To ask what is the best BUDGET hotel you've stayed at (UK preferably)

Inspired by another thread with eye-wateringly expensive hotels, what are your best BUDGET hotel/accommodation experiences? Especially for us who have had a wonderful surprise when eeking out every last penny to treat ourselves/the kids to a break away from the daily grind!

Mine was YHA York in lockdown - the room had a mezzanine which the kids were thrilled about, and got to sleep upstairs where they could see the stars through the velux window (OK I am bigging this up but hey ho, completely exceeded my expectations for £29 a night for the 3 of us)

Not for a family stay (the rooms are small - but good, I'll get to that!) but whenever we've stayed at the Citizen M in Glasgow I'm always v happy.

The beds are HUGE, they have fancy lighting in the room controlled by an equally fancy iPad, the hotel itself looks lovely inside design-wise, and it's just generally a good experience for a cheapy hotel (don't think we've ever paid more than £100 per night for the Glasgow one). It's kind of a pod-style vibe so not a high-end or spacious experience, but we always stay there when we're in Glasgow now.

@Couldhavebeenme2

So has anyone had any outstanding views, or locations, or anything just a bit more special about particular Premier Inns or similar? I'm an expert in grungy car park views, or 'close to transport links' experiences, hit me with somewhere that will impress with more than just price Grin

I would suggest making a telephone booking rather than online if you are looking for a particular room eg sea view . We stayed at Aberystwyth last year and paid extra for one of the premier plus rooms with fridge etc and hoped it would have sea view . Sadly it had a car park view and the member of staff explained that none of the more expensive rooms had sea view as they were all in the new building at the back, but they recommended another time if we wanted a view over the front to make a phone booking so we could explain what we wanted .

Oh and if you ask for a high up room you get an amazing view of the city and a huuuuuuge window to look out! Feels like you're in Bladerunner if you make the room lights go blue or green...

It's definitely more suited to a dirty night away than a romantic trip haha, but I love it.

IdblowJonSnow · 10/07/2021 18:40

Just to add, we stayed at premier inn at Greenwich as a family once which was fab. Clean and comfortable, food was great and kids loved it despite being fussy.
There is tons to do in Greenwich and also just a short boat trip from Tower of London.

Puffalicious · 10/07/2021 18:42

Inspired by this thread and thinking of taking teens for few nights in London. Online v good deals. Which is the best premier Inn you reckon.?

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2021 18:42

@IdblowJonSnow

Can anyone recommend somewhere for a solo traveller in the Dale's somewhere? That isn't too pricey? Planning a solo jaunt mid summer hols to stay sane! Blush
We really like Masham - good base for the Dales and lots of nice pubs and cafes. The King’s Head there is coming in at about £70 a night, less than some Premier Inns.

Premier Inn Albert Dock Liverpool. Gorgeous period building, fabulous views over the Dock and the world famous friendly, funny Scouse staff.
This!!
GreenTeaPingPong · 10/07/2021 18:51

For slightly nicer than Premier inn but still budget hotel in London, we stayed at Doubletree by Hilton, the one in Pentonville Road, close to Angel tube station, easy to get the tube to wherever you want in central or north London. The kids loved that they gave us cookies at check-in! Rooms from £80 it says currently on website.

Funny you should say its good for a dirty night away in your follow up to this. I work across the road and let's just say we've seen some very interesting sights!! 🤣🤣🤣

We have stayed at the Victory Services Club in London, near Marble Arch, Oxford Street etc. It is not budget, but much much less than comparable hotels in decent locations. They have a great restaurant and the rooms are lovely and clean.

The catch is they are a membership club based on military service. DH was in the Royal Navy and he joined. I wish we had found it sooner. We have booked ourselves and DS and family for September. They have really big new family rooms for DS and his family including our two grandchildren.

Crossing my fingers Canada will be on the green list by then.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 10/07/2021 18:59

@twilightcafe

I'm in a £29 per night Premier Inn room right now. On my own. No kids, no cat, no snoring DH.
You're living the dream! So jealous Envy

Like everyone else, a Premier Inn can't be beaten. Agree that the Greenwich one is good.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 10/07/2021 19:05

@TheHeathenOfSuburbia

Ok own up OP, did Premier Inn sponsor you to start this thread? Grin
Ha, I wish! I'm being bombarded by ads for Premier Inn across all my social media now, careful what you wish for eh?

I mean, if they want to offer me a discount for a night or two I wouldn't complain Wink

Premier inn, love the beds, thinking about staying at the one at the bottom of my street just to sleep in the bed. Always go for a breakfast as well.
Favourite Salford quays

TheGenealogist · 10/07/2021 19:19

We stayed in the Premier Inn Edinburgh City Centre York Place when seeing a show nearby and it was really good. Ultra modern, super central, quiet and the breakfast was good too.

Imapotato · 10/07/2021 19:32

Holiday in express in Filton is pretty nice. Shower was amazing.

The sidholme hotel in sidmouth far surpassed expectations for the price paid and sidmouth is lovely.

scarletandblack13 · 10/07/2021 20:05

The YHA in Whitby Abbey- wouldn't stay anywhere else, amazing cliff top views and staying in the Abbey for the cheapest price in town. Also the YHA at St Briavels near the Welsh border which is an actual castle. A castle! I paid £30 for a female dorm and had it to myself as no one else staying (December).

WeatheringStorms22 · 10/07/2021 20:08

Premier Inn Dover, 3 years ago. We stayed before an early ferry.

All Premier Inns are bargains but it was £19 for a family room! Never seen one that cheap since.

WeatheringStorms22 · 10/07/2021 20:13

As 50000 people have already said Premier Inn. However, their prices have tripled due to demand for staycations this year

I haven't noticed this.

I have a family room booked for 3 nights in Bagshot PI in the middle of August and we paid £91 (think it was £30/£30/£31). I only booked about 3 weeks ago.

Lemonmelonsun · 10/07/2021 20:42

I have wouid I have said Premier Inn until one dome we stayed at newish one by they coast.

The bed clearly wasn't made and had a human impression in the sheet and I made a the mistake of lifting the the sheet under it the topper was laden with thick hairs similarly the bathroom.. Initially I kindly complained and said we were going out and I was assured it would be turned down by the time we came back.
8+30 pm several hours later and tired... Not turned down.
They actually then argued with me, moaned about cleaving late, said there probably wouldn't be a spate topper, said they couldn't clean with dh in the room.... Fucking nightmare.. She changed the sheet and left the bathroom by which point we weren't to tired to care anymore..

Also windows didn't open.

Anyway op... Yy to yha some absolute gems!

Lemonmelonsun · 10/07/2021 20:43

Also in many premier Inn in the windows don't open... I can't sleep without opening window.

rosalie11 · 10/07/2021 20:47

Agree with premier inn or travel lodge

Stay clear of Britannia hotels they are absolutely foul

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/07/2021 20:50

Four friends and I stayed in a budget Ibis in Southampton years ago. Very basic but cheap and comfortable. We had two rooms - one with a double bed and a bunk bed above it.

I would recommend the Southampton serviced apartments. Cheap for what they are and you get two double bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/dining/living space and two bathrooms. Excellent and so comfortable!

We also stayed in a service station hotel near Southampton (we go there a lot as it’s a central location for us) that was awful. Really uncomfortable bed but it was incredibly cheap. I think we paid about £10 each for two nights.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 10/07/2021 20:56

Definitely not a budget hotel, but the Grand Casselburgh hotel in Bruges did us a fantastic deal a few years ago with four friends sharing the family room (split level, enormous) and it worked out at £80 each for two nights. Beautiful hotel. A friend did the arrangements so I think there was a deal/discount but keep an eye on the website because it was fab. Really central, had a car park, very posh (flower arrangements and chandeliers in the ladies' loo, for example - I was impressed by these).

aibubaby · 10/07/2021 21:00

Hahahahahaaaa... if you work on the Conservatoire side (we always seem to get that side?!) I'm sorry 🤣🤣🤣

It is also nice for non-dirty weekends though OP if you're reading haha - good location (in the best city in the UK).

KingdomScrolls · 10/07/2021 21:01

I was put in a hotel next door to West Midlands Safari park for work once, I know the budget was no more than £71 a night (public sector) you could hear the lions, breakfast was lovely, room was large and very comfortable and it had a pool! I'm assuming it would be a little cheaper without breakfast.
