I am and feeling quite sad about it. Anyone want to keep each other company while we watch?

Overall a good tournament, feel so bad for the younger players, but they’ll grow and get even better.

So glad not to be out tonight, based on the messages I’ve got from friends.

@Spanielstail

Maybe Rashford should have spent more time practicing being a footballer and less time trying to be a socialist hero.

Disgusting removing their medals.

Appalled at the fans too, booing and storming the stadium. Pity that England got to the final and there isn't a lot to be proud of.

Lucky the world is full of miserable twats like you to set the world to rights.
toastantea · 11/07/2021 23:34

@Ilovegreentomatoes

I think you have to volunteer to take the penalties? Unless I'm wrong?

Southgate has just confirmed he decided the penalty takers

Ratalie · 11/07/2021 23:35

I just don't understand the thought process.

Rashford had a poor season, culminating in missing a sitter in the Europa League final (that Man U went on to lose) and received a barrage of racist abuse. His confidence looked shot.

He has barely played since then and you bring him on in the last minute of the final for the sake of taking a penalty?

Thrown to the wolves.

VerticalHorizon · 11/07/2021 23:35

The manager decides. He'll typically ask the players 'who feels confident', and he'll get a feel of who to choose from. Then he decides.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 11/07/2021 23:36

Southgate is great but he screwed up with the penalty takers. He sounds choked up tbh.

WetPaint4 · 11/07/2021 23:37

Italy dominated that game. We had younger, more energetic players and played a dull, negative game. So many talented young players who barely played and Southgate brings a couple on at the end just to take the pressure of pens? And leave a teenager to take a crucial penalty? Sterling was handled well by the Italians, Kane looked lethargic and kept trying to draw fouls and we played like we had no striker. Southgate should have changed it up much sooner.

England scored in the 2nd minute and had one further shot on target in two hours. We didn't deserve victory at that point but then for Southgate to pile pressure on the youngest members of the squad, two of whom he'd barely trusted with regular game time, was truly pathetic.

1jan2021 · 11/07/2021 23:38

How do you know they didn't?
How do you know how it was decided?
You don't.

I may be wrong, but I assume Southgate would have gone with the more experienced players if they did step up? I’m certainly no expert though.

At the end of the day they all did us proud - getting to the final is a fantastic achievement. Well done lads!

So many things wrong in your post. Let's all agree to laugh and move past it.

People seem to be forgetting that before the penalty stage we drew with Italy in an International football competition final, for the first time 55 YEARS!!! That is BRILLIANT!

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 11/07/2021 23:45

@Frownette I was so engrossed in the match and couldn't be bothered to close the curtains so I've been sat in the dark, I might have just startled her by closing the curtains a bit more vigorously than normal because I didn't know she was there (should have turned the lights on first then I would have seen her) it was funny though.

Feel sorry for the team.

Well said!

Ratalie · 11/07/2021 23:46

@WetPaint4

Agree.

Southgate is an average manager who has benefitted from a very kind draw and home advantage. I know the goal came from a combination between the two wing backs, but shifting to 3 at the back seemed to surrender the midfield and England we're under pressure for much of the game.

I've already made my feelings clear re. his choice of penalty takers.

This was England's chance. They won't have home advantage again for a long time and are unlikely to ever have such an easy path to the final. He absolutely wasted it.

What a lovely person you sound 🙄

Ilovegreentomatoes · 11/07/2021 23:52

Honestly though Marcus rashford took a terrible penalty and imo that set the tone and lost the momentum for the rest of the team. I don't think he will live that one down easily.

colouringindoors · 11/07/2021 23:54

you're really blaming Rashford for the other two penalties? ffs

Chubbychubkins · 11/07/2021 23:57

I have to say, though, I'm dreading the abuse Rashford, Sancho and Saka will get. Poor Saka, I just wanted to give him a hug. He was crying.

I've already had a Facebook "friend" try and it down Rashford. I told her to fuck off, but a bit more articulately.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 11/07/2021 23:58

@colouringindoors your right probably being a bit harsh there.

Oh he'll be getting racist abuse for a long time.

I mean, it obviously wasn't a good penalty but he often does the stuttering run up and scores. Here it was wide by an inch or so. I've seen many, many much worse penalties.

Aaaaaand it begins. I suppose he should be banging hookers and doing drugs and beating his wife instead like that nice wholesome Paul Gascoigne.

I don't get why people on here feel the need to tear Rashford down and be so fucking spiteful when there are much nastier footballers out there.

Frownette · 12/07/2021 00:04

@1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor your cat is cute. And talented. A barometer for the current mood! Hope tail gone down now ;)

Ilovegreentomatoes · 12/07/2021 00:05

I definitely don't agree with any of the players getting abuse racist or otherwise.
England can make you the hero one minute or the enemy the next.

FootballisgoingtoRome · 12/07/2021 00:40

It’s disgusting the racial abuse players are facing tonight from their own fans. It just shows how deeply racism is ingrained into football. Taking the knee is no longer enough .

It isn't football, it is simply racists choosing high profile targets and abusing them with impunity.
Frownette · 12/07/2021 00:50

Well they'd be happy to claim someone of a different ethnicity as long as it's a win. It's playing the blame game. Or perhaps for some it's 'you toe the line and do what we want, and we'll accept you'. Utterly insane to blame playing skill on that. We like you if you do, and don't like you if you don't.

Please remember this is a small minority. Some of it will get trampled out tonight because it will be on record. Most people just like the excitement and realise one team had to win.
