To ask what is the best BUDGET hotel you've stayed at (UK preferably)

Inspired by another thread with eye-wateringly expensive hotels, what are your best BUDGET hotel/accommodation experiences? Especially for us who have had a wonderful surprise when eeking out every last penny to treat ourselves/the kids to a break away from the daily grind!

Mine was YHA York in lockdown - the room had a mezzanine which the kids were thrilled about, and got to sleep upstairs where they could see the stars through the velux window (OK I am bigging this up but hey ho, completely exceeded my expectations for £29 a night for the 3 of us)

@rosalie11

Agree with premier inn or travel lodge

Stay clear of Britannia hotels they are absolutely foul

Agree about Britannia, pre Covid I used to travel regularly to Birmingham, on my first visit I was told under no circumstances to ever agree to staying at the Britannia! Tbh having walked past I wasn't going to argue. Grim.

The Holiday Inn Express in Birmingham by Snow Hill Station is great, it even has a little gym which is rare in a budget hotel.

Some of the new Travelodges or the ones that have been refurbed with the Super Rooms are lovely. We stayed in 2 in Central London a couple of years ago for under £50, both rooms were small but fantastic locations, one was just across the road from Cannon Street station, the other one was over near Aldgate. Both were spotlessly clean. Couldn't fault them.

@TheGenealogist would be fascinated to stay in that one, used to visit the building about 20 years ago when it was an office building.

To add to the thread PI in Bury St Edmunds is very nice building

LidoLady · 10/07/2021 21:12

Premier Inn gets my note too.

thefirstmrsrochester · 10/07/2021 21:26

For all UK breaks I always top and tail the holiday with premiere inns to extend the time away. Cheap, comfortable and spacious. Love them.

The Premier Inn at Ashington, Northumberland, is in a really nice location, it's next to a large lake, some people were swimming and others were fishing, when I stayed a month ago

Weusedtobegiants · 10/07/2021 21:34

Premier Inn Exmouth, we had a room at the front of the hotel and the view of the beach and out to sea was lovely, my daughter loved watching the kite surfers in the morning.

Travelodge Scarborough. Right on the front and close to the town centre. Super sea views from large bay window.
About 5 years ago, in summer holidays, got a big room for me and 2DCs for £19 per night including breakfast.
It's been done up since then and when I last checked, prices were about 4 times higher...

Premier Inn, just back from Worthing seafront, new build, large rooms, fabulous and lovely old seaside town - surprisingly great.

@Puffalicious
If you go to London try the Premier Inn Prescott St
It’s 2 mins to Tower of London
If you ask for an alcove room there are 3 on each floor they are absolutely huge as in you could easily fit 2 -3 double bed in and still have plenty of space to dance around naked 😂
Great location if you want to be near Tower of London And st Katherine Docks as it’s 2 min walk away

confidentialitybreach · 10/07/2021 22:42

Premier inn for me too. I’ve only ever had one bad experience there (out of numerous stays) which wasn’t their fault, mostly external noise and when I said I hadn’t slept well I was refunded, no questions asked!

I have stayed in a Jury’s Inn in Dublin and think I paid £100 for 2 nights for 2 people including breakfast. The room was clean and spacious and the breakfast was really good.

Also stayed in a couple of park plaza hotels. The one on London Riverbank wasn’t the cheapest (maybe £100-120 a night) but was fantastic! We had a great view of the river, and it was my birthday so we got free breakfast, complimentary champagne in the room on both days and chocolates.

We have also stayed in some really great, reasonably priced hotels abroad in Europe and the USA.

LouLou198 · 10/07/2021 22:45

Holiday inn express near the nec in Birmingham. Really reasonable so wasn't expecting much, but the room was lovely and clean, modern deco. The breakfast buffet was amazing too.

Puffalicious · 11/07/2021 01:10

Thanks wegobshite great tip! I like the dancing naked!

FanSpamTastic · 11/07/2021 01:41

YHA at Ilam Hall in Derbyshire - fabulous location. We had a family room at the front.

AwkwardSquad · 11/07/2021 05:49

Premier Inn gets my vote too.

For ones that are also in good locations, the PI in Newhaven, Edinburgh, is right on the water and if you get a bedroom on the waterside, there’s a wonderful view.

The one near Waverley Station in Edinburgh is tucked under the Royal Mile - when we stayed there, we were up and on the Royal Mile really early, and it was empty. It was great.

denshort · 11/07/2021 06:26

Campanile Geneva Airport (French side). Such an great restaurant, hotel is brilliant for the (incredibly) reasonable price.

izzybobsmum · 11/07/2021 07:32

My favourite Premier Inn for London is the one at Putney Bridge. Two minute walk away from the overland train into London. The area is nice. I’ve just booked 4 nights including breakfast for me, DH and DD in the school holidays for £300.

The self-catering cottages we were looking at in Northumberland/the Borders for the same period were almost a thousand pounds which we just couldn’t afford.

I’ve had so many weekends away that I wouldn’t have afforded otherwise thanks to Premier Inn!

Comefromaway · 11/07/2021 20:13

I’m just looking at that one for dd Izzy until her references come through for her new flat share. She could be there for up to two weeks.

She said Easy Hotel in Victoria is cheaper but it’s got very poor reviews.

Roystonv · 26/07/2021 08:34

Beware Travelodge Scarborough, yes good price and location but rather run down; if you take this into account you'll be fine. However, way better than The Grand opposite.

TheVolturi · 26/07/2021 08:37

Definitely Premier Inn! Worth the money just for the brekkie 🤣
