DS has worms, I'm horrified!!
I've already run off to the pharmacy to get ovex for us all plus another dose for in 2 weeks time but I'm worried my DD, will get it and she's only 18 months so will phone the doctors in the morning to get her something.

I need practical advice, how did you get rid it (and the shame ☹)???

Kids get worms, and kids get nits.
It happened a hundred years ago, and it’ll still happen in a hundred years time.
There shouldn’t be any shame, it’s just one of those things.

Wormsarehere · 30/06/2021 23:09

@Duckypoohs

I don't ever remember being wormed, or my kids having worms Confused. Are we just doomed and riddled or is it like that molluscum contagiusum that only ever seemed to exist on here. The middle class equivalent of morgellons disease.
The worm hanging out of my son's bottom was very really, certainly not a mumsnet myth.... unfortunately!

Do not google.
There are some really crazy people about who believe you can never get ride of worms.

No naked bottoms
Pants on in bed
Wash botttoms first thing and maybe after school if he's been itchy.
Cut finger nails and try to break any thumb sucking or nail biting habits.

Wash towels and flannels after every use for a few days.

Clean bed sheets a day or two after the ovex dose.

Wet dust the bathroom and bedrooms if you feel icky.

No need for shame every kids gets them at some point, same with lice.

Pantsomime · 30/06/2021 23:12

Short nails, wash towels daily, keep taps, switches clean & wash bedding for first 48 hrs while tablets get to work. Nappy cream on anus first 2 nights. Always have a pack in house and take it if staying away ( if we ever have trips again) to avoid that sinking feeling at bedtime -I can’t sleep, I’ve got an itchy bum

Radio4ordie · 30/06/2021 23:12

Top tip if you have a tumble drier, you don’t need to wash bedding etc all the time, just shove in the tumble drier and it kills off the eggs.

Wormsarehere · 30/06/2021 23:12

@itsamegladon I wish I'd seen your post before googling Shock

It's a rabbit hole!
People are really weird about it, definitely some mental illness with quite a lot of them, you can tell because the drs all tell them they don't have worms and they don't believe it.
They find every board and help site to post on so it looks like a real thing.

It isn't - don't panic.
The ovex works but can take a couple of days to kill them all. If the itch is keeping them awake you can wash the worms away again and try the Vaseline or sudocreme.

We have lots of mini flannels now that get washed after one use - I think they are cheaky wipes.

I opened this thinking it was about worms, like garden ones. In a similar way to damp houses having slugs !

@itsamegladon thanks, strangely enough DS said he doesn't itch, I only noticed the first worm when helping him clean his bum as he got a bit messy.
I've always worried about worms so always check the tissue when I wipe him and today, there was one and one in his pants.

He's more upset about not having his sleep over at his cousins house this weekend, bless him as it's been planned for a while.

Oh no slugs too 🤦‍♀️

I remember as a child when my db had worms I heard a commotion in his room - he was crying, dm shouting ‘what do you mean you can’t find it ! Pull the covers back it must be in the bed! Look on the floor ! ‘

I thought there was a runaway worm, he sounded terrified and I had something akin to the tremors things in my head so was scared. Turned out he had just dropped the worm treatment tablet when she handed it to him 🤣

Wormsarehere · 30/06/2021 23:44

@boatingL oh god, your poor dp and poor you hearing that 🙉🙉 !! But thanks for the giggle!!

The trick is to medicate twice two weeks apart. Tumble dry bedding and soft toys and wear pants under pjs. Nothing weird, very common and do treat the adults too, we can all catch them

Wormsarehere · 30/06/2021 23:44

DB, not DP..... sorry Blush

No tumble dryer here so good old fashioned washing.... yay!!

Kanaloa · 30/06/2021 23:49

There’s nothing to be ashamed of, it can happen to anyone - when they’re young they’re always touching things then putting hands in mouths. I was a bit like this when dd got nits though, I don’t know why but I just felt so stressed out and upset about it.

Clip his nails if they’re a bit long, and if you have a Milton spray it might be worth cleaning the toys.

Hotelhelp · 30/06/2021 23:51

@Duckypoohs my DS has them both at present Blush

CheddarGorge · 30/06/2021 23:56

I think you need to seriously chill out.

It's not shameful to have worms ffs. It's very common.

Personally I just gave the two doses of ovex and washed the sheets on the day of the first dose and they were dealt with. You're over dramatising

x2boys · 30/06/2021 23:57

My son got them at nursery yes it's horrible but we got over it quickly ,my son has severe autism so he was putting everything in his mouth at the time as I recall we just treated us all with ovex and washed all bedding etc ,I do remember it distressing him at night so be prepared for that

crystalize · 30/06/2021 23:58

As well as Ovex for people looking at ongoing deterrent there is an inexpensive powder/supplement called diatomaceous earth (food grade). Its like a chalky powder you put in water and luckily, tasteless.

We have never had it again since, its brilliant and has other health benefits too as it is silica based. Also used for pets as well to prevent worms.

CrappyBirthday2Me · 01/07/2021 00:20

You really are overreacting OP. It's a bit gross but no big deal. You've treated him already.

I'd let him go to the sleepover too. It's Wednesday and you've dosed him, so he won't have any more by the weekend. In a couple of weeks any eggs he's currently ingested will be worms so that's why you do the second dose.

MyDcAreMarvel · 01/07/2021 00:26

Under 2’s can have ovex it’s just not licensed and that’s all the GP will prescribe. Easier just to say your child is 2 to the pharmacist.

Sunshine4you · 01/07/2021 02:00

I have never in my life had worms nor have any of my kids.. how strange!!

PandemicAtTheDisco · 01/07/2021 02:10

Vac beds, Steam clean, iron pants and bedding.

Pants on in bed. Wash towels after each use.

Two half teaspoons of MSM powder daily with a drink. Eat lots of pineapple, grated carrot, pumpkin seeds every day.

Loocheeyar · 01/07/2021 02:16

Check for nits while you’re at it too !
