Polly Filla is Polly Toynbee.

Sarah Vine is represented - allegedly - by a character called Sarah Vile.

ReadySalt · 02/07/2021 19:39

If there was a Gove sex tape I would definitely watch (out of curiosity not for thrills!).

thepeopleversuswork · 02/07/2021 19:40

@Tlollj

Well I think it’s a shame. Never good news when a couple divorce especially if there are children involved.
It's really not true that its never good news when a couple divorce. Far better, if you're unhappily married, to take back your life. And far better for the children, ultimately, than sticking it out with gritted teeth.

I know you're probably trying to be compassionate and I know this isn't the point of the thread but this trope is so tired and toxic it gives me the rage. And these sorts of views keep so many of us trapped far longer than we should be.

thepeopleversuswork · 02/07/2021 19:41

Last days of Rome.

It really is...

thecatfromjapan · 02/07/2021 19:44

Polly Filla is not Polly Toynbee, you crazy, wild thing!

It's a composite of a certain type of columnist. I think it was Peter Cook who said it was a send-up of 'the sort of columnist whose writing is like the crowing gossip of a particularly unpleasant woman, across the garden fence.'

Jean Rook once famously accepted the accolade of it being based on her and highlighted the misogyny.

Lots to unpack re the misogyny bit.

But ... Polly Toynbee? No. She's a political columnist and far more easily parodied as a patrician philanthropist in the late Edwardian style.

daisyjgrey · 02/07/2021 19:47

He's been shagging his (male) aid.

It's almost like the tories lack morals...

No, Polly Filla’s style is nothing like Polly Toynbee. Polly Filla is Lucy Sweeney and all those identikit slummy mummy columnists that were everywhere about ten years ago, who have now all moved onto Instagram instead so the joke no longer makes sense.
TeddingtonTrashbag · 02/07/2021 19:49

Oh god, I’d forgotten Lucy Sweeney. Cringey!

Sobeyondthehills · 02/07/2021 19:51

The only reason that idiot is an MP is because he runs for Surrey, which would elect a donkey if it was blue, last election he didn't even bother campaigning in the area he went and campaigned in a neighbouring area.

Moonwatcher1234 · 02/07/2021 19:51

@Franklin12

Diane Abbott is a blithering idiot who can barely string two words together so anything she says needs to be firmly ignored. She is a massive hypocrite who thinks the rules are for the plebs.
What makes you say that with such vehemence? I actually feel that the vitriol directed against Abbott is disturbing end disproportionate...I think that is backed up by the statistics on which MP sadly receives the most abuse. Actually, for BME women, whether you agree with her or not, Diane Abbott has achieved something important and I feel uncomfortable with how people constantly single her out and denigrate her intelligence and morality.
Notonthestairs · 02/07/2021 19:51

@Pebbles16

Yes it is a Phillip Schofield; and Matt Hancock (whilst obviously guilty as hell) was chucked under the bus to try to stop the story (sources: BBC journo and a PPS)
I don't understand how this would stop the Gove story - is it the case that media agreed to hold fire provided they were given something else of equal scandal?
RoseAndRose · 02/07/2021 19:52

Its been that for years.

Ask Edwina Currie

PurpleWh1teGreen · 02/07/2021 19:54

Is it just me that's thinking how?

I mean, you wouldn't, would you?

Odisia · 02/07/2021 19:55

Some really nasty comments on this thread. I thought Sarah Vine's column last week really hit the mark. I recognised exactly how it was from my time working in the city. It seems quite poignant now.

Usually when a marriage breaks up there is one party that doesn't want it to. And they have children.

Notonthestairs · 02/07/2021 19:58

There many things I disagree with Diane Abbot on but

Back in 1971, Shadow Secretary of State for Health Diane Abbott was accepted to Cambridge and was one of only three female black students in the year, and the only one from a state school in the entire university.

So at one time she was a trailblazer.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 02/07/2021 19:58

I know someone who worked with Sarah Vine and it’s not an act, she really is vile. Goes out of her way to make life harder for other women particularly if they are younger or prettier.

lop124 · 02/07/2021 20:00

I also thought her article last week was thought provoking. And, as it transpires, closer to the mark than first thought.

TotorosCatBus · 02/07/2021 20:04

Murdoch allegedly wants Gove as the next PM.

The Hancock story is much juicier as there's video and he went to tv telling people to SD etc . His actions encouraged columnists and the Meme creators make it an even bigger deal. Gove was on the news promoting the government message but wasn't as heavily associated with Covid restrictions as Hancock. People will Hmm but won't judge him like
Hancock

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 02/07/2021 20:06

Let’s not fall for the derail of attacking Diane Abbott who has achieved more in life than most of her detractors including academically.

This is about Gove and Vine.

WorriedWishingWell · 02/07/2021 20:07

Not sure if already linked here, but a very telling and recent column from SV

I agree. I also think this thread is showing MN in all its disgusting glory. Imagine a thread where people were discussing how disgusting it is that anyone would want to shag some women in the public eye? Or maybe going on about their nicknames based on their massive tits?

I’m not a fan of anyone involved but why the need to be so nasty?

Mumsnut · 02/07/2021 20:09

The Honourable Mamba

thecatfromjapan · 02/07/2021 20:09

So, is there any way to stop the stories about Michael Gove leaking?

If Murdoch still backs him as PM, will there be the will to stop the stories?

Or is this going to force Murdoch to back someone else?

Does it signal Murdoch no longer backing Gove?

If Murdoch doesn't back Gove, who is he backing now?

justasking111 · 02/07/2021 20:09

I wonder if female MPs get sucked into their own sense of important and sleep around to this extent?

I find her very annoying on broadcast media. But having seen and heard her speaking live (quite by accident) I have to say I was impressed. There are way worse people than Diane Abbott in the HOC, on all sides.
