Aibu to think that a Bank holiday is already planned for Monday, early benefit payment?

I help a relative with budgeting (and general support/care) and they have just messaged me to say that the money expected on Monday has gone in yesterday. I know it always goes in on a Monday unless the following Monday is a bank holiday, then it gets paid on a Friday.

Do the DWP know something?

How on earth could they announce a bank holiday with a few hours notice.

Romanoff · 10/07/2021 19:51

Not a chance it's a bank holiday on Monday.

HunkyPunk · 10/07/2021 19:51

Not even this govt. would pull a stunt like that, surely?

MouldyPotato · 10/07/2021 19:52

More likely they are letting their staff come in a bit late or something. They can't announce a bank holiday in the same way they announced their last minute Coronavirus restrictions last year. It would cause chaos. The banks would need to know for a start.

Orf1abc · 10/07/2021 19:53

It's not at all unusual for a DWP Monday payment to go in on a Friday, so much so that some claimants panic when it is not there as they assume that is their payment day.

Plus, as above, you can't announce a public holiday with two hours notice.

AndNobbyDancing · 10/07/2021 19:53

Well I must admit I thought that (despite obviously being keen on the idea) but I don't understand why they have been given the payment early, I guess unless the DWP have been allowed to have Monday off?

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 10/07/2021 19:53

The DWP presumably know that's it's impossible for them to make a payment on a bank holiday, so they need to be prepared just in case...

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 10/07/2021 19:53

How would that even work, would everyone wait up for the end of the match to find out if they can not turn up to work Grin. People who don't care about football and don't know the result are going to be pissed off when they get to work Grin

LIZS · 10/07/2021 19:54

Nope. Pure coincidence. Bank holidays need planning in advance, you cannot spontaneously put business and life on hold. But it does mean you have money to spend on drinks, paraphernalia, events and put back into the economy while it lasts.

Orf1abc · 10/07/2021 19:54

No, the DWP do not have Monday off work. This happens all the time!

GallopAlong · 10/07/2021 19:56

I work at DWP and I'm going into work on Monday! We don't know anything you don't know.

SmileyClare · 10/07/2021 19:56

Perhaps the DWP are expecting to be short staffed on Monday. Lots of businesses and schools are allowing a late start or half day on Monday.

I don't know in general but I know for the person I support it is very unusual, when they know it will be paid early (ie only on abank holiday) they transfer the money to me so I can transfer back on the monday so they can meet bills. (Sadly can't regulate money)

Our Tuesday tax credit payment has gone in already, but my carers allowance payment that is due Monday has not. Definitely won't be a bank holiday with no notice though

But this is more concerning, they would be spending what they couldn't afford, and certainly if they hadn't check in the afternoon the money would have been spent before tomorrow.

Depending where the benefit is coming from, it could be because of battle of the boyne on Monday. (Northern Ireland Bank holiday)

Chunkymenrock · 10/07/2021 20:00

There are 3 other nations apart from England in the UK, OP. Hmm Nobody I know here in Wales is that fussed about it.

maxineputyourredshoeson · 10/07/2021 20:00

There is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland on Monday so that’s probably why?

implantsandaDyson · 10/07/2021 20:01

It's already a bank holiday in NI (12 July), that's why the payments have gone in early.

That's a shame, as I was very fussed about the Wales match. But that is an aside

I do wish they were clearer on when things will be paid, their app says Monday, its difficult with additional needs.

Orf1abc · 10/07/2021 20:06

Benefits in NI are administered by the Department for Communities, not the DWP.

MaverickDanger · 10/07/2021 20:09

If it’s a bank holiday anywhere in the UK, the payment can be early.

Chunkymenrock · 10/07/2021 20:09

Essentialironingwater · 10/07/2021 20:19

Maybe because it's bank hol in NI?
