To let my primary aged DC watch the football if England get to the final

If (a big if I know) England get to the final I think we should let them watch it (DC are 7 are 9). DC aren't really that interested in football to be fair, but everyone at school is talking about it so I wanted to give them a chance to be part of it. They are keen, but have never watched a football match before so not really sure how exciting they will find it.

DH thinks this is a terrible idea as it is a Sunday night and they will be shattered for school (true I suppose), the children don't really like football (and he thinks they will be bored) and it will put him off the match if they are about watching it and complaining that not much is happening!

Who is right? Smile and are you letting your DC stay up to watch it?

Get them ready for bed in pjs and see how they go, you can always put them to bed at half time if they are bored.
I guess they might ask lots of questions though, if your husband is likely to be snappy with them I wouldn't bother.

Bryonyshcmyony · 06/07/2021 21:35

Yes, in years to come when people discuss euro 2020 when England won, your kids will have to say their dad made them go to bed!

Twoforthree · 06/07/2021 21:35

Yes on the condition they watch it properly or they go to bed.

xprincessxjanetx · 06/07/2021 21:36

Absolutely

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/07/2021 21:38

I just asked my 10yo if she wanted to watch the semi-final tomorrow, on the condition that the second half (after her usual bedtime) would be strictly watching the game, no fiddling with her tablet or expecting us to chat lots. She said she'd give it a miss Grin.

Golden2021 · 06/07/2021 21:38

We've got tomorrow night first. Will probably take them to pub to watch first half. Bit of atmosphere for them, then bed. Only a week left of school.

imacuddler · 06/07/2021 21:38

If it happens then yes you should let them watch.
It's a national event and if they won the atmosphere will be amazing!
They shouldn't miss out!

My 9yo is not a mad football fan but is really enjoying this competition and has been allowed to watch all the England matches - he does have to actually watch and not mess about but he’s developed quite an interest so I’d definitely let him stay up. His bedtime is about 8.30 but he nearly always stays up reading until about 9.30 anyway so not too worried. Kids who go to sleep earlier might struggle. DD is 7 and not interested and would much rather sleep!

I’m expecting a class full of tired boys (my girls “hate football”) on that Monday, which is just as well as I will be tired too if England are in the final!

Justanotherlurker · 06/07/2021 21:40

You have just jinxed it now OP Grin let us get through tomorrow first!

But to answer your op, you have to let them watch it, it will no doubt be another 30 years of hurt until the next fiinal!

Iggly · 06/07/2021 21:40

Both of my primary age dcs are welcome to watch the semis tomorrow! They’re 9&11 though so can handle a later bedtime. And they almost certainly can watch the final!!

Maybe you should discuss the England women's team with them or start a girl's football club.

My 9yo DC will be staying up tomorrow night for the semi and Sunday if we get in the final

XingMing · 06/07/2021 21:44

Give them the choice, if they are 8 or 9 or older.

Paddingtonthebear · 06/07/2021 21:45

My 8yr old DD will stay up for tomorrow and hopefully Sunday if we get through.

TheSoapyFrog · 06/07/2021 21:46

My 6 (nearly 7) year old will be watching the semi finals and the final if we get there. I'm usually quite strict with bedtimes so he's really excited, especially as his brother will be in bed and I'll get a couple of treats in. He is actually into football and it's a big topic of conversation with his friends at school. A couple of late nights isn't the end of the world.

TinaYouFatLard · 06/07/2021 21:46

You’re overthinking.

If they get bored watching it then send them to bed.

Alliseaisyou · 06/07/2021 21:48

Sounds like your DH doesn't want them to disturb his enjoyment of the match and is using bedtime as an excuse.

Frazzled2207 · 06/07/2021 21:48

@XingMing

What would you say for a 6yo? I have an 8yo who is keen to stay up but I’m not that keen on the 6yo staying up tbh.
Natsku · 06/07/2021 21:51

I would. The match won't be on until 10pm my time and I know I'll let my 10 year old stay up to watch - this is the first time she's been interested in watching so I've let her stay up for all the England and Finland games. No school in the morning because its her summer holiday but I still would have otherwise for the bigger games at least, but she is a bad sleeper and quite often doesn't fall asleep until very late anyway so staying up late to watch football isn't much of a difference. Might think differently if I had a child that really needed a solid 10 or so hours.

DinosaurDiana · 06/07/2021 21:52

Have a football party and enjoy it.

LST · 06/07/2021 21:53

Mine are 7 and 9 and break up on Friday so they'll definitely be watching on Sunday (if we get into the final, they won't be interested otherwise)

Twokitstwokats · 06/07/2021 21:55

Mine aged 7, 5 and 3 watched the last match and will watch tomorrow's. No big deal.

Hottesttrikeintown · 06/07/2021 21:57

My 8 year old is coming to the pub tomorrow Grin it’s very family friendly

Wakemeuuuup · 06/07/2021 21:57

Definitely. England haven't been in a final in my lifetime so it may never happen again
