To walk barefoot in someone else’s home?

My parents think my DP is wrong (ie. rude) to pad around their house barefoot when we are visiting. He does this when he’s wearing sandals outside. As they don’t like this, he now puts socks on when he takes his shoes off at the door.
But what if he/I were dropping in on a friend for a cuppa while wearing sandals? Should we have a spare pair of socks/slippers with us? I don’t think so! AIBU to think it’s ok to be barefoot on someone else’s carpets?

@SpikeDearheart

I don't think I'd even notice if a guest was barefoot, let alone care. People are really fucking weird.
This, with bells on
kindaclassy · 07/07/2021 13:26

No, I wont. Maybe seek treatment for your footphobia?

You can't beat this level of rudeness. Grin

Any normal human being will follow the host, their rules, religion, preferences (or not visit at all). Only on MN will someone put their foot down (no pun intended) and insist on doing something unpleasant for the host.

How do some people have friends I'll never know, but that might explain the thousands of threads about MIL from hell..

Being grossed out by feet is incredibly bizarre. Do you also ban visitors from wearing shorts so you don’t get their leg sweat on your sofa and don’t have to see their leg hair?

Strugglingtodomybest · 07/07/2021 13:33

If they don't want your bare feet on the floor, don't make you take your shoes off.

I agree with this. You cannot expect people to carry socks around with them!

Mostlylurkingiam · 07/07/2021 13:35

This is so weird, what is wrong with bare feet? In summer wearing flip flops or sandals you can't seriously expect people to bring socks with them. In a lot of countries it is incredibly rude and considered dirty to leave your shoes on.

My dog walks around bare foot in our house , should I buy her some socks?

HoldingTheDoor · 07/07/2021 13:39

Paws are cute. Human feet are hideous.

Only if you get these ones.

I would far rather have someone's bare feet on my floor that have most probably been washed once a day than shoes that could have been in multiple public toilets, bits of dog poo on pavements and polluted roads in their lifetime and probably rarely or never have the soles cleaned.

MagnificentBottom · 07/07/2021 13:45

I often visit people’s houses and am sure to remove my shoes as I thought this was polite. I often wear flip flops so therefore have bare feet. My feet are clean and don’t smell but now I’m worried people are judging me for my feet. Maybe I need to change my job.

Confusedandshaken · 07/07/2021 13:47

I was at a friends house on Sunday . It got cold in the evening so we went inside (only 6 of us, don't panic!) and I asked to borrow a pair of socks so I could take my shoes off. They were surprised I asked and said my bare feet were ok. It actually hadn't occurred to me that they wouldn't be, I was just concerned about them being smelly after being barefoot in trainers all day!

Mine are lovely.
HoldingTheDoor · 07/07/2021 13:48

Mine are lovely.

I doubt that. They're all hideous to me, no matter how well groomed.

PattyPan · 07/07/2021 13:53

How are feet more hideous than hands? Confused Or are you disgusted by the entire human body?

You can't stand feet, if the host asks you to be barefoot like everyone else, are you going to do it? Or are you going to insist on being unpleasant and wearing socks or shoes?

BTW, we have friends because we don't think bits of them are vile. HTH.

Shodan · 07/07/2021 13:57

Flip-flop and sandals wearers are deluded if they think their feet are clean and fresh.

They're not. Especially with those sandals/flip-flops that are made of plastic /fake leather.

I'm not saying I don't wear those things myself, I do. But I'd keep them on in someone else's house or, if I knew them to be a shoes-off kind of house I'd take slippers/socks with me. I don't make a habit of paddling through vomit/dog shit/whatever else has been cited though- I watch where I'm walking and tbh, the streets I visit aren't generally that scuzzy.

Do as your host/ess prefers. To do anything else displays a woeful lack of manners.

HoldingTheDoor · 07/07/2021 13:58

They're much uglier than hands. A lot of people are disgusted by feet. It's far from uncommon.

GiantToadstool · 07/07/2021 13:59

Absolutely . If youve had bare feet in trainers (yeuk. Trainer socks are the best) or in sandals/flip flops they arent nice!

They are virtually identical to hands! Being disgusted by a completely innocuous body part isn’t normal and anyone suffering from this should try to work through their issues.
HoldingTheDoor · 07/07/2021 14:03

I fear for your hands if they're virtually identical to your feet.

PoorPawsPickPawpaws · 07/07/2021 14:06

Personally, I couldn't give a shiny hoot if guests walk barefoot around the house. I like all our guests and assume their feet are no dirtier than the dog's paws.

claralara42 · 07/07/2021 14:07

I fear for your feet, you must have some hooves if you think they are all ugly and scary.

HoldingTheDoor · 07/07/2021 14:08

No. They're all gross, no matter how primped and preened they are.

bettyfloormop · 07/07/2021 14:10

Feet are horrid

Mine are beautiful. Tanned, pedicured and soft with turquoise toenails like little jewels.
