Diane Abbott did some dreadful interviews when she was ill. She has been an inspirational role model for many. I too get sick of the way she is targetted.

If anyone ever doubted the misogyny and racism directed at Abbott, it's clearly evidenced in the way this thread - completely unrelated to anything she has done - has somehow morphed into a discussion of whether she is stupid or not.

I feel sorry for their kids, one of the teens had a rather out there tiktok account last year which was shut down rather quickly. She seemed an unhappy, angry young person.

Boasting much? I don't like Diane Abbot very much, but getting into a grammar school and then to Cambridge puts you in a tiny minority of the population, academically - especially if (unlike our Prime Minister and others) you didn't come from a background where a large percentage of your family and your teachers did the same and set you up to succeed. A 2:2 at Cambridge is still going to be the equivalent of a 1st at many other unis around.

The only stupid thing about Abbott is her insistence on serving a country that has too many racist, sexist arseholes in it to deserve her.

It's a composite of a certain type of columnist. I think it was Peter Cook who said it was a send-up of 'the sort of columnist whose writing is like the crowing gossip of a particularly unpleasant woman, across the garden fence.'

Jean Rook once famously accepted the accolade of it being based on her and highlighted the misogyny.

Lots to unpack re the misogyny bit.

But ... Polly Toynbee? No. She's a political columnist and far more easily parodied as a patrician philanthropist in the late Edwardian style.

Philanthropist? Everything I have read of hers (not much, by choice) seemed very unpleasant & full of bile. Please do explain what makes her a philanthropist. I'd be fascinated to know!
