To let my primary aged DC watch the football if England get to the final

If (a big if I know) England get to the final I think we should let them watch it (DC are 7 are 9). DC aren't really that interested in football to be fair, but everyone at school is talking about it so I wanted to give them a chance to be part of it. They are keen, but have never watched a football match before so not really sure how exciting they will find it.

DH thinks this is a terrible idea as it is a Sunday night and they will be shattered for school (true I suppose), the children don't really like football (and he thinks they will be bored) and it will put him off the match if they are about watching it and complaining that not much is happening!

Who is right? Smile and are you letting your DC stay up to watch it?

Yes of course.

They're all staying up tonight too.

I’m strict on bedtimes but this is special. My 2 (7 & 9) stayed up for the quarter final, will be up tonight & for the final if we make it. They’ll just have a couple of early nights afterwards to catch up.

I can't believe this issue takes up a lot of your thinking time ......

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2021 07:19

Yes definitely, we've had a miserable few years so what will one late night matter.

maddening · 07/07/2021 07:19

Let them watch tonight so they get on to the spirit and excitement

I don't bother with football but I enjoy the euros and world.cup.

Florrieboo · 07/07/2021 07:22

They are not toddlers let them stay up if they want to stay up. What time do they normally go to bed? I have a 9 year old here who is never asleep before 10pm, and could easily stay up until midnight any given day.

TheDevils · 07/07/2021 07:24

Of course. Ds 6 will be staying up to watch the game tonight too.
The odd late night does no harm.

fairydust11 · 07/07/2021 07:24

Yes definitely. It’s a one off and may never happen again for years! Although saying that my children will probably want to go to bed by half time - but they can stay up if they want - it’s nearly the summer holidays & as a teacher I’ll be watching it & so will the majority of the school. I’d say at least give them the opportunity to watch some of it, even if only half hour.

MarthaPent · 07/07/2021 07:29

9 year old dd will be watching the match tonight at 8 and definitely would on Sunday if they get through.
It's something to experience and remember 🎉

If they ask then let them… you can always put them to bed at half time. Give them a blanket to snuggle under on the sofa and if they drop off so be it.
If they’re really not bothered then put them to bed and enjoy the match in peace

Bumpsadaisie · 07/07/2021 07:32

I would follow their lead.

My son is 9 and definitely enthused and interested and following the games, he is in a football team himself. So he's definitely staying up - school or no school!

But if my child were not interested I don't think I'd keep them up.

Anyway it's the end of the year so a few days of tiredness not the end of the world.

Why don't you just see how it goes on the night?

We prob be knocked out tonight anyway and it will all be academic!

JazzerMcCreary · 07/07/2021 07:35

I’m sure their teachers will be anticipating some tired children anyway and they’ll all be talking about it at school.

Od130990 · 11/07/2021 00:37

Let the kids get involved, it's happening in their prime & something they'll remember forever. I can't believe the amount of schools sending out emails about the kids having to be in school on Monday morning & on time! As if one more day would make a massive difference to the year they've already missed... however at least missing Monday in school will be for a happier occasion/reason 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🦁🦁🦁⚽️🏆
