Aibu to think that a Bank holiday is already planned for Monday, early benefit payment?

I help a relative with budgeting (and general support/care) and they have just messaged me to say that the money expected on Monday has gone in yesterday. I know it always goes in on a Monday unless the following Monday is a bank holiday, then it gets paid on a Friday.

Do the DWP know something?

My carers allowance goes in every Monday unless it's a bank holiday and it isn't in.

Must be a coincidence or them trying to get a head start on Monday if they're expecting lots off or late in.

@JustMeG

Depending where the benefit is coming from, it could be because of battle of the boyne on Monday. (Northern Ireland Bank holiday)
This would make sense as I guess it is a centralised system. I've obviously just not seen the significance in the past and just tried to sort the fall out.

It sounds difficult if the relative you care for cannot control their spending and has additional needs. Perhaps you could ask DWP to pay the money directly to you, if you are in charge of finances? Or apply for power of attorney?

22Giraffes · 10/07/2021 20:30

@AndNobbyDancing I did wonder about this too! My payment came in yesterday instead of next Monday. I know this is not unheard of but for me it is only ever when there is a bank holiday, or sometimes at the end of the tax year if any payments need to be made to account for adjustments.

Thanks, it is. There is such a fine line between supporting, enabling, and removing their autonomy. From support groups I know I am lucky as the person I support understands their issues and tries so hard to help themselves.

As others have said. It’s a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and the gov uk page says if it’s a bank holiday anywhere in the uk your payment may be early

MouldyPotato · 10/07/2021 20:32

SmileyClare has some good ideas here. Or they might have a procedure for vulnerable customers?

This is our experience as well which is why I was surprised.

It’s because the staff who process payments can be anywhere in the uk - so if your payment is processed in Northern Ireland and it’s a bank holiday there they’ll do it early. Same for Scotland

PumpkinKlNG · 10/07/2021 20:33

Mine hasn’t gone in yet so not early for everyone

Proudmumtoday · 10/07/2021 20:34

Sorry - Scottish bank holidays.

If your payment is allocated to be processed in a Northern Ireland office it’ll be early regardless of where in the uk you yourself are.

FlaminEckVera · 10/07/2021 20:35

@AndNobbyDancing Nope, not gonna happen. As a few posters have said, they can't just say at 10pm Sunday night, 'OK bank holiday tomorrow everyone!' (If we win.)

If we DO win though, it will be nice to have a bank holiday every year on the second week in July. Only for England though.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 10/07/2021 20:39

There's a big DWP processing centre based in Belfast so NI holidays often affect mainland benefit payments, its not uncommon for payments to go in early when this happens (I used to work in benefits and credits). Some banks can also process payments faster than other banks, we used to get loads of problems with Barclays clearing Monday payments on the Saturday before to the point that we'd get people phoning to say their Saturday payments hadn't gone in and they always get paid on a Saturday, we had to point out that their payment date was actually a Monday and they'd just been lucky to get it early.

Ah that makes sense

Tbf, I could believe that the government would do this.

Monday is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a lot of DWP payments originate in Northern Ireland so are paid early when they have a bank holiday. No mystery in it at all.

EatingAllThePies · 10/07/2021 20:59

Many other reasons already listed. There's definitely no bank holiday on Monday, it would need to be announced on a working day so after everyone in a 9-5 was sitting at their desks!

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 10/07/2021 21:04

It always goes in early in advance of the NI bank holiday.

MadeOfStarStuff · 10/07/2021 21:05

Don’t be ridiculous, the government aren’t going to announce a bank holiday with no notice

Adreinnesarmy · 10/07/2021 21:07

That would presuppose that the DWP know the outcome of the game and that England win. Which is ridiculous,

DumplingsAndStew · 10/07/2021 21:24

Which benefit is it? I'm due a payment on Monday and it hasn't gone it early...

Proudmumtoday · 10/07/2021 21:25

@DumplingsAndStew it depends where in the uk processes your payment. A lot is done in Belfast, and it’s a bank holiday in Northern Ireland on Monday so if your benefit is processed there - regardless of where in the UK you live - it’ll be early. If your benefit is processed elsewhere in the uk it won’t be early

Really? Is that a new thing? I've always seen dates published by DWP if benefits are expected to be paid early (e.g. Christmas and NY) and it's never specified that it's dependent on which processing center is used.

Stigsmother · 10/07/2021 21:48

DWP have definitely NOT been given Monday off....I wish, it's our busiest day.
Monday payments are often credited Friday/Saturday

Proudmumtoday · 10/07/2021 21:50

@DumplingsAndStew they say on their pages that your payments may be early if there is a bank holiday anywhere in the uk.
