To think it’s getting harder to sell things

I do give a lot away but it seems anything I try to sell never does. I’m currently selling a new packet of Disney baby grows for £3.50 less then what I paid for them yet no interest.

I'm afraid they are too expensive OP, when I sell anything I bulk it so a big box of duplo £5 or £10 if Lego.

Basically I no longer need it and so sell it cheap to get rid. You need to bundle a bin bag size of clothes for £10, that always sells.

It does feel like people want something for nothing

The people who made the babygrows in the first place may well feel the same way.

See, I find a lot of people want too much for their stuff. Ebay, Gumtree, etc. It's easier to point and click and buy new.
thriftyhen · 10/07/2021 12:24

You need to forget about the new price, it's the second hand price that counts. Have a scroll through eBay and see what something similar to yours is selling for. You will probably do better by selling baby clothes in bundles.

The thing is, they don't particularly want them at all. If they're on your local selling Facebook page, nless you're after something particular, people browse.

If they see a bargain, in their eyes, they'll buy it.

I doubt anyone's cruising for vests.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/07/2021 12:31

Many people who are looking for cheap baby clothes are doing it because they can't afford new. So yes, they are trying to get stuff for next to nothing.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/07/2021 12:36

I’d charge 2 quid.

My stuff always sells.🙂

There was a thread about charity shops a few weeks ago that made a few good points.

Quite often, people buying secondhand baby basics are doing so because they need to.

When you can buy 3 white sleepsuits for £5 in Asda, you won't want to pay the same or more for secondhand.

If you're on your uppers, new quite often trumps Disney if Disney is secondhand and inconvenient.

If it's an occasion, you might go for a secondhand "good" brand that you couldn't afford new. But that's, self esteem wise, different.

I can remember feeling like this for a while.

I know yours are unused. But still, secondhand.

ssd · 10/07/2021 12:46

Id recharge them at 3.50 and see what happens.

Well i wouldn't, I'd give them to charity and be done with it.

Whyyouso · 10/07/2021 12:50

It does annoy me as I give so much away and that’s often jumped on within seconds. If it’s good enough that you would take it for free why not pay a bit for it

Because someone else is offering free! Or cheaper
Caspianberg · 10/07/2021 12:52

It’s just not worth it, I would just pick up something else from shop instead of hassle arranging collecting or postage.

Best option is to sell a whole selection as bundle for £20 instead. So when you have more stuff bundle and sell. I would be more inclined to drive and collect if it’s a large amount of stuff

worktrip · 10/07/2021 12:59

Quite frankly, we get better stuff than that on our local freecycle Facebook page. Just collected a long cardigan with tags still on for free.

It feels like you're ignoring the useful advice...
wheresmymojo · 10/07/2021 13:12

I sell quite a lot and rarely have an issue with getting a buyer...

Generally though I agree with a PP that brand new is 40-50% and used is max 30% if in great condition.

This can change if there is a glut of a particular item - so I just sold an IKEA desk which was £100 new for £20 because following lockdowns lots of people are now selling desks either because they're going back to the office or because they bought a cheap desk to see them through and now are investing in something they want longer term.

They might pay a bit, but not £5. Or they might think it’s worth it to pay £5 from somewhere they can exercise their statutory consumer rights.
GU24Mum · 10/07/2021 13:20

OP, I used to run out NCT sales ago around the time that the Primark stuff was first around. I used to write the guide for sellers and said that they needed to think what price the items were likely to have been discounted to by the shop in a sale and then take off an amount from there. So if you paid £8.50 but there was then a 20% off week or they went into the sale at £5 for example you need to work back from there. Things really changed with the Primark stuff being available and only things like Next/Gap/John Lewis sold well.

I do lots of Freecycle and Facebook stuff. With the FB pages, occasionally you can get money for things but invariably it's very hard unless it's a complete bar again. I often decide it's easier just to Freecycle it. It's a bit galling sometimes but unless you need money and have ample time, it's often not worth the hassle.

MouldyPotato · 10/07/2021 13:27

If I want to buy 2nd hand it's because I'm trying to save cash so it needs to be as cheap as possible or it's not worth it and I'll find someone selling it cheaper. New stuff costs more so it's not cheap enough.

mintaerobrownie · 10/07/2021 13:32

I know trying to sell some Duplo sets and it's so expensive to buy new. I try not to overprice things and I buy second hand too, but no interest.

Viviennemary · 10/07/2021 13:36

Some duplo is really cheap these days from Argos and other places when they have offers on. And no postal costs if you collect.

Caspianberg · 10/07/2021 14:10

Duplo secondhand still goes cheap.
My mother just picked Ds up a whole tub of secondhand Duplo from the charity shop, and she said it was only priced at £6. She felt slightly bad so gave them £10. But new value is probably in the region of £200-250 easily.

Viviennemary · 10/07/2021 15:08

Your mum got a great bargain. OP is talking about expecting to sell at more than half price. Different item granted. I want a giant tub of Duplo for £10!

tallduckandhandsome · 10/07/2021 15:11

£5 + £2 or whatever for delivery - why would anyone bother? You can get Disney baby grid at Primark for less than that.
