DS has worms, I'm horrified!!
I've already run off to the pharmacy to get ovex for us all plus another dose for in 2 weeks time but I'm worried my DD, will get it and she's only 18 months so will phone the doctors in the morning to get her something.

I need practical advice, how did you get rid it (and the shame ☹)???

I don't get this - I had never heard of worms before mumsent. Never had them as a kid, never knew anyone who had them, nieces and nephews haven't had them (my sisters are VERY open about this stuff grin). Are they more prominent in some areas or have they increased or something?

As another op mentioned, it’s estimated that lots of people have them and just don’t realise, especially adults! If you sleep deeply you might never be bothered by them or even realise - they tend to go through the breeding cycle about once a month, and stay in the bowel the rest of the time apparently - but you still have them, just doing their own thing in their own way Grin

Hope that makes you feel…good Grin

Why did the pharmacy not give anything for 18month old? My dd had worms around that age I bought a ovex medicine from pharmacy which treated us all never even told my ds 8 at the time what it was for just said he needed it so doesn't catch a bug his ds had.

sempiternal · 01/07/2021 10:50

Just one of those things! DD has had them a few times and we only know when she wakes up distressed and 'itchy' in the night. Chances are we all have it, but she's the only one who ever gets symptoms. We obviously treat the whole family anyway, so an extra bedding change etc. We make sure we always have ovex in the medicine box now.

I'm not sure why she didn't, I think she said I'd have to get something prescribed from the GP, been trying to phone them off and on all day but still no answer! Angry

I legit though this thread was going to be about the OP fending of swarms of earthworms that had somehow come into the house.

I'm so dissapointed.

PurpleyBlue · 01/07/2021 14:32

I'm scared I might have worms now and not noticed them. I've never had worm treatment. Can you actually see the worms or are they too small to see?

Hyacinth88 · 01/07/2021 14:36

My daughter has to have frequent colonoscopies. Apparantly it would be unusual not to see a worm or two when scoping children.
I was mortified when the consultant told me she let a junior Dr chase a worm round my child's intestine

You can see them, they are about 1cm long and white, they are called threadworm because they look like thread.

I have lots of snails in my garden if that makes you feel better, not many earthworms though!

I will never forget the first time I saw them. My daughter told me there were wiggly lines on the toilet paper & I thought she was hallucinating. But no. There they were. I have no idea how many! Yuck!

Now we put Vaseline on her bum if she's itchy & I can see them, clean sheets, towels etc every day. Clean pants at least twice a day & wash. And also make sure she sleeps in pants & cycling shorts which I remove to make sure eggs aren't shaken everywhere (if that's even a thing). It's disgusting but fixable! Hand sanitizer doesn't stop worms, we have discovered this recently so she properly washes hands with soap and water as I swear a classmate of hers has them as she has had them a couple of times now!
Good luck x

no shame in having worms.
most children have them at one point.

I prefer wkrms to headlice, much easier to treat

Wilkolampshade · 01/07/2021 17:01

Also OP, throw away any play-dough/plasticine type play materials. Very easy to transfer eggs under the nails this way. 🤢

xyzandabc · 01/07/2021 17:22

Just take the ovex and it will be fine. I wouldn't stop a weekend sleepover either. If he takes the ovex today, they will be gone by tomorrow evening, then just make sure ds has a good shower before he goes to the sleepover.

DS get them several times a year, never during the summer holidays, and didn't have them at all during lock down last year, 4 days back at school and bingo, they were back. I only ever give him the ovex, no-one else in the house, don't do any extra cleaning or sheet changing, none of the rest of us have ever got them (we are a family of 5).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/07/2021 17:26

Washing bottoms in the morning is the most important thing. They lay eggs round the anus at night.

I remember once on holiday feeling something on the top of my leg making itch. I scratched it and lo there was a worm on my finger. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮. Scarred for life

Never had that awful stuff in the house! Anything that was given to us went straight to the charity shop!

That's horrific!!

Well so far, so good. DS doesn't have any itchy bum but I stripped the bed yesterday, steamed cleaned it, washed all the bedding and towels and have done the same again this morning. I've washed his soft toys and will store those away for a bit. I've washed his bum first thing in the morning yesterday and today and carefully removed pants to ensure no eggs are spread about.

To be fair, as horrified as I was to see worms wriggling out of my son's bum, it's not been as bad as I imagined it would be!!

We've rearranged the sleepover for next week so that's OK.

Thanks for all the sound advice ladies

I was too scared to go to the toilet😭I’m terrified of worms

doodlejump1980 · 09/09/2021 21:23

Can I ask what everyone’s side effects of the ovex were? Got two 6 year olds and us needing done too I guess, and a weekend away planned. Ffs.

Daisy829 · 09/09/2021 21:25

We all had to use ovex when my youngest was 4 & got worms. No side effects for any of us.

Notashandyta · 09/09/2021 21:52

They come out at night?

Lay eggs on the anus?

Book. Three kids, former primary teacher and still totally ignorant of knowing they were this common. Gah.

Had nits several times tho.

Board at work in staffroom really shows up the dire state of schools germ wise- scabies in years one and five, slapped cheek year 3 etc.

Notashandyta · 09/09/2021 21:52

Boak, not book!

DeePlume · 09/09/2021 21:54

I always used to put a thick layer of Vaseline or sudocrem round their anus to try ans stop the worms laying eggs, as well as the ovex.

DeePlume · 09/09/2021 21:55

And never had any side effects!
