To expect my sons teacher to get his name right?

My son has had the same teacher for 2 consecutive years - and she still spells his name wrong. It's not just spelt incorrectly - it's a different name. He gets quite upset about it. I have pointed out the mistake multiple times but had his school report and it's typed wrong again on it.

It's not a hard name either.

He's only got another few weeks of her, should I just let it go or do I send her another email?

Considering what an awful time teachera gave had this year with doubled workloads, perhaps you might consider if you are happy with his progress and how hard that teacher has worked to get him there. 🙄

But she's been doing this to OPs son for two years now - what reason could there be for her first year of getting his name wrong?

Oh please!!

I'm sure she hasn't worked any harder than any other teacher (which, yes, has been bloody hard this year) but the rest of us have still managed to learn the names of our pupils.

So that justifies repeatedly getting her kid's name wrong even after being spoken to about it? Get a grip.

I would send the report back with 'you seem to have sent me the wrong report this is for X and my son is Y' I mean - if you cant get the name right in 2 years the report might not be right either!?

I would then be kicking up a stink the for 2 years she hasn't been bothered to learn his name. There is no excuse. Ive been to parties were the lady entertaining knows 30 kids names in the first 10 mins (I've actually been to many parties with her and she does it every time!) makes the kids feel included. What message does not learning your name in 2 years send out... Either I dont give a toss about you or I know it upsets you and I do it on purpose! Either way unexceptable.

Does she do it with everyone ie is sh#t with names or is just your son?

My youngests teacher can't say one of the girls names so has shortened it to the first 3 letters - it's not even an actual name she has shortened it just an ugly sound. Granted it is a foreign name which can put people off trying but not a difficult one, pronounced as it is spelt and all the kids nailed it in reception but this teacher just won't say it, the kids have even tried to help her but she insists on this abbreviation no one else calls her it so it's not like she is adopting what everyone else calls her. Just find it lazy and rude. I went through school being called my sisters name even though she left before I started! 7 years they still called me her name. Bumped into one of the teachers in the High St before lockdown, now I'm 40 so it's been a while, she spots me and calls out my sisters name! I mean my sister is awesome but ffs I have a name!! 😂

You need to knock it on the head before she passes it on to the next teacher!

Children’s names are inputted on the schools computer system on admission , it is possible that it was spelled incorrectly then by admin , all paperwork often including reports will be printed by admin and that name will be added so the teacher will think it’s correct . Contact school head perhaps as they will ensure it’s followed up

Toomuchtrouble4me · 05/07/2021 14:10

I’m a teacher - send the email

Bumzoo · 05/07/2021 14:18

Does she call him the wrong name too?

fairyannie · 05/07/2021 14:43

I'm a primary school teacher - send that email.

My maiden name was always pronounced incorrectly and spelled incorrectly by teachers. The other children would laugh at the different pronunciations and make me feel bad.

Now my surname is a female first name and I often get people calling me by my surname (which they assume is my first name). To which I reply OK Smith (insert their surname).

Mirw · 05/07/2021 18:40

It is something kids and adults have to get used to. Everyone "official" in my life wanted to call me the full version of "my" name because no parent would be stupid enough to call me the shortened version. Gues what, my name IS the shortened version and I don't ever answer to the other. Not in school or when a boss is screaming it down a corridor. Their shame, not mine!

gingerbiscuits · 05/07/2021 19:38

Send it!! That's just bloody lazy & downright offensive. I'm a teacher & that would never be allowed to continue in my school - we triple check everything with names on & even check any possible nicknames/shortened names with the parents.

Brennanlady1888 · 05/07/2021 21:51

Yes send the email. The fundamental issue is the teacher should get their pupils names right the report should be correct. It sets a poor example

Tessabelle74 · 06/07/2021 10:38

I'd not only send it, I'd escalate it to the head too. It's downright rude and unacceptable

londonscalling · 06/07/2021 10:53

@Hadalifeonce

I would probably be bloody-minded enough to send back the report and say they have given you someone else's report, as it doesn't have your son's name on it. But, I can be a stubborn bugger!

This

londonscalling · 06/07/2021 10:56

@ohmyohmy123

I thought about sending an end of term gift with the wrong name.

I.e. Mrs Summers instead of mrs Somerset for example but that's just petty haha

Do this and put "from the boy whose name you can't get right"!

1940s · 06/07/2021 11:04

I'd escalate to the head. I'm not making any assumptions about your child's name, race or ethnicity but this often occurs with ethnic names and it can be so hurtful.

Send back the report and say this isn't my child please report back on 'insert full proper name'

DartmoorDoughnut · 06/07/2021 11:16

Hope you get the correct report back soon OP!

OP has already commented that letters from the office are spelled correctly, so it seems it's the teacher getting it wrong.

Have you any updates OP?
