Inspired by another thread with eye-wateringly expensive hotels, what are your best BUDGET hotel/accommodation experiences? Especially for us who have had a wonderful surprise when eeking out every last penny to treat ourselves/the kids to a break away from the daily grind!

Mine was YHA York in lockdown - the room had a mezzanine which the kids were thrilled about, and got to sleep upstairs where they could see the stars through the velux window (OK I am bigging this up but hey ho, completely exceeded my expectations for £29 a night for the 3 of us)

I stayed one night in a Premier Inn and the room stank of curry all night, apparently the chef lived in a room immediately below ! Spoke to reception and they immediately refunded me, so no complaints there.

Premier inn at kings cross. Great central London location, large family rooms. Spotlessly clean and a decent breakfast.

Certainly wasn’t £29 per night but very good value

grafittiartist · 10/07/2021 10:26

Agree with Premier Inn!
The Edinburgh one is amazing- walkable from the station, and right on Princes st. Breakfast overlooking the castle.

DoctorSnortles · 10/07/2021 10:26

Stayed at a Premier Inn in Edinburgh, right by Waverley. (East Market Street?). Room had views of the Balmoral and Calton Hill, plus DD (who was little at the time) loved watching the trains and people at the station.

The hostel boat in Bristol, lovely private room was big, comfy and spotless.

Buchanan Galleries premier Inn in Glasgow. I stayed in an executive suite and the city views were great. Premier Inn family rooms are always our go to for budget breaks.

Hairbrush123 · 10/07/2021 10:37

Haha I wonder whose post you are referring to Wink.

My favourite budget hotel in the UK is Premier Inn. I don’t like all of them however I’ve started to branch off to their nicer rooms in the hotel for a bit more - can’t remember the name of it on the top of my head! Love Super Rooms at Travelodge too.

My favourite Premier Inn hotel is definitely Heathrow T4. I’ve paid rock bottom prices (£23 for an overnight stay before a flight) and loved it. Would highly recommend if you’re staying at Heathrow for a flight or just generally if you want to see something nearby!

Premier Inn Caernarfon- right on a harbour with tons of boats, some of the rooms might have sea views, the family room we had was the biggest hotel room ever ! 5 minute walk to the centre across the harbour and no traffic. Parking prices were reasonable and breakfast great.
I used to stay in Premier Inn all the time travelling with work. Bracknell one is the worst but Edinburgh Park one lovely

GalacticDragonfly · 10/07/2021 10:45

Love a Premier Inn. The Worthing one has lovely sea views.

We have just returned from premier Inn tower bridge London
We had a view of the shard ..beautiful when It was lit up at night
We could also just see the top of the London eye

We were less than 5 mins away from the spectacular tower bridge and 10 mins from the tower of london £45 each per night ..

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 10/07/2021 12:10

I've also stayed in rooms at The Hub, a Premier Inn offshoot - London & Edinburgh are the two I've stayed at. The London one looked out to the BT Tower, great location, the room was spotless and really reasonably priced.

Glitteryone · 10/07/2021 12:11

As 50000 people have already said Premier Inn.

However, their prices have tripled due to demand for staycations this year.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 10/07/2021 12:14

Premier Inn

maddening · 10/07/2021 12:14

Never had a problem at premier Inn, travelodge or ibis. When you pay £25 and have a clean room with all the facilities and a comfy bed all is good.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 10/07/2021 12:15

@Couldhavebeenme2

So has anyone had any outstanding views, or locations, or anything just a bit more special about particular Premier Inns or similar? I'm an expert in grungy car park views, or 'close to transport links' experiences, hit me with somewhere that will impress with more than just price Grin
There’s a lovely one on the edge of Helston in Cornwall, which is set in open fields, with countryside views, and the added excitement of seeing the big helicopters come and go from RNAS Culdrose just up the road! You’re close to everything you’d want to see in Cornwall too.

Not a specific hotel but always had a decent stay in any Holiday Inn Express. Love their breakfasts.

Orf1abc · 10/07/2021 12:20

However, their prices have tripled due to demand for staycations this year.

Most non London city locations are pretty cheap still, especially during the week. I've got stays in Liverpool and Manchester for £35 a night in August.

Northernsoullover · 10/07/2021 12:21

I like Holiday Inn Express. The breakfast is lovely.

Claysta · 10/07/2021 12:21

Another Premier Inn vote, stayed at the one in York, so clean and comfortable and could walk to the City attractions with the kids. They also arranged the kids cuddly toys when they made the room up and hand wrote a postcard. I was impressed.

Spanglemum · 10/07/2021 12:26

There is a Campanile in Birmingham that is very reasonable and good free breakfast. Other than that, Premier Inn.

mongoosebaby · 10/07/2021 12:42

Premier inn on Exmouth seafront is lovely- sea views and a good breakfast, wasnt expensive but i can't remember what we paid. The travel lodge in Helensburgh also had amazing views and a great location, we had a huge family room for about £30 a night (term time). It's our favourite Scottish holiday.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 10/07/2021 12:43

@Northernsoullover

I like Holiday Inn Express. The breakfast is lovely.
They also have A/C in a lot of them.
wanderedlonelyasacloud · 10/07/2021 12:44

Have to agree with everyone saying premier inns, particularly the premier inn hubs in London.

I've stayed in a few and the tech in the rooms is always really good and the space is always laid out really cleverly.

Erictheavocado · 10/07/2021 12:48

Another vote for Premier Inn. We tend to use PI rather than anything else because we usually have a decent sized room, very clean, well positioned at a decent price. I think views etc are dependant on whether you are at one which is basically a stopover an route to a different destination, or one which is the destination. Eg, most of those we have stayed in around York, are probably the 'end route' type, so views vary between a view over the car park or farmland. OTOH , we have stayed in some like the one in The Cotswolds or near Cheddar Gorge which had stunning views of the local area.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/07/2021 13:21

There's a citylodge in Wakefield (ex Travelodge) - first time I stayed there, I was upgraded to an executive room - not that glamorous, but it rained really heavily in the day, and I sooo appreciated microwaving something and not venturing out. Have stayed several times - I go most years to visit the sculpture park, and now pay for an "exec" room.

Usually find Travelodge reliable - I booked on a saver deal & paid £9 once; a friend decided to come with me after I'd booked, which was OK as twin beds available - although we both agreed that for £9 we could have splashed out and had separate rooms.
