Dogs in Restaurants

916 replies

IDontGetOutMuch · 04/07/2021 20:05

Took my mum out to lunch today. It was a nice enough place-£25 per head.
Have expectations changed with regard to dogs in restaurants? There were four other tables in our section and three had a dog with them.
Two of them barked at least three times during the meal. One jumped up at a waitress carrying puddings to another table, paws on her apron. One jumped up at the table wanting to be fed. One was petted by another waitress who then went straight to a table to take orders without washing hands. One was lying in the way so that I had to ask the owner to move it to allow my mother to get through with her Walker.
We had a dog when I was a child. He never went to a restaurant. What about people with allergies?
Is it okay that they do? Do I need to get over myself? I tried to compare to children. I expect my children to cause no disturbance to others at a restaurant and to stay at the table. We expected this even when they were little and actually rarely went to restaurants anyway.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

People with allergies need to look after themselves, rather than expect the world to behave as if everyone has their allergy with them

Believe me l try to. What do you suggest, as mine is so severe antihistamines don’t touch it. 10 mins in contact with a dog and l can’t breathe or see.

I’ll just rephrase your words and see how they read.

People who are disabled need to look after themselves, rather than expect the world to behave as if everyone has their disability with them

Substitute disability with homosexual, transgender, ethnic minority…. Fortunately we have the Disability Act to deal with people like you.

You can't walk away from being disabled, homosexual, transgender, from an ethnic minority. You can walk away from spending 10 minutes with a dog. You can walk away from a peanut.

How would the disability act deal with me saying that if you have an allergy, you need to be responsible with regard to avoiding your allergen? What about perfume triggering a migraine for me that can keep me off work and in bed for days? Do you think that nobody should be allowed to wear perfume to protect me from this? Or do you think I should move away from people who are wearing strong perfume? How would the disability act apply in this situation? For 'people like me'?

Said by someone who thinks their dog should be free to go everywhere. I guess my kids should just stay at home their entire lives so you can bring your hound to restaurants and everywhere else?

But I don't think my dog should be able to go everywhere. And I think that before I go into any establishment, I should check whether dogs are allowed, and if not, I should find somewhere else. And I think that you should check before you enter an establishment whether there are likely to be dogs during your visit, and if there are, you should find somewhere else.

Personal responsibility. Respect for others.

I always avoid anywhere that is advertised as fog friendly as I just cannot see how can possibly be hygienic, I cannot stand barking it gives me the absolute rage but most of all I'm horrendously allergic to dogs. Restaurants should also consider having a god area rather than having all the dogs in with everyone who doesn't necessarily want to share their eating space with one.
Prepared to be called miserable git but these are my thoughts, sorry everyone! Despite my allergy I grew up with dogs in the house and my parents still have one now, because the dog always came first! I have scars ON MY FACE from where one of their dogs bit me several times as well as my arms and legs and hands. These experiences have contributed to my anti dog feelings I'm afraid. And I know it's not the dogs faults it's bad training etc but still. No. No I do not want them in the place I go out to eat.

claralara42 · 05/07/2021 17:41

Dog friendly pubs are common so you should not assume. Your examples are nonsense

Fortunately where I live they are not common,a nd my examples are not nonsense. Your dog being in a restaurant is nonsense.

Heavymetaldetector · 05/07/2021 17:42

Dog not fog, obviously!

Mehhhhh · 05/07/2021 17:44

@Yetano

We regularly take our dog with us to eat. He sits under the table and is kept away from anyone he might bother. I always wash my hands before eating and it makes me feel bleugh every time a waiter/waitress goes out of their way to make a fuss of him before going off to serve someone else without washing their hands. It happens a lot.
And this is one of many reasons dogs should not be in restaurants. So gross.

Where do you live where dogs in pubs isn't common? Restaurants I understand, but dogs in public houses are pretty common all over

@PattyPan

There are thankfully much much fewer dog haters in real life than on MM.

I don’t think that’s the case, it’s just socially unacceptable to say you don’t like dogs irl.

Obviously you don't spend much time with a dog, from this comment and your general stance here. It's perfectly plain when you have a dog with you a lot of the time that people generally love them. People smile and approach, they make comments between themselves that you over hear. They ask if they can give the dog one of their biscuits or crisps. They want to know (dog owners will recognise, it's always the same 3 questions) name, age, and breed.

That's not people being uncomfortable to say they don't like the dog. And, honestly, it's all the time. Most people generally love dogs. The venom on here is nothing like real life. I've met a handful of people in 8 years who have looked uncomfortable around my dog, and always moved her away from them. It's that simple.

vivainsomnia · 05/07/2021 17:47

There was a recent Facebook thread on my local town recently and someone asked for dog friendly places. I was amazed at the number of places available, some I'd never imagine taking my dog to.

In the end, most dog owners want to enjoy their meal too, so those with unsettled are much more lily to leave them at home than owners well perfect well behaved dogs.

Sorry you have both physical scars and emotional ones from your parents putting dogs before you.

I agree with your post.

Dogs are unsanitary and do not belong in restaurants or grocery stores. I'm allergic. My kids are allergic. They have been knocked over by dogs, one snatched my daughter's ice cream out of her hands.
Dog culture has gone mad. Enough.

As for restaurants needing to make money and not exclude dog nutters, I actively avoid restaurants that allow mutts. I bet they lose as much custom as they gain. Why are rats in restaurants unwelcome, but slobbery flea-ridden dogs are permitted.

BlowDryRat · 05/07/2021 17:49

YANBU. It's rank and horrible for the significant number of people who are allergic to or scared of dogs. I expect dogs in a country pub but not a restaurant.

TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 17:49

@claralara42

Your dog being in a restaurant is nonsense

And yet it makes sense to most of the people in those restaurants most of the time. Otherwise the owners of the business wouldn't allow it.

TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 17:52

There are laws about dogs around food. They seem to disagree with you. Dogs are legally allowed in food shops and eating areas.

You know better than the law though, right?

Mehhhhh · 05/07/2021 17:52

Foundations, that's your bias. Look a little more openly, and there are loads of people who can't stand dogs. There's a subreddit on this topic that us huge, there are Facebook groups, YouTube channels.
I don't like dogs, and openly say so. The number of people who then feel able to state they also do not like dogs is huge, but usually they feel they'll be ostracised for saying so, so they keep quiet.

TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 17:53

Because dogs aren't vermin.

Mehhhhh · 05/07/2021 17:53

The law is an ass. They get things wrong all the time. Smoking was legal inside restaurants at one time too.

LST · 05/07/2021 17:54

@Mehhhhh you wouldn't even notice most dogs being there. Mine lies under the table and people only notice him when we get up to leave. And fyi.. he doesn't have fleas 😉

Mehhhhh · 05/07/2021 17:54

Dogs are vermin. But the multimillion £££ dog industry has convinced you they are an exception. Brainwashing at its finest.

I would. I'm allergic.

I'd much rather be next to a dog then a toddler with their faces full of snot, wiping it every 10 seconds, then touching everything around them or coughing without putti go their hands in front of their mouth. Even more so in covid times!

Very little doubt that the dog is less likely to pass anything on.

🤣🤣🤣 brilliant
TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 17:58

@Mehhhhh It's almost like you didn't read my post at all. I have never said that there aren't plenty of people who don't like dogs and I'm sure you're right about all those forums and platforms.

My reference was real life, mine and others I've known in different places over many years. Your reference was a subreddit. Don't be telling me to look more openly!

TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 18:00

'Vermin (colloquially varmint(s)[1] or varmit(s)) are pests or nuisance animals that spread diseases or destroy crops or livestock'

Dogs are not vermin. Vermin isn't 'an animal you don't like'.

TheFoundations · 05/07/2021 18:02

Also, I think humans have had dogs since before the £££ industry. Only a bit before though. Estimates are between 13000 and 30000 years ago.

Was that before Pets at Home opened?

rantymcrantface66 · 05/07/2021 18:04

Are any of the people who are obsessing over people with allergies even allergic to dogs or are they just being offended on their behalf to make a point?
