To have fed her DC unwashed strawberries?

Neighbour will probably see this. Not sure I care. Perhaps she will see how silly she is!

She was desperate for someone to have her DD and I said I would, no worries, all fine.

Her DD shared a box of strawberries with DS today and long story short, she's picked her DC and her DC has told her this.

I have received a text saying ''Hi, thanks again for having Kate. Please can I ask though, next time wash the strawberries before giving them to her? They are dangerous if not washed properly and she could become so unwell. Would you really want that?''

I haven't replied and won't be. AIBU to have not washed them?! Would if I was at home but it was actually just a quick snack shared out

evidencebasedliving.human.cornell.edu/2015/05/15/can-you-wash-pesticides-off-your-fruits-and-vegetables/

Quite a few pages out there that seem evidence based that say yes, using just running water does reduce the pesticide residue

olidora63 · 12/07/2021 19:06

It has absolutely never crossed my mind to wash any fruit!! My 18 month old GC has a punnet of raspberries every time she stays for the weekend…,absolutely fine!

ElephantOfRisk · 12/07/2021 19:07

I wash apples with soap but accept that that might be weird. I like to get rid of that greasy sort of feeling they seem to have if you just rinse them in cold water.Soft fruit just gets rinsed but sometimes I don't with raspberries as they are already very soggy.

ImbarbaraB · 12/07/2021 19:07

If there’s something that harmful on your unwashed fruit a rinse under the tap isn’t going to rid them of disease

Or do these people fully disinfect or give their fruit a bubble bath?

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:07

Would that be a google of quality scientific papers, or just searching for somebody who agrees with you on a random website that isn't run by a scientist?

BillieSpain · 12/07/2021 19:07

@babynameneeded

*I was admitted to hospital from unwashed fruit. It can be horrible.

YABU*

Well I’ll be damned. Let’s all stop eating unwashed strawberries. Can’t possibly be safe if a singular person got ill

It's helibactiria virus (or something, I live in Spain) doctors told me I should ALWAYS peel fruit!

Sorry if that irritates you, but it is the truth. I was very, very unwell.

The pickers piss and don't wash their hands basically.

If you picked the fruit yourself, fine.

ImbarbaraB · 12/07/2021 19:08

So billie - how do you wash your unpeelable fruit to get the piss off them?

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:08

Is it true that you can see things creepy crawlying out of strawbs when you soak them? I've never given them more than a cursory rinse so I wouldn't know Grin

Nononsense2 · 12/07/2021 19:09

I'm just amazed how many people are saying they never wash their fruit or veg. If not for the pesticides, some veg have soil or worms like leeks, spinach, cabbage, etc Confused

BillieSpain · 12/07/2021 19:09

I don't/can't eat it any more.
IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:10

Side note: the creepy crawly thing is why I haven't eaten strawberries in ages. Can't be bothered with the soaking, and mine in the garden get pinched by the birds!

BillieSpain · 12/07/2021 19:10

I have been irreverably damaged. Sad

The nhs website says that washing fruit and veg will help remove bacteria including e coli from the surface

I've never bought spinach, cabbage or leeks that haven't been washed and cleaned already.

But have you never gone strawberry or blackberry picking and eaten the fruit straight off the bush? Or apple picking?

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 12/07/2021 19:12

I never wash strawberries/anything we've grown at home, or from anywhere that I know does not spray produce with herbicides and pesticides.

However, I've spent years in a satellite role, looking at the impact of herbicides and pesticides on drinking water/health and I want as little of that shit in my body as possible. Strawberries are among the produce types that retain more pesticide residue than most.

That said, your friend was wrong - no one will 'become unwell' as a direct result of eating an unwashed strawberry, and she was probably rude as well.

Comedycook · 12/07/2021 19:12

I bought spinach that was meant to have been pre washed but I could taste soil and grit. I was so unwell

babynameneeded · 12/07/2021 19:12

@BillieSpain

No irritated at all.

But 1 person getting ill is hardly justification for a majority of people to change their ways

Christmasfairy2020 · 12/07/2021 19:13

Tbh I've just let my dd pick cherries from a tree and eat them when we was out

Frazzled2207 · 12/07/2021 19:13

I do wash strawberries but would not be remotely bothered about a child eating a single unwashed strawberry nor would anyone else I know.

Just realised I wash strawberries but never wash raspberries in the punnet! Oops

BillieSpain · 12/07/2021 19:13

You absolutely must wash fruit, unless picked yourself, from your garden. Honestly.

SpeakingFranglais · 12/07/2021 19:13

@rainbowunicorn

I have never washed a strawberry in my life whether from the supermarket, picked from the field or grown in the garden. I am 50 and eat them most days from April to September so I guess not that dangerous
Me too! Age 55 and never been ill from An unwashed strawberry, in fact I don’t wash any of my fruit or veg other than lettuce which can be gritty or pesticide bitter 🤷‍♀️ 😱
GreyGoose1980 · 12/07/2021 19:13

I’d normally wash strawberries but if you were doing her a favour by looking after her DC she really shouldn’t have mentioned it at all. A polite request to wash the strawberries next time would still have been a bit annoying in the context but her text is really rude!

IAmAWomanNotACis · 12/07/2021 19:13

So much comes to the supermarket washed and trimmed anyway though.

Leeks in the supermarket hardly ever have more than a tiny bit of soil because they have been topped and tailed.

Spinach - often ready washed.
Cabbage - depending on variety, usually ready trimmed.

I will admit that ease of washing/not having to wash is one factor in my decision about which fruit and veg to buy. I detest standing and scrubbing at layers and layers of soil in leek tops, and at savoy cabbage leaves. There's always a bit you miss!

Lemonandlime123 · 12/07/2021 19:13

YABU not to wash fruit and veg as it helps to remove any traces of bacteria from the surface including E.Coli which can be really nasty!
