Garden supper this evening. Would it be reasonable to suggest that guests might leave the table for the football?

We have a ten people arriving for supper this evening. We plan to eat on the terrace, with a 7pm start to catch the last of any sunshine. Clearly if they arrive at 7.15, have drinks and warm spiced nuts/olives then sit down to a starter of crab, we’re not going to be serving the entree until well past 8pm.

I don’t know two of the couples. My guess would be that three, maybe four, of the men would want to see the match. I don’t think most of the women would be particularly interested.

My problem is I wasn’t aware there was a football match this evening and I rather suspect some guests will want to see it.

Do we;

  • open the doors so people can pop in and out?
  • suggest those that wish cut their food at table and then eat of their knees with a fork whilst watching the television?
  • suggest we watch together later?
  • not mention to football and hope nobody else does?
  • arrange regular update messages from someone who is watching?

If a match is at 8pm, what time will it finish? Should we defer eating until after the match but add in more substantial canapés?

@Scaredycat87
Read history
Totally fits in with OP

So OP might be the only person on here who is actually telling the truth about their life? Shock Maybe she's some kind of witch and we should burn her or something.

VerticalHorizon · 04/07/2021 17:44

I like the op, I think they sound like fun!

I am prepared over look the swinging and debauchery at her parties. I'm prepared to overlook the unseemly things they can do with a vol-au-vent.
I'd even overlook their rudimentary nut treatment.

But insisting on playing Barry Manilow on the patio? Enough is enough.

lolacola77 · 04/07/2021 17:48

Oh Hyacinth, you're candle lit supper will be ruined!

Oh goodness Now you’ve revealed a medical condition

Fgs zip your mouth op

That’s a little rude, is it not? Quite unnecessary. She’s happily married and highly unlikely to have anything contagious.

Are you able to change timings/menu? Could you invite them for 6.30, and make a less formal dinner? That way - you could go inside after main course at 8pm to watch the footie - and serve desserts while they are inside?

GYNisaliarWTF · 04/07/2021 17:58

Tell me you’re middle class without telling me you’re middle class.

The peasants may want to watch brute sport

What will one do about the canapés?

They simply must cut their food if they insist eating from their knees, barbarians

Scaredycat87 · 04/07/2021 17:59

Unbelievable
I’m now hoping you’re all right and this is fake!!

A peculiar comment.

Apart from anything else, a lot of posters on here aren't mums.

Are mum 'friends' an indulgence? I rather thought that would be more in the vein of some expensive chocolate or a spa weekend?

myrtleWilson · 04/07/2021 18:25

@LauraPearl The football and indeed the supper took place last night

jentinquarantino20 · 04/07/2021 18:26

My thoughts confirmed.

lollylimejuice · 04/07/2021 18:27

I like you OP, I like your repartee.
You are very much your own person. My DH would have refused the invitation I'm afraid. He loves football. I don't normally do what he expects so I would have asked you if I may come alone.
I'm glad it all panned out last night.

Drovememad · 04/07/2021 18:28

@jentinquarantino20 what do you do when friends have children? Ghost them!

VerticalHorizon · 04/07/2021 18:40

There are rumours that the next soirée will be without partners.
Affectionately it will be called The Lady Garden Supper.
