Dogs in Restaurants

IDontGetOutMuch · 04/07/2021 20:05

Took my mum out to lunch today. It was a nice enough place-£25 per head.
Have expectations changed with regard to dogs in restaurants? There were four other tables in our section and three had a dog with them.
Two of them barked at least three times during the meal. One jumped up at a waitress carrying puddings to another table, paws on her apron. One jumped up at the table wanting to be fed. One was petted by another waitress who then went straight to a table to take orders without washing hands. One was lying in the way so that I had to ask the owner to move it to allow my mother to get through with her Walker.
We had a dog when I was a child. He never went to a restaurant. What about people with allergies?
Is it okay that they do? Do I need to get over myself? I tried to compare to children. I expect my children to cause no disturbance to others at a restaurant and to stay at the table. We expected this even when they were little and actually rarely went to restaurants anyway.

nd that's fine. Using the example of the post office. If you were queuing and I came in, you would just need to tell me you are very uncomfortable around dogs and if you said it pleasantly, I would say not to worry and would just step out and wait. The problem I expect is that it wouldn't be said pleasantly but probably in an accusatory tone, face like thunder, giving dirty looks to my dog's and I, and that would not really prompt me to want to be kind

If you get that reaction its because you have made people very uncomfortable with your dog. It's not easy to say to someone that you want their dog to leave, many people would argue and be horrible about it, so you might start from a defensive position.

Dogs should be in your home, not all over the place. Post Offices, restaurants, shops, pubs.....these things are for humans, not for animals. Why are dogs so special anyway? CAn I bring a pet crocodile and an eagle to a restaurant? They're friendly, honest!

My god. It's up to the bloody owner of each establishment!!! How many times.
SillyLittleBiscuit · 06/07/2021 10:03

Feel free to check if you’re allowed exotic pets in places and take them along if you are. Just like I do with my dog.

rantymcrantface66 · 06/07/2021 10:05

At least the crocodile won't leave dander and trigger allergies 😁

vivainsomnia · 06/07/2021 10:08

You mean by just standing there, with my dog, where we are noth allowed. That's not me MAKING anyone very uncomfortable. If you happen to be very uncomfortable by their presence, it's your own making, not mine!

Again, if you just said 'excuse I'm sorry to ask, I appreciate you and your dog have as much right as me to be here, but I happen to be very uncomfortable around dogs, would you mind much to wait outside until I finish my transaction' with a nice smile and kind eyes, I'd say of course.

If you looked at me with a frown, told me that I made you very uncomfortable with my dog and demand that I stay out I'd tell you that if it's such an issue to you, maybe you could go and wait outside.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:12

FFS people shouldn't have to simper to people bringing their fucking dogs into the post office. Or blame themselves for fear or allergies and just spend the rest of the day in pain or discomfort. Not everyone has the confidence to speak up, and not everyone would be as nice and on living about taking their dog out as some (apparently but I doubt it given how insensitive to others feeling they have shown they are) on here claim they'd be.

Tie it up outside. Not everyone wants to be round your mutt

The problem is you are missing the point.

If dogs are allowed in said establishment, my dog and I are ENTITLED to be there as much as you are.

You however are not entitled to expect, let alone demand, that we are not. Our rights trump yours.

As LST says, be annoyed with the business owner but don't take it out on those doing nothing wrong. Unfortunately for the likes of you, these business owners likely prefer the customs of dog owners over those who hate dogs.

And risk it getting stolen when I am allowed to take him in with me? But it's dog owners who are entitled... Riiiight
rantymcrantface66 · 06/07/2021 10:17

Surely tying a dog up outside is worse for you - the dog is unattended and you have to walk by it. What if it lunges or slips it's lead or harness

Lockheart · 06/07/2021 10:17

If it's a) legal to keep such an animal as a pet in whatever country you're in, and b) the restaurant allows it, then of course you can. Why do you think you wouldn't be?

vivainsomnia · 06/07/2021 10:18

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop you too are misssing the point. If I'm entitled to have my dog with me in the business premises, I owe you nothing because you happen not to like dogs, and because you don't have the confidence to ask something nicely. It's your problem. Either wait to go in or don't go.

Tie it up outside. Not everyone wants to be round your mutt
Yes sure, and risk them being stollen. I don't think so. I don't expect people to enjoy being around my dog, expect people to respect my rights. You are more than welcome to stay away from my dog.

claralara42 · 06/07/2021 10:18

I am not missing your sense of entitlement, at all. It leaps off the screen,. I don't care if the restaurant says your dog can be there, I don't think they should be giving your that option.
In more civilised countries, dogs are not allowed in restaurants. That's how it should be.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:20

If dogs are allowed in said establishment, my dog and I are ENTITLED to be there as much as you are.

No one is legally entitled to be in any establishment

You however are not entitled to expect, let alone demand, that we are not. Our rights trump yours.

I think you'll probably find human rights trunk animal rights in pretty much every situation. And that the likes of the PO appreciate paying human customers.

Any thoughts on snakes being brought into the PO? They're family members after all

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:21

@LST then leave it at home while you go to the PO, or go with another person.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:21

@rantymcrantface66

I don't really care TBH
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:24

@vivainsomnia in the same breath I can say I don't like your dog, I'm entitled to be in the PO as a paying customer and you don't have the right to dismiss anyone's fear allergies of inconveniences. Therefore my rights trump yours.

Yes sure, and risk them being stollen

In your words when I mentioned people can't leave their kids home alone, I will say to you - and how is that my problem?

Lockheart · 06/07/2021 10:24

I don't care if the restaurant says your dog can be there, I don't think they should be giving your that option.
In more civilised countries, dogs are not allowed in restaurants. That's how it should be.

That's a statement of opinion, not fact. And what options the restaurant gives you is up to the restaurant, not you. Other establishments are available if you don't like their particular policy.

TheFoundations · 06/07/2021 10:24

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

The thing is, you're not in charge. So, things will happen in life that you don't like, and that you don't think are fair. It happens to everybody. That's why we have rules and regulations. So that people don't stand there going 'But it's not fair, you're not listening to my important needs'

The rules are, everybody can take their dogs into places that accept dogs.

You don't have to like it any more than a dog owner has to like it when they want to go somewhere that doesn't accept dogs.

You just have to stop whinging and get on with your life, and take responsibility for your own sensitivities. It's basic adulting.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:25

And @vivainsomnia no one is 'entitled' to be in any establishment. Legally you are welcome to patronise establishment provided you behave reasonably and respect others. Which I'm not sure judging by your posts that you're capable of doing when it comes to your dog

Lockheart · 06/07/2021 10:25

Any thoughts on snakes being brought into the PO? They're family members after all

I've actually seen someone out and about with a snake - and others with ferrets and parrots.

Again, if it's legal to own said animal and whatever establishment allows them to be brought in, then it's fine. I don't care if someone brings a snake to the post office.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 10:26

The thing is, you're not in charge. So, things will happen in life that you don't like, and that you don't think are fair. It happens to everybody. That's why we have rules and regulations. So that people don't stand there going 'But it's not fair, you're not listening to my important needs'

The exact same could be said of dog owners who bring their dog to places where other people feel uncomfortable

rantymcrantface66 · 06/07/2021 10:26

So you would care that an under control dog was waiting patiently beside its human but not if it was running around you worried because it had broken loose and couldn't find it's human or you had to walk by an unattended dog?

claralara42 · 06/07/2021 10:26

Thank you Captain Obvious Hmm

vivainsomnia · 06/07/2021 10:27

Haha, a sense of entitlement doing something I'm entitled to do vs your sense of entitlement to expect those with rights to be forbidden from applying them!

Yes, I'm the unreasonable one Grin

In more civilised countries, dogs are not allowed in restaurants. That's how it should be
Sounds like you need to move there. Leave us uncivilised people to enjoy our pets!

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 06/07/2021 10:28

I've taken a snake out in public. I even took him on a bus to the vets.
