To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

I've just this minute finished a nice bowl of strawberries. No way would I eat them unwashed - that’s just wrong

Secret of my washing technique? Wash them with a very unhealthy drop of cream

wjg65ka · 12/07/2021 19:14

The "would you really want that?" Was unnecessary.

babynameneeded · 12/07/2021 19:15

@BillieSpain

Lots and lots out of billions of people is not really lots

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 12/07/2021 19:15

I don’t know why the non washers are becoming so exercised about this to the point of attacking people who’ve come on to state that they have become very ill after eating unwashed F and V. One poor poster has come on to say her brother died like this and many attacked her rather than giving her sympathy Flowers. But then again this is the nation who had to be given demonstrations by their Prime Minister on how to wash their hands last year and many boast of never washing their hands after doing a piss so I don’t know why I’m surprised.

Anyway its not just pesticides, even fruit grown in your own garden may be sprayed with rats piss or bird shit flecks. There is evidence and advice by medical bodies that it’s best to wash your fruit and veg.

MojoJojo71 · 12/07/2021 19:16

The cheek!

I’d reply ‘Next time find someone else to look after your child’

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/07/2021 19:16

@Comedycook

I wash them in water and vinegar
🤣

Yum yum

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:16

The nhs website says that washing fruit and veg will help remove bacteria including e coli from the surface

Well yes, that's manual removal for you. I'm not saying washing fruit and veg isn't a good idea. I'm wondering if there is good quality evidence to prove that soaking strawberries in vinegar and water is effective against E coli.

Igneococcus · 12/07/2021 19:17

Any pathogen that can survive passage through the stomach is going to be killed by five minutes in some diluted vinegar.

Igneococcus · 12/07/2021 19:18

Is not going to be killed by vinegar, I mean of course

Well it's going to be more effective than doing nothing
Menora · 12/07/2021 19:18

I am terrible for never washing anything. It horrifies my mother. Thankfully she rarely comes for food
I really can’t stand soggy wet dripping fruit and veg, if you spin it they mush and if you paper dry rhem they just stick to the paper 😂

Spanielstail · 12/07/2021 19:19

I wouldn't eat unwashed fruit and veg even if it was organic as they are sprayed with chemicals that you really don't want to eat in large quantities.

Strawberries are on the dirty dozen list as some of the most toxic fruit for pesticides.

Only way we do eat as go is if they come off our own strawberry plants in the garden.

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:19

But then again this is the nation who had to be given demonstrations by their Prime Minister on how to wash their hands

The same Prime Minister who shook hands with Covid patients and got covid himself? Yeah, he's a great ambassador for basic hygiene Grin

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 12/07/2021 19:20

@IAmAWomanNotACis

Would that be a google of quality scientific papers, or just searching for somebody who agrees with you on a random website that isn't run by a scientist?
I haven’t checked the credentials, I made it clear that they “seem” evidence based. I came to it with an open mind. But actually I have seen zero results saying don’t bother, water doesn’t remove pesticides.
warmfluffytowels · 12/07/2021 19:20

@Comedycook

I've never bought spinach, cabbage or leeks that haven't been washed and cleaned already

I bought spinach that was meant to have been pre washed but I could taste soil and grit. I was so unwell

But anyone can get sick from anything.

You don't know that washing it would have not made you sick.

BillieSpain · 12/07/2021 19:20

I live in Spain and we eat fruit and veg all the time, often not from supermarkets so I probably shouldn't comment.

But you should wash fruit and beg, honestly, you should.

But this woman sound like a cheeky fucker!

When I was pregant(In England, 13 years ago) I was told to ALWAYS wash bagged salad, even if pre washed.

Anyway, you do you.

TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 19:22

Well it's going to be more effective than doing nothing

Not necessarily

But if it makes you feel better …

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:22

This is my strong suspicion.

Ph of stomach acid: 1.5-3.5

Ph of vinegar (BEFORE dilution in water) 2-3

Ph of tap water: 7.5 ish

NatSam89 · 12/07/2021 19:23

You might want to google toxyplasmosis!

Yes, the defensiveness is odd. I was completely prepared to be shown evidence that what I’ve always done out of habit is pointless but it seems to be doing something, so I will carry on!

(incidentally I have had to patiently explain to my parents many times why washing raw chicken in the sink is a bad idea but they won’t be told - see I do understand recommendations!)

Sadsiblingatsea · 12/07/2021 19:24

What an awful, hysterical and unpleasant woman. Stay well clear and remember, no good deed goes unpunished!

MorganKitten · 12/07/2021 19:25

They have small worms in them that come out when washed so yep I wash them now, the video I saw put me off.

Comedycook · 12/07/2021 19:26

You don't know that washing it would have not made you sick

@warmfluffytowels

I don't know that, that's true, but washing it wouldn't have have harmed me and could potentially have prevented illness. There's nothing to lose by washing it. I could taste soil...soil can make you ill. Washing the soil off can only be a good thing

Igneococcus · 12/07/2021 19:28

I did some rough calculation of the pH IAmAWomanNotACis and depending how dilute the vinegar is you probably get to about pH 4.5, higher more likely, depends on the vinegar as well.
Any self-respecting microbes can cope with that for a few minutes. E. coli can stay viable at pH 4 for several hours, would need to look up how long.

purplecorkheart · 12/07/2021 19:30

I do wash or peel any fruit or veg that I eat raw. I know the US has massively different regulations when it comes to food standard than here (Ireland in my case) but some of the case studies in medical journals make me take the time. Admittedly lettuce seems to be the biggest issue I have read about.
