To let my primary aged DC watch the football if England get to the final

If (a big if I know) England get to the final I think we should let them watch it (DC are 7 are 9). DC aren't really that interested in football to be fair, but everyone at school is talking about it so I wanted to give them a chance to be part of it. They are keen, but have never watched a football match before so not really sure how exciting they will find it.

DH thinks this is a terrible idea as it is a Sunday night and they will be shattered for school (true I suppose), the children don't really like football (and he thinks they will be bored) and it will put him off the match if they are about watching it and complaining that not much is happening!

Who is right? Smile and are you letting your DC stay up to watch it?

What time will the game finish?

footballdisharmony · 06/07/2021 21:10

It starts at 8pm so I guess it depends how much extra time etc there is/penalty shoot outs?

It's the last week of term. Ours will. If they fall asleep on the sofa, they fall asleep 🤷

Ifitquacks · 06/07/2021 21:12

Ours finish for the holidays on Friday so no issue if they want to stay up.
Do they want to watch it? They might not be fussed.

Whoopsies · 06/07/2021 21:12

This is the one good thing about my DC having to isolate until next Tuesday!!!

shouldistop · 06/07/2021 21:12

What time are they usually in bed?

If they're not bothered about football then I probably wouldn't tbh. Or could they watch it in the morning before school while having breakfast / getting ready?

LawnFever · 06/07/2021 21:13

If they’re interested let them but they might just fall asleep anyway!

ForeverFloating · 06/07/2021 21:13

If they don’t like football it’s pointless, I’ve tried to get my two boys to watch the games, the youngest is always keen but within 10 minutes they are bored, bickering and chatting.
More enjoyable to put them to bed and properly enjoy it in peace.
In saying that if my two really want to stay up I’ll let them

DirtyBlonde · 06/07/2021 21:13

Hell yes.

It's a big match, and the odd late night for a special occasion isn't going to make any difference to the price of fish.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 06/07/2021 21:18

Mine are the same age but mad on football, they are definitely staying up. Maybe just see how it goes, if they’re really not interested they might go to bed at half time?
Bear in mind that this could be the first time in 55 years that we’ve won anything!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/07/2021 21:25

DS is 8 and I wouldn't keep him up if he wasn't that interested in watching it.

MadeOfStarStuff · 06/07/2021 21:27

Let them but don’t force them if they’re bored or tired

I’m sure plenty of others in their class will be and will also be tired on the Monday, just like lots of adults will be hungover

iolaus · 06/07/2021 21:28

As I've taken my primary aged kid to watch a 8 o'clock kick off live (and he wasn't the only one who went) I'd let them

HOWEVER they would know (especially if they don't usually watch) if they aren't watching it or are moaning about being bored they go at normal time to bed

We're not English whether or not the 10 year old watches all the final I haven't decided - he's been watching the first half of the 8 oclock matches,

Floralnomad · 06/07/2021 21:28

If they ask to stay up and watch id let them , if they don’t I wouldn’t suggest it - just make sure they know the result before school .

Foxhasbigsocks · 06/07/2021 21:29

Mine will - they really want to.

iolaus · 06/07/2021 21:30

BTW can they watch some of the semi tomorrow to give you an idea of how they will enjoy it

MouldyPotato · 06/07/2021 21:32

Only if they actually like football. Maybe show them a match before then. If everyone else is they might as well. I can't imagine much will get done on Monday.

XingMing · 06/07/2021 21:32

With zero personal interest in football, I'd let them watch. There is a huge amount of value in having participated even via TV in a big national event. In fact, I almost think I would make them watch. If they don't, it will forever be your fault.

MyGirlDaisy · 06/07/2021 21:32

Yes, if they want to I would let them watch it, one late night won’t hurt, especially as it’s near the end of term.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 06/07/2021 21:33

Ds 6 will be watching it. Possibly history in the making imo!!

Germolenequeen · 06/07/2021 21:33

Why would you not? 🤔

StopCryingYourHeartOut · 06/07/2021 21:33

Of course let them stay up!
I have memories of staying up with my brother to watch the games in Euro 96.
I was born in 88.

Bryonyshcmyony · 06/07/2021 21:33

I wouldn't give it a second thought. Your dh sounds like a fun sponge.

Bimblybomeyelash · 06/07/2021 21:34

My 8 year old stayed up for the last match, it was the first full match he’d ever seen! None of us are really into
Football
But He really enjoyed it. He’ll definitely be staying up for the final If we make it!

MuslinsRLife · 06/07/2021 21:34

Absolutely. My 3 & 5 year old will be watching it! Fingers crossed Smile
