is ‘dangerous’ about strawberries but can be neutralised with a quick spritz of tap water.?!

But then I didn’t know the level of germ paranoia existed until I read the thread on here about people who won’t wash underwear in the same wash as tea towels because they are worried about poo particles ending up on cutlery 😂😂

Me too I'm completely flummoxed...
