To walk barefoot in someone else’s home?

My parents think my DP is wrong (ie. rude) to pad around their house barefoot when we are visiting. He does this when he’s wearing sandals outside. As they don’t like this, he now puts socks on when he takes his shoes off at the door.
But what if he/I were dropping in on a friend for a cuppa while wearing sandals? Should we have a spare pair of socks/slippers with us? I don’t think so! AIBU to think it’s ok to be barefoot on someone else’s carpets?

Really? Are you allowed to touch anything or do you have to wear gloves before entering?

MurielSpriggs · 06/07/2021 23:47

Hilarious! Grin

@Odisia

'Lots of people don't pee in other peoples houses'. Really? I honestly sometimes feel that on Mumsnet I'm living in a parallel universe.

I'm a woman in my 50s. I use a toilet whenever there's one available 😂

Oh I completely agree with you (3DC, and I drink a lot of water so my pelvic floor needs me to pee regularly) but lots of people on here say they'd never pee in someone elses house and since reading that I've realised how few women I know use the loo in other people's houses.

How the hell is it rude to be barefoot in someone's house?!

Because it's overfamiliar and surely you know lots of people don't like feet. Just keep your shoes on.

kindaclassy · 06/07/2021 23:57

I think a little bit of my brain has a worry that they'll stand on something

If people insist on being barefeet, it's their problem frankly.

I have some old wooden floor in my house, I am not going to sand them or change them because some rude visitor decide to take their shoes off for no reason.

LassLa · 06/07/2021 23:59

But lots do! We step in all sorts out on the pavement or the park - DD stood in goose poo last week and would have trailed that in if we hadn’t taken her shoes off at the door.

It’s a minefield, honestly

NoProblem123 · 07/07/2021 00:05

Im torn Confused

1- Other people’s feet are rank.
2 - Expecting others to carry socks around in sandal weather is just weird.

Barefoot it is, but keep them crusty old clown feet out of my sight.

MrsClatterbuck · 07/07/2021 00:19

I once had someone visiting my house bring slippers with them as it had been snowing outside and they didn't want to walk snow covered shoes on my floors.

Taliskerskye · 07/07/2021 00:35

@Mistressofnone
You wear socks all year round? 52 weeks a year. In socks

Taliskerskye · 07/07/2021 00:37

@LassLa
It’s not a minefield. If you have shit or dirt on your shoes take them off. How is that hard,

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/07/2021 00:40

I saw a man walking his daughters home from school. he was barefoot.
perfectly well-dressed otherwise.
I still don't understand what I witnessed.

AddressLabel · 07/07/2021 00:48

@SpikeDearheart

I don't think I'd even notice if a guest was barefoot, let alone care. People are really fucking weird.
So this 🤣
Thursa · 07/07/2021 00:59

I honestly don’t care. If you want to keep your shoes on, keep them on. If you want to walk about in your sock, take your shoes off. If you have bare feet, that’s fine.

kylie122 · 07/07/2021 00:59

Wtf I don't find it rude I do it all the time

WeeM · 07/07/2021 01:48

I wouldn’t give this a second thought. Personally I would think it was more weird for someone in sandals in the middle of summer to rock up to my house carrying a pair of socks with them!

sykadelic · 07/07/2021 01:57

Their house, their rules. That said, it's a weird one bc his feet aren't dirty, the shoes are. So what about if he's wearing thongs? They should have slippers available if it's such a drama.

I had someone over yesterday and she curled up on the couch sans shoes/socks and I was actually pleased because it meant she was comfortable with the cleanliness of my home... apparently I'm the odd duck now

EmeraldShamrock · 07/07/2021 02:06

I'd hate barefoot people who don't live here walking around the house. I don't feel it is rude just vom.

HashtagAnonyMouse · 07/07/2021 02:23

Wow, some of the responses. Bring socks? 🤭

MirandaBlu · 07/07/2021 02:33

Your parents have said they don't like it, so don't do it at their house. Your H sounds like he already gets that and is honouring their wishes - all good there. But that has nothing to do with how a friend might feel. Just ask before you take your shoes off, if it's the first time - is it really that hard to keep them on for a few hours if that's your host's preference?

1forAll74 · 07/07/2021 02:52

Barefoot or socks neither would bother me.sandals are ok, as most people seem to have wooden or laminate floors these days.

PrettyLittleFlies · 07/07/2021 03:24

@ScottishNewbie

Grew up in NZ. Shoes inside are considered incredibly rude. Everyone is always barefoot inside lol
Exactly! Barefoot is so normal.

Probably a New Zealander Grin
PerveenMistry · 07/07/2021 04:00

Wouldn't want someone's sweaty feet in my home tbh. Take socks or slippers in car.

PerveenMistry · 07/07/2021 04:06

@Shodan

Yuk. No thanks to other people's bare feet on my floors, dropping dead skin and potentially athlete's foot/verruca germs everywhere. Not to mention having to look at other people's feet (hairy toes, overgrown nails) or smell them.

Take socks.

Exactly.

TaraR2020 · 07/07/2021 04:10

Op would they mind if you went barefoot?
I wonder (and sorry about this!) if it's because men's feet can just be a bit....less pretty and less cared for.

Regardless, they are BU but their house, their rules.
Keep slippers there or in the car.

Providora · 07/07/2021 04:17

For some reason I find the thought of sweat and fungus from someone else's bare feet a lot more squicky than whatever nasties may be on the soles of your shoes. I do understand that's not logical.
